Abstract

The objective of this research was to analyze the combining ability of nine tropical maize lines from PT. BISI International, Tbk’s collections across two locations. The research used a complete diallel mating design according to Griffing’s method 1. Randomized completely block design was used as an experimental design with three replications in each location, Kediri and Nganjuk, East Java. Result of the combining ability analysis revealed that location effect was significant for all traits. Additive gene effects were more important in controlling plant height, ear length, ear diameter and 1,000-grain weight while non-additive gene effects were more important in controlling days to harvest, ear weight per plot and yield potency. Good combiners across locations for days to harvest were Sr-1#247 and Sr-1#086. Sr-1#001 and Loe#187; Pron#077 and Loe#057; Pron#142 and Loe#187; Loe#187 and Loe#057; Sr-1#001 and Loe#187 were a good combiners for ear length, ear diameter, 1,000-grain weight, ear weight per plot and yield potency, respectively. Best specific combinations for several important traits were generated from parent lines with high x low GCA. Sr-1#001xLoe#055; Loe#187xLoe#055 and Loe#057xLoe#055 were the best for ear weight per plot and yield potency. Keywords: combining ability, diallel, G x E interaction, tropical maize

Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objectives of this study were to evaluate several chili pepper hybrids whith high yielding character and stable at six environments based on some non-parametric stability analyses, and to study the correlation among the stability of non-parametric methods. The hybrid of chili pepper (7 candidates varieties and 5 commercial hybrid cultivars) were grown in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications in 6 different environments. Ten nonparametric stability methods were used to identify the stable genotypes.  According to the SI(3), RS, NPi(1), NPi(2), NPi(3) and NPi(4) stability parameters, Imperial was the most stable hybrid. According to the SI(1), SI(2) and TOP  stability parameters and yield, IPB CH3 was the most stable hybrid.  In this study, the high TOP values were associated with the yield. Nonetheless, the results of the other non parametric (SI(6), NPi(3) and NPi(4)) were negatively correlated to the yield. The results also revealed that based on the non parametric stability test, the results could be classified into 2 groups, according to the agronomic and biological stabilities. Keywords: chili pepper, environment, non-parametric stability, yield

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe diallel cross analysis method was developed to obtain genetic information involved in a population formed closely to Hardy-Wienberg equilibrium. The objective of this research was to study the genetic parameters on yield component of crossing on big and curly species of red pepper using Hayman approach for dialel cross-analysis method. This approach used 6 parental genotypes and 30 full-diallel cross combinations F1 hybrids. Appearance of the character was controlled by one up to two groups of positive additive genes. Each character observed has a partial dominance. Dominant genes were found much more in the parental characters of weight per plant (IPBC120), flesh thickness of fruit (IPBC2), fruit diameter (IPBC159), and fruit length (IPBC2). The broad sense heritability values on each character was high. Whereas, narrow sense heritability value for some characters were also high, except for character of weight per plant which were moderate. Keywords: additive effects, dominant effects, gene, heritability

Abstract

ABSTRACTLow light intensity is a limiting factor in the intercropping system. The aim of this study was to evaluate the production and fruit quality of 20 tomato genotypes under shading condition. This study was conducted at Cikabayan experimental station-University Farm of IPB from January to April 2013. The research was arranged in a nested design with three replicates. The main plot was shading intensity consisted of four levels, i.e., 0, 25, 50, and 75%, while the sub plot was 20 genotypes of tomato. Results of this study showed that the number and weight of fruit per plant under 25% shade were increased for most of the tested genotypes, while under 50% shade showed a high diversity among genotypes. Based on relative production under 50% shade, genotypes can be grouped into four, i.e: sensitive, tolerant, moderate, and shade-ecotype-like genotypes. 50% shade significantly affected total soluble solids and total titrated acid, but did not significantly the firmness of fruit of shade-ecotype-like genotypes. Keywords: intercropping, production, shade, quality

