Abstract

Background:  Stunting, a form of chronic malnutrition manifesting in early childhood, typically becomes apparent by the age of two.  It inhibits physical growth, disrupts brain development, and increases the risk of disease in children, thus affecting the quality of future human resources. Babakan Penghulu sub-district, with 53 cases of Stunting in 2023, has been designated a priority area for stunting control program by the Cinambo Health Center.  As a densely populated and flood-prone area in Bandung, Babakan Penghulu suffers from inadequate environmental sanitation, which adversely impacts toddler health and development. Objective: This study aims to identify environmental factors related to the incidence of stunting in the Babakan Penghulu sub-district. This study employs an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. Method: This research is a quantitative research. The population comprised 458 mothers with toddlers. A sample of 79 mothers was selected using proportional random sampling across 8 neighborhood units. Data were collected through observation sheets, and data analysis was conducted using the Chi-Square Test. Results: The results showed a relationship between drinking water quality (P-value:0.018), waste disposal facilities (P-value:0.044), and access to healthy toilet facilities (P-value:0.001). In contrast, household wastewater disposal facilities (P-value:0.089) not show a significant relationship. Conclusion: Stunting in toddlers is significantly associated with environmental sanitation factors such as the quality of drinking water, waste disposal facilities, and toilet hygiene. However, household wastewater disposal wasn’t significantly related. Strengthening community-based total sanitation infrastructure and promoting community health initiatives, with support and supervision from the local health office and the Bandung City government, are recommended.

Abstract

Introduction: Early life skills education has the potential to be an effective intervention in preventing adolescent dating violence (ADV). However, measurement tools for life skills in general in the context of ADV prevention are still limited. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the General Life Skills Scale (GLSS) using the Rasch model. Methods: This study is classified as research and development. A total of 366 junior high school students (111 students from private schools and 255 students from public schools) in Indonesia participated in the empirical validation of the General Life Skills Scale (GLSS). The GLSS consists of 48 items spread across the constructs of personal skills (22 items) and social skills (26 items). GLSS used a four-point Likert scale, from 1 (strongly disagree) to 4 (strongly agree). The psychometric properties of the GLSS were evaluated using Rasch modeling. The psychometric properties were reviewed based on reliability, item fit, unidimensionality, and item distribution at each level of difficulty. Results: The results of the analysis showed that the GLSS had excellent reliability (? = 0.96; person reliability = 0.93; item reliability = 0.95). The separation index showed the scale's ability to distinguish respondents in five ability strata and items in six difficulty levels. Of the 48 items, 26 items met the Rasch model fit criteria, and unidimensionality analysis confirmed that the scale measured one main construct. However, the Wright map showed logit gaps between items, especially at the very easy difficulty level. Conclusion: The GLSS is considered valid and reliable for measuring adolescents' life skills in the context of preventing dating violence; however, improvements in item distribution are recommended to enhance measurement accuracy. Theoretically, this study contributes to the development of a general life skills scale in adolescent development theory. Practically, this study provides a validated scale for educators to design life skills curricula and can be integrated into school-based ADV prevention programs.

Abstract

Background: The urgency of reproductive health education for adolescents has been intensified by challenges such as early puberty and exposure to digital media in an era characterized by unrestricted access to information and shifting societal norms. The role of parents as primary educators is critical to ensuring a healthy transition from adolescence to adulthood. However, significant barriers are encountered by parents, particularly those with limited education and digital literacy, in fulfilling this role. Objective: The objective of this study is to analyze parental perspectives regarding reproductive health needs as a foundation for developing a model to enhance their capacity in educating early adolescents. Methods: This study used a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design in rural Indonesia. A survey of 106 parents of early adolescents (aged 10–12) was followed by in-depth interviews with 9 purposively selected participants. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively using SPSS, while qualitative data underwent thematic analysis using ATLAS.ti to explore communication patterns and parental needs related to adolescent reproductive health. Results: Thematic analysis revealed seven key themes: (1) basic understanding of adolescent reproductive health, (2) education on values and norms, (3) parental concerns regarding external challenges, (4) dynamics of parent-child communication, (5) communication barriers, (6) the role of parents as shaped by gender, and (7) needs for specific materials, methods, and media. A strong emphasis was placed by parents on the need for information regarding puberty, strategies for effective communication, and approaches to engaging with adolescents. School-based counseling and face-to-face sessions were identified as effective delivery methods, with preferences expressed for media such as books and WhatsApp groups. Conclusion: Efforts to provide reproductive health education by parents have been shaped by limited knowledge, perceptions of taboo, and external influences. Programs designed to address these challenges must be tailored to meet the specific needs of parents. The activation of parent associations in schools has been identified as a promising approach to disseminate information and strengthen reproductive health education. Keywords: parents' perspectives; reproductive health education; early adolescents

Abstract

Stunting remains a persistent public health concern in urban Semarang, Central Java; however, mothers’ coping processes are still weakly operationalized in prior research. While the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) offers a useful lens for understanding how people make health-related decisions, it is better understood as a social–cognitive decision-making framework than a full coping model, and the real-world links between seeking health information, responding to it, and taking action to prevent stunting have rarely been put to the test. This study set out to explore how maternal health information seeking, viewed here as a form of cognitive coping, relates to stunting prevention practices, drawing on the TRA to understand how gathering information might lead mothers to take deliberate preventive steps. A cross-sectional survey was administered to 337 mothers from Central Java, Indonesia. Structured questionnaires were used to assess health information-seeking behavior, social media utilization, family health communication, and stunting prevention practices. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. Most mothers reported moderate to high information-seeking (51.6% moderate; 46.9% high) and high prevention practices (66.2%). Information seeking was strongly associated with stunting prevention practices (χ² = 98.612, df = 4, p < .001). Social media use was also significantly related to information seeking (χ² = 116.428, df = 4, p < .001). In addition, 73.9% received information related to stunting during pregnancy, and 90.2% reported intensive family health communication. These findings suggest that health information seeking functions as an effective cognitive coping mechanism that shapes maternal stunting prevention behaviors. Digital health interventions leveraging social media and strengthening family communication may enhance maternal coping and improve prevention outcomes in the future.
