Abstract

Menarche is the first menstrual period that indicates that a woman has reached biological maturity. The age  of menarche continues to decline over time and is influenced by various factors such as nutrition, genetics, and socioeconomics. The intake of macronutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats plays a role in the maturation process of reproductive and hormonal organs that affect the age of menarche. Changes in nutrient consumption patterns among adolescents today can have an impact on  the earlier or delayed age shift of menarche which can be a sign of developmental or hormonal problems. This study used an associative analytical design with a cross sectional approach and purposive sampling techniques for 55 respondents. The instrument used was the SQ-FFQ questionnaire to measure macronutrient intake with the results of measuring total energy and menarche  age data obtained through interviews. The results of the study showed that 67.3% of respondents had no more energy intake, 32.7% had more energy intake, and  85.5% had normal menarche age, 14.5% abnormalized menarche age. The results of the analysis of Macronutrient energy intake with menarche age  with the Yates Correction or Continuity Correction test were obtained p = 0.125. These results show that there is no relationship between macronutrient energy intake and menarche age  in adolescent girls at SMPN 13 Padang.Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that there is no statistically significant relationship between macronutrient energy intake and menarche age. It is hoped that the age  of menarche is influenced by many factors apart from macronutrient intake, namely nutritional quality, hormones, and socio-economic factors.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels exceeding normal limits (hyperglycemia) due to impaired insulin secretion by the pancreas. One alternative treatment being developed is the use of medicinal plants with antidiabetic activity. Dragon's tail leaf (Epipremnum pinnatum (L.) Engl.) is known to contain secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, and phenolics that have the potential to lower blood glucose levels. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of dragon's tail leaf extract on blood glucose levels in rats with diabetes mellitus. This experimental study used a pre-test-post-test control group design. Thirty-six rats were divided into six groups: K(-) as normal controls, K(+) as diabetic controls induced by alloxan at 100 mg/kgBW, Kmet as a comparison group induced by metformin at 250 mg/kgBW, and treatment groups P1, P2, and P3, which were administered dragon's tail leaf extract at varying doses of 125, 250, and 375 mg/kgBW. Diabetes induction was performed using alloxan to induce hyperglycemia. Blood glucose levels were measured using the POCT method. The results showed that administration of dragon's tail leaf extract (Epipremnum pinnatum (L.) Engl.) reduced blood glucose levels in diabetic rats (p=0.001). Thus, dragon's tail leaf extract has potential as a natural antihyperglycemic agent in the management of diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Bitter melon (Momordica charantia) has been empirically proven for antimicrobial properties that can be used as an alternative medicine, while the changes that occur in Escherichia coli-infected mouse intestine after administering bitter melon have not been widely studied. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of Momordica charantia administration on histopathology of intestine of E. coli infected mice. This research was post-test control randomized group study involving 20 mice’s small intestine paraffin blocks which were divided into 4 groups consisted of control and different dosage of bitter melon juice, observed subsequently under a microscope to measure the of the small intestine lining and assess inflammation using modified Barthel Mandja scoring. This study found significant changes the height of mucosa and villi of mice small intestine after administration of 100 grams of bitter melon juice and the muscle layer and crypts after administration of 200 grams of bitter melon juice. The Barthel Manja score showed decrease of inflammation degree among P2 group, while increased inflammation degree found in P3 group. It can be concluded that administration of bitter melon juice has the potential to improve the intestinal histopathology of mice infected with Escherichia coli.

Abstract

Background: Kawa gambir leaves, dried in a furnace and brewed as tea, are rich in flavonoids, phenolics, steroids, and tannins and have antioxidant, antihyperglycemic, and antidyslipidemic properties. In diabetes, elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is a dyslipidemic abnormality that increases atherogenic risk. However, the effect of Kawa gambir on LDL in diabetic conditions remains unclear. Objective: To evaluate the effect of Kawa gambir leaf administration on LDL in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Methods: This experimental study used a post-test-only control group design in 36 Wistar rats randomized into six groups: K−, K+, MET, P1, P2, and P3. Diabetes was induced with alloxan in K+, MET, and P1–P3. MET received metformin, whereas P1, P2, and P3 received Kawa gambir infusions at 1, 2, and 4 g/100 mL once daily for 4 weeks. Serum LDL was estimated using the Friedewald formula. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA followed by Least Significant Difference post hoc testing. Results: Mean±SD LDL levels (mg/dL) were 37.16±3.03, 59.90±8.91, 41.30±6.74, 40.60±5.75, 38.95±10.15, and 40.33±7.01 in K−, K+, MET, P1, P2, and P3, respectively. Group differences were significant (p=0.001). The largest numerical reduction versus K+ was found in P2, with a difference of 20.95 mg/dL (95% CI 8.64–33.26). Conclusion: Kawa gambir infusion significantly reduced LDL compared with the untreated diabetic control. Although the 2 g/100 mL group showed the lowest LDL numerically, no significant differences were observed among active treatment groups. These findings support Kawa gambir as an antidyslipidemic agent in diabetic dyslipidemia.
