Abstract

Abstract

Language development in elementary school-aged children is a gradual process closely linked to cognitive and social development. This study uses a literature review approach to examine various theories and research findings related to language development in elementary students. According to Jean Piaget's theory, children's language abilities improve along with cognitive maturation through specific developmental stages. During elementary school years, there is a significant increase in vocabulary acquisition and more complex grammatical structures, along with enhanced communication skills and active participation in discussions. Environmental factors, especially stimulation from social interactions with adults and peers, play a crucial role in accelerating language development. A deep understanding of the nature of children's language development is essential to support educational success and holistic personal growth. This study provides a theoretical foundation for developing language learning approaches tailored to individual children's needs. Keywords: language development, elementary school children, Piaget's theory, vocabulary, social interaction

Abstract

This study examines the integration of child language development theories (Chomsky’s nativism, Skinner’s behaviorism, and Piaget-Vygotsky’s constructivism) into the implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka (Independent Curriculum) in elementary schools using a library research approach with content analysis. The findings reveal that these three theories are complementary and highly relevant to the principles of Kurikulum Merdeka, which emphasize active, contextual, collaborative, and student-potential-based learning. The integrated application of these theories through strategies such as project-based learning, role-playing, storytelling, discussion, and scaffolding has been proven to significantly enhance children’s speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while supporting the development of literacy and critical thinking. Nevertheless, the main challenges lie in teachers’ readiness to understand and effectively implement the theories, the need for continuous training, and the provision of supportive learning environments and resources. This study recommends strengthening teacher competence through training based on language development theories and developing holistic and adaptive language teaching models so that Kurikulum Merdeka can be optimally utilized to sustainably support language development in elementary school-aged children.

Abstract

This study examines the integration of pragmatics and language politeness into Indonesian language instruction under the Kurikulum Merdeka at the elementary school level through a library research approach and content analysis of official curriculum documents. Findings reveal that the Kurikulum Merdeka explicitly positions pragmatic competence and politeness as core learning outcomes across Phases A–C, aligning closely with Grice’s Cooperative Principle, Leech’s Politeness Principle, and Brown & Levinson’s Face-Saving Theory. The most effective strategies include project-based learning, the Strengthening Pancasila Student Profile Project (P5), role-playing, simulations, and differentiated instruction, which significantly enhance students’ communicative competence while reducing verbal conflicts by 50–70 %. The primary challenges are teachers’ limited understanding of pragmatic theory and the scarcity of context-rich teaching materials. This study recommends intensive pragmatics-based teacher training, development of dialogue-rich polite-language media, and greater parental involvement to enable the Kurikulum Merdeka to successfully produce elementary students who are not only linguistically proficient but also polite, empathetic, and capable of dignified communication in the digital era.

Abstract

Abstract

Language is the result of complex cognitive processes processed by the brain, particularly in the left hemisphere through Broca's and Wernicke's areas, and other supporting areas. Coordination between brain regions determines language ability, while neurological disorders demonstrate the close relationship between language and brain function. This study employed a literature review method, reviewing various reliable scientific sources related to psycholinguistics and the relationship between language and brain function. Data were collected, critically analyzed, and systematically compiled to formulate concepts and theories that support the research focus. Language is a human cognitive ability that is highly dependent on brain function, particularly the cerebral cortex and the left hemisphere. Language processing involves Broca's and Wernicke's areas and the coordination of various brain regions. Language reflects thought, enabling communication, learning, and identity formation, with differences in brain function influencing variations in language ability. Language is a complex communication system regulated by the brain, particularly the left hemisphere's cerebral cortex through Broca's and Wernicke's areas, and the motor area. Although dominant in the left hemisphere, language processing requires cooperation between both hemispheres. Differences and disorders in brain development affect language ability and social cognition.

Abstract

This study aims to examine speech acts and language politeness from a pragmatic perspective through a library research approach. The focus of the study includes identifying types of speech acts, the politeness strategies employed by speakers, and the relationship between the two across various communication contexts. The research data were obtained from relevant books, journals, proceedings, and scholarly works. The analysis shows that speech acts—whether assertive, directive, expressive, commissive, or declarative—carry different levels of potential threat to the hearer’s face, thus requiring the use of specific politeness strategies. Positive and negative politeness strategies were found to play an essential role in maintaining social relationships, reducing illocutionary force threats, and aligning speech with cultural norms. This study also highlights a research gap in the comprehensive integration of speech act analysis and politeness strategies. The findings are expected to contribute theoretically to the development of pragmatics and serve as a reference for future empirical research. Keywords: Speech Acts, Language Politeness, Pragmatics

Abstract

This research examines the linguistic structures that shape how language functions, develops, and influences human communication. The primary issue raised is the limited understanding of how syntactic and semantic components interact systematically within a language, often resulting in fragmented linguistic interpretations. The aim of this research is to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date description of linguistic structures through an empirical and theory-based approach, integrating insights from structural linguistics and contemporary linguistic models. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method utilizing data from various sources. The data is analyzed using textual analysis techniques to identify structural patterns, element functions, and meaning relationships that emerge from the use of certain syntactic forms. This approach provides space for critical observation of linguistic phenomena, questioning theoretical assumptions, and interpreting the data more contextually. The results show that changes in syntactic structure have a direct influence on shifts in meaning, while semantic context also determines the syntactic form chosen by speakers. The interaction between the two is mutually regulating and inseparable, emphasizing that meaning does not originate solely from word choice, but is the result of the relationship between grammatical structure and interpretative context. This research concludes that syntax and semantics must be analyzed in an integrated manner to understand linguistic structures comprehensively.

Abstract

Language development in early childhood progresses through systematic stages, starting from the pre-linguistic phase to mastering complex language similar to adult speech. This process involves various bodily organs such as the brain, vocal cords, and ears that work together in language processing and production. Language acquisition is influenced by the interaction of competencies in understanding and producing utterances, which include observation, interpretation, and sentence generation. External factors such as parental roles, social environment, peers, and communication activities are key determinants of successful language development. Differences in language ability among children arise from a combination of biological maturity and social dynamics. This study employs a qualitative literature review method to synthesize theories and previous research findings related to children's language development. The comprehensive findings emphasize the importance of early stimulation and a conducive environment to support optimal language growth, which is crucial for educational success and social adaptation.

Abstract

Language acquisition is a natural, multidimensional process that occurs gradually, involving the interaction between internal and external factors. Internal factors include biological readiness, such as the child's innate device for recognizing language patterns (Language Acquisition Device), cognitive development, and hereditary factors, while external factors involve social environment, family interaction, and culture. This process begins when infants learn their first language or mother tongue through direct experience and linguistic stimulation from their surroundings. Language acquisition differs from language learning because acquisition occurs unconsciously and in informal contexts, while learning is a conscious and structured process usually conducted in formal education. The first language acquisition serves as an important foundation for subsequent language abilities, and the success of this process is highly influenced by optimal support from various internal and external factors. Therefore, a deep understanding of the nature and supporting factors of language acquisition is crucial for teachers, parents, and educational practitioners to create an effective and responsive learning environment that meets children's language development needs.
