Abstract

Public demand for cayenne pepper is high, so it is necessary to improve the quantitative characteristics of chilies, one of which is by selecting. This research aims to obtain information regarding the mean and interval values of several quantitative characters, inbreeding depression, heritability values, and selection progress from five generations resulting from crossing two cayenne pepper parents. The genetic material used consisted of two chili parents, namely the genotype IPB C321 (female parent), and IPB C290 (male parent) along with the results of crossing the two in the F2, F3, F4, and F5 generations with a total of 580 individual plants. The research results showed that based on the mean value between the F2 to F5 generations, there was an increase in the observed characters except at harvest age. The observed characters did not experience inbreeding depression. The heritability value in the narrow sense shows the high criteria for fruit length characters in the observed generation, fruit weight per plant and weight per fruit in the F2 generation, number of fruit per plant in the F2 and F3 generations, and fruit diameter in the F3 and F4 generations. Other generations have heritability values in the narrow sense of low and medium criteria. In general, the progress of selection for quantitative characters in the five chili generations studied showed a decline, although there were decreases and increases in the generations and characters observed.

Abstract

Our study aims to determine the agronomic performances of the red chili pepper genotypes developed by the IPB University as compared to the existing commercial varieties. The study was conducted from June 2019 to April 2020 in the Leuwikopo and Tajur experimental fields, IPB University, Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. Leuwikopo and Tajur location differs in the soil type and environments. The experiments at Leuwikopo were conducted twice, once during the dry season, and once during the rainy season. The experiments were set up in a completely randomized block design with a single factor, i.e. sixteen red chili pepper lines, replicated three times in three different environments. The 11 lines evaluated were F8120005-141-16-35-1-3, F8120005-141-16-35-1-4, F8120005-141-16-35-7-1, F8120005-241-2-9-4- 4, F7120005-120-7-1-7-8-1-2, F6074-7-4-2-1, F4074136-2-3, F474077-1, F474035-2-1, F474035-2, F4136074-1-4; these lines were compared to five commercial chili varieties, “Laris”, “Gada” F1, “Kastilo” F1, “Anies IPB”, “Seloka IPB”. Measurements were conducted on time to harvest, fruit length, fruit diameter, weight per fruit, number of fruits per plant, fruit weight per plant, and productivity. The results showed that the curly and large red chili pepper genotypes had similar agronomic performances to the control curly variety “Laris” and “Kastilo” F1, and and “Anies IPB”, “Seloka IPB”, or “Gada” F1 as control variety for the large chili. Our study demonstrated that all large and curly red chili pepper lines developed in IPB University have excellent potentials to be commercialized into superior varieties.

Abstract

Cowpea is a legume with the potential to serve as an alternative food source to replace soybeans in Indonesia; soybeans are primarily used in traditional foods such as tempeh and tofu. Currently, 70% of Indonesia's soybean demand is met through imports. Cowpea exhibits the ability to thrive in suboptimal soils with low fertility levels. One of the major challenges in Indonesian agriculture is the prevalence of acidic soils, which are typically deficient in essential nutrients. Notably, a lack of phosphorus (P) is a significant limiting factor affecting crop productivity in these acidic soils. To address this issue, a study was conducted to investigate how cowpea can adapt and grow in acidic soil conditions. The first experiment aimed to understand the impact of plant density and fertilization methods on the growth and yield of cowpea. The results indicated that planting one cowpea plant per hole resulted in a higher number of leaves and branches. Additionally, the treatment with complete NPK showed a higher number of pods, although this was not significantly different from the treatment with reduced phosphorus (minus P). These findings suggest that cowpea can thrive in acidic soil even under conditions of phosphorus deficiency. Cowpea has developed an external adaptation mechanism through the secretion of organic acids from its roots to survive in low-phosphorus acidic soils. As a follow-up to these findings, a second experiment was conducted to identify the types of organic acids secreted by cowpea roots under conditions of phosphorus deficiency, using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The results revealed that the organic acids produced by cowpea root exudates were primarily malic acid and oxalic acid. These research outcomes provide valuable information for growers, indicating that cowpea can be successfully cultivated in acidic soils. Cowpea's ability to produce organic acids allows it to thrive in such environments even when phosphorus levels are low.

