Abstract

The prevalence of diabetes mellitus is rising globally. Oxidative stress, which can result from hyperglycemia in diabetes, might have negative consequences. An antioxidant is needed to prevent hyperglycemia. Cathechin isolates are derived from gambir, which has many antioxidants. This study examines catechin isolates from gambir (Uncaria gambir Roxb.) effect on glucose homeostasis in rats induced by alloxan. For this experiment, 35 male rats were employed. Male rats were given alloxan (150 mg/BW, IP), and after 72 hours, blood glucose levels were assessed. If blood glucose levels exceeded 200 mg/dl, three oral catechin isolates were administered (T1=10 mg/kg/day, T2=20 mg/kg/day, and T3=40 mg/kg/day). Following blood collection on the experiment's last day, fasting blood glucose, glucagon and insulin levels were measured. Catechin isolates decreased blood glucose levels in all treatment groups compared to the positive control group (T1 = 150.750 ± 14.359 mg/dl; T2 = 159.750 ± 15.434 mg/dl, and T3 = 153.375 ± 20.207 mg/dl vs 385 ± 60.989 mg/dl) significantly (p value-0.05). A decrease in glucagon serum level was also observed in the treatment group vs positive control (T1: 193.855 ± 36.009 pg/ml, T2 = 286.689 ± 20.313 pg/ml, and T3 = 319.462 ± 30.060 pg/ml vs  529.825 ± 74.279 pg/ml), significantly. Catechine isolates in the T3 group showed an increase in insulin serum level compared to the positive control group significantly (T3 = 216.640 ± 38.230 µIU/ml vs 69.833 ± 3.071 µIU/ml). In conclusion, catechin isolates from gambir decreased blood glucose levels by reducing glucagon and increasing insulin serum levels.

Abstract

Elementary school students are consumers who are among those who consume the most food and beverages. Food and drinks sold around the school contain many hazardous substances such as dyes that have been banned from circulating (Rhodamine B in iced drinks, jelly drinks, and so on) and other additives such as formalin which is used as a chewy substance in meatballs sold in carts and restaurants that can cause acute poisonings such as allergies, coughs and chronic poisonings such as cancer of the liver, kidneys and other organs. The purpose of this activity is to increase knowledge about substances in food and an introduction to blood group examination. This activity was carried out at SD Negeri 13 Tungkal Selatan Village in North Pariaman District. The method of activity is in the form of counseling and demonstration. According to the survey before the blood group examination, it turned out that most of the elementary school students did not know their blood type. Before the blood group examination, the students were also given knowledge about determining a person's blood type. After this counseling was carried out, respondents became more aware of the impact of food/snacks on health, and respondents knew their respective blood types. Of the 64 students, there are 22 A, 17 B, 12 AB, 13 O. To avoid problems related to food and blood type. There is a need for continuous health education for elementary school students.

Abstract

The majority of people of Nagari Carocok Anau Kec. Tarusan Kab. Pesisir Selatan worked as a fisherman, farmer, a small number of civil servants and market traders, as well as a housewife. Pregnant women in Nagari Carocok Anau, most of whom are housewives, still do not receive health checks such as haemoglobin (Hb) checks. This activity aims to increase knowledge among the public and health cadres regarding anaemia and Hb examination in pregnant women, as well as treatment. The health of pregnant women is checked by checking blood pressure, Hb and medication. This Hb examination is an effort to minimize abnormalities that can occur in pregnant women and fetuses due to low Hb when the mother is pregnant. The examination results showed that more than half of the pregnant women (71.43%) who attended were in the age range 18 – 35 years. Nearly half (42.86%) of pregnant women had Hb levels below the normal limit (11 mg/dl). For a more valid diagnosis, it is necessary to carry out quantitative analysis from the hospital laboratory so that follow-up can be carried out. Education about anaemia and Hb examinations in pregnant women can increase people's knowledge so that preventive measures can be carried out early. Health checks on the general public (blood pressure, Hb) and treatment were also carried out, it was found that the Hb results were within normal limits.

Abstract

Background: Determining parental resilience in children with cancer is essential to ensuring parents’ involvement in caring for children in hospitals. Existing quantitative research evaluates factors influencing resilience in mothers but has not fully explored the determinants of resilience in parents of children with cancer. Studying parents more broadly is essential, as contemporary caregiving roles increasingly involve both mothers and fathers, offering a more comprehensive understanding of family dynamics.Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the determinants of parental resilience in children with cancer. Methods: Correlational research with a cross-sectional design was conducted in the pediatric ward of a tertiary hospital in Indonesia. A total of 102 parents of children with cancer were recruited using consecutive sampling. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, the 10-item Connor Davidson Resilience Scale (10-item CDRC), the Hert Hope Index (HHI), the International Personality Item Pool – Big Five Factor Markers 50 (IPIP-BFM-50), Parenting Stress Index (PSI), and the Survey of Family Environment (SFE). Quantitative data were analyzed using path analysis. Results: The results showed that the mean (SD) of the resilience score was 27.20 (5.79), personality 102.44 (19.11), hope 24.80 (6.04), parenting stress 39.22 (10.15), coping 39.84 (9.81), and family environment 84.57 (21.87). Resilience was directly influenced by hope (p=0.000), family environment (p=0.001), and coping (p=0.051). Personality indirectly influenced resilience (p=0.004). Path analysis revealed a Chi-square value of 0.000, a Root Mean Squared Estimate of Approximation (RMSEA) of 0.286, and values for the Normed Fit Index (NFI), Comparative Fit Index (CFI), Incremental Fit Index (IFI), and Goodness-of-Fit Index (GFI) were nearly close to 1, indicating the model had a nearly good fit. Conclusion: Parental resilience was determined by hope, family environment, and coping. Strengthening these factors can enhance resilience and support better outcomes for families and children with cancer.

Abstract

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are a health and socio-economic problem worldwide, both in low- and high-income countries, that affects all age groups. Computed Tomography (CT) is a diagnostic modality that can be used to assess brain damage. However, there are some limitations in the use of CT in TBIs. Therefore, biomarkers are expected to be a solution to identify brain injuries. Neuron-Specific Enolase (NSE) is a more practical and cheaper alternative. It does not require patient mobilization, especially for patients with severe TBIs, to accompany clinical examinations and CT. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used to determine the correlation between Neuron Specific Enolase (NSE) serum levels and the severity of TBIs at RSUP Dr. M. Djamil, Padang. Results: The study found that most patients were 23 men (76.7%), consisting of adults (40.0%). The majority of patients had mild traumatic brain injury (GCS 13-15) in 18 people (60.0%). The cut-off point for serum NSE was 6.6 ng/ml using the ROC curve. There was a negative correlation between serum NSE levels and the severity of TBI (r=-0.211). Conclusion: The correlation of serum NSE levels with the severity of TBI was very weak.
