Abstract

Silba adipata is a new pest that attacks white chili pepper in Bali, Indonesia. Most farmers control this pest with synthetic insecticides although this method poses significant risks to human health and the environment. Therefore, innovations and control technologies that are environmentally friendly and sustainable are urgently needed. Preliminary results show that S. adipata frequently attacks local figs (Ficus variegata) in Bali. Dried figs (Ficus carica) have been reported to effectively attract S. adipata adults. This study aims to (1) determine the phytochemical compounds in F. variegata fruit extracts that have the potential to act as attractants for S. adipata during the process of searching for and locating host plants; (2) evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of F. variegata fruit extract, nano fruit extract, and nanogel fruit extract as attractants for S. adipata on cayenne pepper plants. The methods used to achieve these objectives were (1) LC-MS/MS analysis for phytochemical profiling, and (2) a preference test to evaluate attractant efficacy. The results revealed that the phytochemical profile of F. variegata fruit extract includes 5-hydroxy-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-8,8-dimethylpirano[2,3-h]chromen-4-one, with the highest compound content (68.74%) in the fruit aged 9-16 weeks. The application of nanogel extract at a 50% concentration was highly effective and efficient as a biological attractant for S. adipata on white chilli plants in Bali. These findings strongly support the development of integrated pest management strategies in Indonesia.

Abstract

Mathematics education in middle school was important for developing students' logical and analytical thinking abilities. This article explored the factors influencing students' mathematical abilities, particularly cognitive load and intrinsic motivation. Cognitive load referred to how much information students could process, which could hinder understanding if too high. Intrinsic motivation increased students' enthusiasm for learning and encouraged deeper understanding. This research analyzed the relationship between BSS middle school students' mathematical abilities and their levels of cognitive load and intrinsic motivation through data collection. Data analysis was conducted using multiple regression tests to determine the relationship between students' cognitive load and intrinsic motivation levels and their mathematical abilities both in mathematics subjects and simultaneously. The multiple regression statistical test showed that intrinsic motivation did not significantly affect students' mathematical abilities (sig.0.102>0.05), while students' cognitive load significantly affected their mathematical abilities but was weak (sig.0.021<0.05). Simultaneously, the influence of cognitive load and intrinsic motivation significantly affected students' mathematical abilities (0.01<0.05). This research provided suggestions for further research on the impact of cognitive load on students' mathematical abilities.

Abstract

The Sundanese people of West Java, Indonesia, are well known for consuming raw plants, which are part of their food culture and are called lalapan. West Java consists of several traditional villages, one of which is Banceuy Traditional Village, located in Subang Regency. Usually, discourse about food is inseparable from culture since every place has unique dishes and cultures. This study aims to conduct a quantitative analysis of the inventory of food plant data using quantitative ethnobotanical indices. The research method used semi-structured interviews with 32 informants that consisted of two key informants and field-guided observation accompanied by one of the key informants around the village to identify and collect the food plant specimens. A quantitative data analysis was carried out using ethnobotany indices, namely, the Index of Cultural Significance (ICS), Use Values Index (UV), and Relative Frequency Citation (RFC). Banceuy indigenous people utilized 160 local food plant species belonging to 55 families. Fabaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Solanaceae, and Zingiberaceae were the dominant food plant families. These plant species were utilized as sources of carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables, spices, seeds, and beverages. The most applied food consumption manner by Banceuy indigenous people consisted of fresh food consumed, sauté, and boiling. Arenga pinnata had the highest ICS value (116) due to its utilization as seasoning and involvement in traditional rituals. Manihot esculenta and Carica papaya had the highest value in UV (1.81 & 1.69) and RFC (0.97) as they were used for daily consumption.

Abstract

This research aimed to study the efficacy of the fungus Purpureocillium lilacinum as a bionematicide to control root-knot nematodes (RKN). Two steps of experiments were carried out in this study. The first experiment involved the application of various levels of bionematicide doses to control RKN on tomato plants. The second experiment tested the application of bionematicide (both as a single application and in combination with bromelain compost) to control RKN on guava cv. Kristal. A carbofuran nematicide was applied following the company’s recommendation in this second experiment for comparison. The results of the first trial showed that the application of P. lilacinum bionematicide at doses ranging from 20–40 g per plant or 7–13 g per kg of soil was effective in reducing the J-2 RKN population in the soil and roots, as well as mitigating damage to plant roots. In the second experiment, it was shown that the application of P. lilacinum bionematicide, either alone or mixed with bromelain compost, was more effective than the application of carbofuran nematicide in reducing the J-2 RKN population in the soil and roots, as well as in minimizing root damage to guava seedlings. Additionally, the application of bionematicides mixed with compost proved more effective than their single application in reducing plant root damage. Furthermore, apart from being able to control nematode populations and plant damage, P. lilacinum bionematicide could stimulate plant growth.