Abstract

ABSTRACTFruit cracking is one of the major constraints in tomato production in lowland areas. This reduces fruit quality and quantity both as freshmarket and processed fruits. The objective of this study was to determine the resistance of 25 tomato genotypes to fruit cracking, correlation to others characters and their genetic similarity. The experiment was conducted from April until August 2012 at Leuwikopo Field Station, Bogor Agricultural University. A randomized complete block design was used with three replications. Fruit crack index was used to evaluate tomato fruit crack resistance. Correlation and impacts of variables were analyzed by path analysis. The genetic similarity was analyzed by clustering analysis. Result of resistance evaluation showed that fruit crack index of 25 tomato genotypes ranged from 0.00 to 20.58. Fruit crack index was directly related to percentage of  fruit crack weight per plant, percentage of number of fruit crack per plant and total soluble solids. Cluster analysis showed that the genotypes could be clustered into four groups. Keywords: clustering analysis, genetic diversity, path analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACT Hybridization is one of plant breeding techniques to obtain high yielding varieties. Combining ability and heritability information are needed for evaluating hybrids’ performance. The objective of this research was to estimate the combining ability and heritability of tomato yield component traits in a full dialel crosses at lowland. The experiment was conducted  at Leuwikopo Experimental Station IPB, Darmaga, Bogor from March until August 2013. The random model of Griffing method I was used to estimate general combining ability, specific combining ability and heritability. The experiment used a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. IPBT1, IPBT13 and IPBT84 had a good general combining ability (GCA) for weight per fruit, fruit size and weight of fruit per plant. IPBT30 and IPBT33 had a good general combining ability (GCA) for number of fruits per plant. IPBT13 × IPBT1 hybrid showed a high and positive specific combining ability (SCA) values for all characters, therefore it can be used for hybrid variety. The highest broad and narrow sense heritability was obtained for fruit size, meanwhile the lowest was obtained for weight of fruit per plant. Weight per fruit, fruit size and weight of fruit per plant characters were influenced by additive and dominant gene effects, whereas number of fruit  per plant was influenced by additive gene effects.      Keywords: additive, dominant, GCA, SCA, heritability

Abstract

Genotype x environment interaction (GxE) information is needed by plant breeders to assist the identification of superior genotype. Stability analysis can be done if there is a GxE interaction, to show the stability of a genotype when planted in different environments. This study aimed to estimate the effects of genotype x environment interaction on yield and yield components of fruit weight per plant as well as to look at the stability of 14 tomato genotypes at four lowland locations. The study was conducted at four locations, namely Purwakarta, Lombok, Tajur and Leuwikopo. Experiments at each location was arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Stability analysis was performed using the AMMI model. Fruit weight, fruit diameter, number of fruits per plant and total fruit weight per plant characters showed highly significant genotype x environment interactions. Variability due to the effect of GxE interaction based on a AMMI2 contributed by 88.50%. IPBT3, IPBT33, IPBT34, IPBT60 and Intan were stable genotypes under AMMI model. Keywords: AMMI, multilocation trials

Abstract

ABSTRACTHigh genetic variability is one of important determinants in successful breeding of clonally propagated crops such as cassava. Induced mutation, including mutagenesis using gamma irradiation, is one strategy to increase genetic variability. The objective of this research was to obtain information of lethal doses (LD20-LD50) from five cassava genotypes (Jame-jame, Ratim, UJ-5, Malang-4, and Adira-4), to analyze the variability, and to obtain potentially high yielding cassava mutant candidates. Cuttings of several cassava genotypes were irradiated by 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 Gy gamma rays. The results showed that genotype Malang-4 had the lowest LD20 (7.53 Gy) and LD50 (18.47 Gy), while genotype Jame-jame had the highest LD20 (24.94 Gy) and LD50 (33.24 Gy). The highest phenotype variability was obtained in the cassava population irradiated by 15-30 Gy gamma rays. The highest phenotype variability was also determined by the source of tissue, i.e., cuttings from the middle stem resulted in the highest phenotype variability. This research found 32 high yielding potential candidate mutants. Keywords: gamma rays, LD20, LD50,mutant, mutation

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe chili consists of several species, five of which have been cultivated, namely C. annuum, C. chinense, C. frutescens, C. baccatum, and C. pubescens. The classifications of these species are based on: 1) morphological characters, especially floral morphology, 2) crossability between species, and 3) fertile hybrids between species. Species C. baccatum and C. pubescens can be easily identified and distinguished from one another, because there are obvious differences in the two species. However the species C. annuum, C. chinense, and C. frutescens has many common characteristics, so it is difficult to distinguish morphologically. The purpose of this study was to identify capsicum species based on crossability and morphological characters. The crossability experiment was done in housing area TDP 2 Ciampea Bogor from January to December 2013 and the morphological characteristics at Leuwikopo experimental station, IPB. The morphological characters experiment was arranged in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Data were collected on successful crosses, seed viability of successful crosses and morphological characters based on descriptor for capsicum IPGRI. The percentage of successful crosses involving IPBC10 and IPBC145 (C. annuum) as female parents and 20 genotypes as male parents ranged between 0-90%; and using IPBC295 (C. frutescens) as female parent was 40%. Genotypes which had successful results equals 40% were alleged as C. frutescens species (IPBC61, IPBC139, IPBC63, IPBC163, IPBC289, IPBC288, IPBC294 and IPBC285). Principal component and of clusters analysis suggests that there are two species groups, i.e. C. annuum and C. frutescens. Keywords: capsicum, cluster analysis, crossing, genotypes, principal component analysis
