Abstract

The ability to comprehend English functionally remains a challenge for many university students in Indonesia. Although students often acquire theoretical knowledge such as grammar and vocabulary, they frequently struggle with understanding real-life conversational contexts. This study aims to examine how the conversation approach helps build students’ comprehension in English language learning. Using a qualitative method with a case study approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation from final-year students at a university. The findings reveal that active engagement in conversation activities significantly improves students’ contextual understanding, self-confidence, and critical thinking skills. These results are supported by key learning theories such as Communicative Language Teaching (Savignon), Affective Filter Hypothesis (Krashen), Socio-Cultural Theory (Vygotsky), and Experiential Learning Theory (Kolb). Moreover, conversation fosters a more humanistic, participatory, and contextually relevant learning environment. Therefore, integrating conversation methods into English instruction in higher education is highly recommended as a strategy to enhance deep and applicable language comprehension.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the use of gerund and reported speech in academic and nonformal texts, as well as to identify common errors in their usage. Using a literature review approach, data were analyzed from various sources such as academic journals, grammar books, and related research articles. The findings indicate that gerunds are widely used as subjects, objects, or complements in both formal and informal contexts, while reported speech plays a key role in conveying indirect information in a formal and structured manner. However, several common errors were found, including incorrect tense shifts, pronoun usage, and sentence structure transformations. These findings imply the need for contextual and practice-oriented grammar instruction to help learners understand and apply these grammatical forms accurately across diverse communication settings.

Abstract

Phonology is an important aspect of learning English as a foreign language, especially for beginners. Understanding the English sound system not only helps improve pronunciation, but also strengthens listening and speaking skills. However, many students experience difficulties due to the phonological differences between their native language and English. This article aims to present effective strategies in teaching phonology based on recent findings. The method used is a literature study by analyzing various relevant literature sources. The results show that strategic approaches such as the use of AI-based technology, minimal pair practice, articulation visualization, as well as providing continuous feedback can significantly improve students' phonological awareness. Other strategies such as reading rhyming poems, singing rhyming songs, and sound manipulation exercises also play an important role in helping students recognize and produce sounds better. With targeted and needs-based phonology teaching, communication skills in English can be effectively improved.

Abstract

This study examines the use of tag questions in fairy tale dialogues, specifically in the story Why Doesn’t the Rabbit Have a Long Tail?, motivated by the limited research on this linguistic phenomenon in contemporary children’s literature. The objectives are to identify the forms of tag questions, analyze their communicative functions in character interactions, and explore their impact on meaning conveyance, character development, and narrative dynamics. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with a library research approach, data were collected from the fairy tale text and supported by relevant academic sources, then analyzed pragmatically and syntactically to gain a comprehensive understanding of tag question usage. Based on the analysis of the fairy tale, it was found that the explicit use of formal tag questions is very limited, appearing only around four to five times. However, reflective questions functioning similarly are more prevalent and play a crucial role in expressing the protagonist’s inner conflict, fostering emotional engagement with readers, and reinforcing the moral message of the story. Therefore, tag questions and reflective interrogatives serve as effective linguistic strategies that enrich dialogue, enliven characters, and make the narrative more interactive and meaningful. This provides important contributions to linguistic studies in literature and benefits writers and educators in children’s literature.

Abstract

English pronunciation remains a significant challenge for Indonesian EFL learners, particularly in substitution errors where students replace target phonemes with more familiar sounds from their native language. This study investigated substitution error patterns among primary school students aged 10-12 years at a tutoring center in Medan, Indonesia, focusing on errors occurring during reading aloud activities to identify specific phoneme substitutions and understand L1 interference effects on English pronunciation accuracy. A qualitative case study approach was employed with six participants who were recorded reading level-appropriate English texts, with data analyzed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis framework and ELSA software for transcription support. The findings revealed three primary error categories: diphthong simplification where students consistently replaced complex English diphthongs (/əʊ/, /eɪ/) with monophthongs, vowel length and quality substitutions reflecting difficulties with English vowel distinctions absent in Indonesian phonology, and consonant voicing errors particularly affecting voiced fricatives and affricates. Notable examples included /nəʊt/ → /nɒt/ for "note," /ˈɡəʊ.ɪŋ/ → /ɡɒn/ for "going," and /ɡɪv/ → /ɡɪf/ for "give," demonstrating systematic L1 phonological interference rather than random pronunciation mistakes. The study concludes that Indonesian EFL learners require explicit, contrastive analysis-based pronunciation instruction targeting specific phonological difficulties, as without targeted intervention, these error patterns are likely to fossilize in learners' interlanguage systems. Future research should examine pronunciation development across different proficiency levels and evaluate the effectiveness of specific teaching techniques addressing identified error patterns.

