Abstract

This study was aimed to develop a fast, inexpensive, simple, and not involving hazardous reagent for the determination of rifampicin (RIF), isoniazid (INH), pyrazinamide (PZA) dan ethambutol hydrochloride (ETH) in 4FDC tablet based on infrared spectrophotometry in combination with chemometrics of partial least square (PLS) calibration. The analytical procedure involves three steps, namely calibration, validation and sample assay. The multivariate calibration model is evaluated by determining the precision and accuracy parameters, as suggested by IUPAC. The results showed that the optimized wavenumber range for the determination of RIF was the combined wavenumbers of 433 – 1552 cm-1 and 1756 – 3412 cm-1, the wavenumber of 433 – 873 cm-1 was selected for quantification of INH, 1714 – 2756 cm-1 for PZA, and 1552 – 2970 cm-1 for ETH. The predicted residual error sum of square (PRESS) values of RIF, INH, PZA and ETH contents were 0.00392%, 0.011724%, 0.007604%, and 0,003368%, respectively. The root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) values obtained for analysis of RIF, INH, PZA and ETH were 0.01979%, 0.03424%, 0.027575% and 0.018351%, respectively. The values of coefficient of determination (R2) for the relationship between actual values of these drugs and calculated values of these drugs using FTIR spectroscopy were 0.990, 0.977, 0.992 and 0.998 for RIF, INH, PZA and ETH, respectivelty. The developed method was succesfully applied for the determination of 4FDC tablet. The contents of RIF, INH, PZA and ETB in 4FDC tablets were in agreement with those specified in monograph of Indonesian Pharmacopeia. Keywords:  infrared spectrophotometry, rifampicin, isoniazid, pyrazinamide, ethambutol hydrochloride, partial least square.

Abstract

Pregnant women are highly vulnerable to malaria infection in its endemic areas, particularly infection by Plasmodium falciparum that can cause premature, low birth weight, severe anemia in pregnant women, and death. Sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP) for Intermittent Preventive Treatment for pregnant (IPTp) is used for malaria control in pregnancy recommended by the World Health Organization that has already been implemented in Africa. The P. falciparum resistance to SP has been reported in several malarial endemic areas, and mutations in the genes of Plasmodium falciparum Dihydrofolate Reductase (Pfdhfr) and Dihydropteroate Synthase (Pfdhps) are shown to be associated with parasite resistance to SP treatment. Genetic analysis of Pfdhfr and Pfdhps genes in pregnant women infected with P. falciparum has not yet been examined in Indonesia. The cross-sectional study was conducted at two subdistricts, Sungai Pinang and Peramasan, in Banjar district of South Kalimantan Province, where 127 pregnant women were recruited from 2008 to April 2010. Two important mutations in Pfdhfr gene (amino acid positions at N51 and S108) and three in Pfdhps gene (A437, K540 and A581) were analyzed by nested PCR-RFLP method. All of the seven pregnant women samples infected with P. falciparum presented PfDHFR 108N and PfDHPS 437G mutations. One of the samples had the additional mutation at PfDHPS 540, in which Lys is substituted by Glu. These results suggested that P. falciparum might present only some resistance to SP at Sungai Pinang and Peramasan subdistricts, Banjar District, South Kalimantan province, Indonesia. Although there were limited number of samples, this study showed only few mutations of Pfdhfr and Pfdhps genes in P. falciparum at Banjar district, South Kalimantan Province, that suggests SP might be effective for IPTp in this area. Thus, further analysis of the other mutation sites in Pfdhfr and Pfdhps genes and in vivo efficacy study of SP with more sufficient sample numbers will be necessary to confirm this preliminarily result. Keywords: PfDHFR and PfDHPS genes, Pregnant women, Falciparum malaria

Abstract

This study observed a 54-year-old patient with Sundanese-Indonesian bilingual aphasia at one brain hospital in Jakarta, Indonesia. He underwent a speech therapy with the treatment given to his second language (Indonesian) during the first 2 weeks of post-onset, and received treatment to his both languages simultaneously for one and a half months post-onset. This research was conducted by using two approaches, namely, a theoretical approach and a methodological approach. In terms of the theory, the approach used in this study is neurolinguistic. In terms of the methodology, the approach is analytic-descriptive with a cohort method. The patient had been diagnosed with having expressive-receptive aphasia in both languages. Three-time evaluations of his competence in his two languages (during the period of one and a half months post-onset) showed an interesting recovery pattern. In the first evaluation result (two weeks post-onset), it was found that the patient showed a nonparallel recovery; Indonesian (the second language) recovered earlier than Sundanese (the first language). However, in the second evaluation result (a month post-onset), it was found that the improvement in proficiency of the languages showed a parallel recovery; the proficiency improvement of Indonesian after having been given treatment in the therapy showed a recovery parallel to that of Sundanese, even though Sundanese had not been given any treatment at all for a month post-onset. The linguistic track record of this patient showed that Indonesian had a higher level of familiarity compared to Sundanese, and this is correlated with the recovery process of both the languages.

Abstract

This analysis focuses on the paradiplomatic policies in Indonesia and Korea. The two countries have similar characteristics, namely as unitary state systems, and enacted regional autonomy in the same era, 1998s. This qualitative research aims to examine paradiplomatic types in both countries and why the policies are rationalized. The findings revealed that although both countries are unitary states, paradiplomatic activism runs in different types. Provinces and cities in Indonesia face many restrictions and limitations by national regulations, while regional governments in Korea have more discretions and authorities to practice paradiplomacy around the world. The research finding also portrayed several provinces in Indonesia instrumentalizing paradiplomacy as instruments to provide international recognitions related to self-determination, and this similar fact is not met in Korea. This paper argues that the different types of paradiplomatic policies in both countries are influenced by domestic political conditions and typically influenced by the presence or absence of regional movements.

Abstract

The Malay Moslem community is actually a minority group in Singapore, which consist 14.3%, while Chinese ethnic is a majority with 76%. The previous studies on minority in Southeast Asia such as Thailand, Philippines and Myanmar showed that mostly the Muslim minority was treated as marginal community and political pressure. This study is to seek whether the Malay Muslim in Singapore has been treated as well as it in neighbor or contrary Malay Moslem has a different position and role in Singaporean politics. Furthermore, in term of foreign policy, this study is going to find the influence of Moslem existance, whereas Singapore is well-known as a secular state. In Singaporean leader’s perspectives, Islam is a threat, as it has been shown in several communal riots during the early history of Singapore, pressure from Malaysia and Indonesia. This is a vulnerable situation for Singapore. Therefore, Singapore addressed moderate policies toward Moslem through accommodation of Islam with several Islamic friendly policies in the country, and accommodation of Malaysian and Indonesian interests. In the other hand, Singapore also anticipates the threat from neighbors through close relations with United States and its allies.

Abstract

Increased infrastructure development has significantly impacted world agriculture, generally in Indonesia and particularly in Ngawi Regency. Due to the narrowing of agricultural land is an unavoidable necessity. It can be seen in the annual loss of agricultural land due to the eroded flow of development, which will doubt harm agricultural production. Because the agricultural land is decreasing, achieving food self-sufficiency in the world in the coming years will be difficult. The fact is the cause of the narrowness of agricultural land for infrastructure development. In addressing the issues mentioned above, research into the knowledge/literacy of farmers in the Ngawi Regency is required; specifically, developing farmer knowledge will enable farmers to continue farming. According to the research's findings: farmers have a deep understanding of agriculture; they mostly learn from their parents, the Internet, and neighbors; farmers learn about pest and disease cultivation and marketing aspects from the Internet.