Abstract

Anthracnose is one of the most destructive pepper diseases in Indonesia. Colletotrichum acutatum has been identified as a predominant species in pepper fields of Asian countries including Indonesia. The experiment used completely randomized block design with 2 factors and 4 replications. The first factor was 14 genotypes (c-1,2,3,4,5,7,8,9,15,18,19,28,47, and 49, and the second factor was 4 isolates of C. acutatum (PYK 04, BGR 027, MJK 01, and PSG 01). Each experimental unit used 10 green pepper fruits.  Inoculation methods followed the AVRDC procedure and resistance score followed the modified procedure of Yoon method. Symptoms were evaluated five days after inoculation. Disease incidence was evaluated using Yoon method with slight modifications. The experiments showed that C-15 genotype was more resistant to anthracnose than others; C-8 and C-49 genotypes were recorded as susceptible to anthracnose. Except the three genotypes, all other genotypes were recorded as highly susceptible to anthracnose. Capsaicin content and peroxsidase activities were not correlated with resistance to anthracnose.   Key words:  pepper, resistance, anthracnose, Colletotrichum acutatum

Abstract

The objective of this study was to  estimate the  heterosis and heterobeltiosis of thirty chili hybrids, the general combining ability (GCA), and the specific combining ability (SCA) of six chili (Capsicum annuum L.)   inbred lines. The experiment was conducted from October 2005 to March 2006 at IPB Experiment Field, Cikabayan, Darmaga. Randomized Complete Blocked Design was used with three replications.  All characters were significantly different for heterosis, heterobeltiosis, general and specific combining ability. Significant  differences were noted in reciprocal effect for fruit weight, and yield per plant. Hybrid IPB C-2 x IPC C-3 and IPB C-3 x IPB C-1 had positive heterosis and heterobeltiosis values for all variables observed. IPB C-2 showed the highest GCA for yield per plant and fruit length, IPB C-3 and IPB C-7 showed high GCA for yield per plant, fruit length, fruit width, and fruit weight. Crosses having high SCA for all variables observed were IPB C-1 x IPB C-3 and IPB C-2 x IPB C-3. Cross combination of IPB C-2 x IPB C-3 was the best hybrid.   Key words: chili, heterosis, heterobeltiosis, combining ability, full diallel

Abstract

Anthracnose is one of the most destructive disease of pepper in Indonesia. Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and C. acutatum have been reported to be predominant species in pepper fields of Asian countries including Indonesia. Inheritance of resistance to anthracnose caused by C. acutatum was studied in Capsicum annuum populations derived from a cross between resistant line 'C-15' and  susceptible line 'C-2'. Twenty green pepper fruits from each plant were inoculated with PYK 04 isolate.  This experiment showed that there was no maternal effect based on t-test of F1 and F1R.  Segregation of resistance and susceptibility in the F2 fitted a normal distrubution, indicated that resistance was controlled by polygenic genes. Eight effective factors were responsible for anthracnose resistance. The degree of dominance was partially recessive. Gene effects for resistance to anthracnose were additive and dominance. Additive variance was larger than dominance variance. Broad-sense heritability values were high but narrow-sense heritability values were medium. Selection for resistance to C. acutatum on pepper breeding programme should be conducted on later generation.   Key words :  Inheritance, anthracnose, resistance, pepper, Colletotrichum acutatum

Abstract

The aim of the experiment was to study the performance of yield components of  eight pepper hybrids and their adaptation at four locations in two years (2008 and 2009). The experimental design used was Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), three replications as a block was nested in the location. Plant materials were eight hybrids (IPB CH1, IPB CH2, IPB CH3, IPB CH25, and four commercial hybrids were Adipati, Biola, Gada, and Hot Beauty). The IPB CH3 hybrid produced higher fruit width, fruit length, fruit weight, fruit flesh density and yield per plant compared to commercial hybrids. Days to flowering and days to harvesting of IPB CH3 was earlier than that of Hot Beauty. The performance of yield characters in Boyolali, Rembang and Subang was better than that in Bogor. The IPB CH3 hybrid was specifically adapted to Subang and Rembang, while IPB CH1, IPB CH2, IPB CH25 were suitable for Boyolali.   Keywords: fruit, yield components, genotype x location interaction, Capsicum annuum L.

Abstract

The ability of seed to maintain seed quality during storage is called seed vigor. Accurate method for seed vigor testing of pepper seeds is necessary to accurately determine seed storability during seed distribution. The aim of this research was to determine the best accelerated aging method (AAM) of pepper seed. Freshly harvested seeds of Capsicum annuumL., IPB C9 genotype were used in this study. The experiment used randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The experimental treatments were seed vigor testing methods i.e. natural deterioration test at room temperature in controlled humidity (RH 90-95%), and four AAM (hot water 60 ºC, methanol 20%, ethanol 20%, and high temperature at 40 ºC). The best method was selected using analysis of variance, coeficient of variance, regresion dan t student analysis. AAM using 20% methanol at periods of 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 hours was the best method of seed vigor testing for pepper seed. Keywords: accelerated aging, deterioration, ethanol, methanol, high temperature