Abstract

This article examines the strategic role of nominal and verbal sentences in writing English paragraphs. Nominal sentences serve to introduce the topic, convey the identity, circumstances, or nature of the subject in a concise and clear manner. Meanwhile, verbal sentences are used to describe the actions, activities, or processes carried out by the subject, making the paragraphs more dynamic and informative. The balanced use of these two types of sentences can increase variety, cohesion, and coherence of paragraphs, as well as make it easier for readers to understand the content of the writing. In addition, the combination of nominal and verbal sentences also helps the writer build a logical paragraph structure, clarify the message, and prevent misunderstandings. Thus, mastery and application of nominal and verbal sentences are very important for writers, especially in the context of academic writing and scientific communication.

Abstract

The global demand for English language proficiency continues to grow significantly, particularly in the contexts of international communication, education, and the workforce. However, in Indonesia, many students still face difficulties in mastering English pronunciation due to limited interaction with native speakers and insufficient access to interactive learning tools. Speech Recognition Technology (SRT) has emerged as an innovative solution, offering real-time feedback and facilitating more adaptive, autonomous learning. One SRT tool gaining attention is the Cambridge Learning Dictionary (CLD). This study aims to analyze students' perceptions of using CLD in English language learning at Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, the study involved ten female students aged 21–22 from the English Education Study Program. Data were collected through classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and open-ended questionnaires. The findings indicate that most participants perceived the use of CLD positively, particularly in enhancing pronunciation accuracy, boosting speaking confidence, and fostering learner autonomy. Furthermore, three main themes emerged: (1) improved language competence through native-speaker pronunciation models in both British and American accents; (2) increased independent learning through self-directed use of CLD; and (3) technical challenges, including connectivity issues, the absence of real-time feedback, and the limited inclusion of Islamic vocabulary. Overall, CLD is considered to hold strong potential in supporting English learning in Islamic higher education settings, especially in terms of pronunciation and communicative skill development. To maximize its effectiveness, infrastructural support, formal training, and contextual content integration tailored to the cultural identity of Islamic educational institutions are recommended.

Abstract

This study systematically investigates common mistakes in Indonesia-English translation, identifying specific linguistic and cultural pitfalls that compromise target text quality. Utilizing a qualitative, corpus-based approach, the research analyzes a diverse range of translated materials, including academic papers, journalistic articles, and official documents, to pinpoint recurring error patterns. The analysis focuses on four key areas: grammatical inaccuracies (subject-verb agreement, tense usage, article omission), lexical misinterpretations (semantic incongruity, false cognates, collocations), syntactic interference from the source language, and cultural misunderstandings leading to inappropriate pragmatic choices or mistranslation of idiomatic expressions. Findings reveal that while some errors stem from a direct, word-for-word translation approach, others are indicative of a deeper lack of target language competence and cross-cultural awareness. The prevalence of these errors highlights a critical gap in current translation practices, often resulting in texts that are not only grammatically flawed but also unnatural-sounding and potentially misleading to English native speakers. This paper argues that merely possessing bilingualism is insufficient for effective translation; rather, a profound understanding of both the source and target linguistic systems, coupled with a strong grasp of their respective cultural contexts, is imperative. The study concludes by offering pedagogical implications for translator training programs and proposes practical strategies to enhance translation quality, advocating for a more nuanced and context-sensitive approach to Indonesia-English translation.

Abstract

The ability to comprehend reading materials is one of the key components in the learning process, as it directly affects students' mastery of various academic subjects. In the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education, reading comprehension is not only important as a fundamental skill but also serves as a foundation for developing other language skills such as writing, speaking, and listening. However, many students still encounter difficulties in understanding English texts. These problems are often caused by several factors, including limited vocabulary, low motivation and interest in reading, as well as monotonous and unvaried teaching methods. This study aims to describe and analyze effective strategies for improving students’ reading comprehension skills through a literature review using a descriptive qualitative approach. By examining various scholarly sources and previous research, it was found that reading techniques such as skimming (reading quickly to grasp the main idea) and scanning (reading to locate specific information) are proven to be effective in improving reading efficiency. In addition, the application of cognitive and metacognitive strategies such as predicting text content, generating questions before and during reading, summarizing important information, making inferences from context, visualizing text, and monitoring comprehension consciously, have shown significant positive impacts on students’ reading comprehension abilities.Furthermore, the effectiveness of reading strategies is also influenced by both internal and external factors. Internal factors include individual learning styles, interest in reading, and student motivation. Meanwhile, external factors consist of the learning environment, the role of teachers in the classroom, and the teaching methods and media used. The combination of these factors determines the extent to which reading strategies can be optimally applied and produce maximal results. By implementing appropriate and varied reading strategies, students are not only able to understand reading content more deeply but also develop into active, reflective, and critical readers. They become better prepared to engage with different types of texts, both in academic contexts and daily life. Therefore, it is crucial for educators to understand the characteristics and learning needs of their students and integrate various relevant strategies and approaches into their teaching process. Teacher support through innovative and interactive instruction plays a vital role in promoting students’ academic success, particularly in reading comprehension skills.
