Abstract

It is currently accepted that language and culture are inseparable since culture becomes an essential aspect of learning a foreign language. In the Indonesian context, this broad understanding of the crucial role of culture in English teaching has raised challenges in different contexts for EFL teachers. The recent study focuses on Indonesian Junior High School teachers’ views on integrating culture in ELT and practices of textbook adaptation to help students build intercultural competence. Therefore, to meet these aims, a questionnaire and an open-ended question were employed to collect the data from fifteen participants teaching English at public and private schools in Indonesia. The study results reveal that Indonesian EFL teachers have positive attitudes on integrating intercultural competence in ELT. Still, some of the difficulties confronted by their implementation of textbook adaptation have been highlighted in promoting intercultural competence. This study suggests that EFL teachers in Indonesia should be provided with teacher training relating to textbooks adaptation and teaching culture. The implementation of ICT in ELT classrooms is also recommended. Finally, the redesign of the curriculum with more integrated intercultural competency materials should be taken into account. HIGHLIGHTS: The EFL teachers’ practices deal with textbook adaptation are not well implemented, although they believe that cultural competence in their teaching activities is crucial. The English curriculum should give more room for teachers in serving the students based on their needs, preferences, and skills, especially for enhancing students’ mastery on the target language.

Abstract

Presenting concepts to elementary school pupils is crucial. It is to improve their capacity to exchange ideas with one another. Fifteen elementary school pupils in a public school encountered difficulties in accomplishing this objective. They voluntarily enrolled in a treatment class to deal with these shortcomings. The teacher began by teaching basic bilingual grammar using the book's supplied vocabulary. After finishing the lesson, the instructor invited the class to complete comic strip activities. They completed the assignments in small groups. They used speaking practice and peer teaching based on the discussed content to make the activity meaningful. To get the teacher's opinion, the pupils then displayed their text and audio creations on the screen. A qualitative analysis of the information acquired throughout the teaching and learning process was then conducted. It has been determined that comic strip techniques and communicative grammar aid in the improvement of primary pupils' speaking abilities. Teachers can use it to teach related subjects, which is beneficial. Additionally, it prompts other researchers to conduct more in-depth observations on similar topics.

Abstract

Teenage pregnancy is a pregnancy that occurs when a teenager is 20 years old. Women who become pregnant at the age of 15-19 years have a greater risk of suffering complications from pregnancy and childbirth. Teenage pregnancy can have an impact on the future of the teenager herself, the child she is carrying, and her family. Apart from that, the impacts that arise due to early pregnancy are not only caused by habits, peers, and the teenager's environment but are also caused by the teenager's own knowledge. The research objective is to determine the correlated factors with teenage pregnancy in the working area of the Gadingrejo Public Health Center in Pringsewu. This research used a cross-sectional design with a sampling technique using purposive sampling. The number of samples used was 287 female teenage respondents. Test the analysis using the Chi-Square test. The results of the analysis show that all factors are significantly correlate to teenage pregnancy. Namely, there is a correlation between knowledge and teenage pregnancy (p=0.031), there is a correlation between the role of parents and teenage pregnancy (p=0.002), there is a correlation between attitudes and teenage pregnancy (p=0.041) and there is a not correlation between the role of peers and teenage pregnancy at the work area of Gadingrejo Public Health Center in Pringsewu (p=0.053). It is expected that health care workers can prioritize health promotion in schools (middle and high schools) to increase teenagers' knowledge about the impact of teenage pregnancy, or can choose cadres/persons responsible for teenagers reproductive health in each school.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of LPMKS fertiliser and phosphate solubilizing fungi on the growth of sweet corn plants and determine the dose of LPMKS solid organic fertiliser and phosphate solubilizing fungi. This study used a two-factor group randomised design, with the first factor being LPMKS fertiliser and the second factor being phosphate solubilizing fungi. The results showed that the treatment of LPMKS fertiliser did not significantly affect the growth and yield of sweet corn, but there was a tendency that the treatment of 100 g LPMKS produced better growth and yield of sweet corn. The treatment of phosphate solubilizing fungi at a dose of 5 g per plant tended to respond to plant growth and yield. There was an interaction between LPMKS fertiliser and phosphate-solubilizing fungi on the number of cobs parameter. The highest interaction was L3 P1 although not significantly different from L3 P1. The combination of all doses of LPMKS with low doses of phosphate-solubilizing fungi can produce the highest number of cobs.

Abstract

Land damage generally occurs due to erosion by the flow of rainwater on the soil surface. Erosion is closely related to the intensity of rainfall in an area and the slope of the land (slope). Soil erosion is an environmental problem which, if left unchecked in the long term, can reduce soil fertility. The Erosion Hazard Index (EHI) is used as a solution in controlling erosion at certain locations. The research was conducted in the Kali Gunting Sub-watershed in Wonosalam District, Jombang, East Java, in January 2021 to April 2023. The research locations covered several villages, namely: Galengdowo, Jarak, Wonomerto, Sambirejo, Wonosalam, Carangwulung, Panglungan, Wonokerto and Sumberrejo. Meanwhile, for soil sample analysis activities carried out at the Land Resources Laboratory I and II of the Faculty of Agriculture, East Java "Veteran" National Development University. Determination of the Erosion Hazard Index (EHI) is conductedusing the RUSLE method. The results showed that the villages of Carawangwulung, Jarak, Wonokerto, Sumberejo, Wonosalam, Wonomerto, Galengdowo, Sambirejo and Panglungan had EHI in the very low category. Efforts that can be made to maintain the rate of erosion are to maintain annual plants, add organic mulch from the remaining twigs and leaves, change traditional terraces to bench terraces and apply the Groundwater Conservation Area system. Furthermore, land with traditional terrace conservation in Sambirejo and Wonokerto sub-districts can be replaced by making bench terraces.
