Abstract

This study systematically investigates common mistakes in Indonesia-English translation, identifying specific linguistic and cultural pitfalls that compromise target text quality. Utilizing a qualitative, corpus-based approach, the research analyzes a diverse range of translated materials, including academic papers, journalistic articles, and official documents, to pinpoint recurring error patterns. The analysis focuses on four key areas: grammatical inaccuracies (subject-verb agreement, tense usage, article omission), lexical misinterpretations (semantic incongruity, false cognates, collocations), syntactic interference from the source language, and cultural misunderstandings leading to inappropriate pragmatic choices or mistranslation of idiomatic expressions. Findings reveal that while some errors stem from a direct, word-for-word translation approach, others are indicative of a deeper lack of target language competence and cross-cultural awareness. The prevalence of these errors highlights a critical gap in current translation practices, often resulting in texts that are not only grammatically flawed but also unnatural-sounding and potentially misleading to English native speakers. This paper argues that merely possessing bilingualism is insufficient for effective translation; rather, a profound understanding of both the source and target linguistic systems, coupled with a strong grasp of their respective cultural contexts, is imperative. The study concludes by offering pedagogical implications for translator training programs and proposes practical strategies to enhance translation quality, advocating for a more nuanced and context-sensitive approach to Indonesia-English translation.

Abstract

The ability to comprehend reading materials is one of the key components in the learning process, as it directly affects students' mastery of various academic subjects. In the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education, reading comprehension is not only important as a fundamental skill but also serves as a foundation for developing other language skills such as writing, speaking, and listening. However, many students still encounter difficulties in understanding English texts. These problems are often caused by several factors, including limited vocabulary, low motivation and interest in reading, as well as monotonous and unvaried teaching methods. This study aims to describe and analyze effective strategies for improving students’ reading comprehension skills through a literature review using a descriptive qualitative approach. By examining various scholarly sources and previous research, it was found that reading techniques such as skimming (reading quickly to grasp the main idea) and scanning (reading to locate specific information) are proven to be effective in improving reading efficiency. In addition, the application of cognitive and metacognitive strategies such as predicting text content, generating questions before and during reading, summarizing important information, making inferences from context, visualizing text, and monitoring comprehension consciously, have shown significant positive impacts on students’ reading comprehension abilities.Furthermore, the effectiveness of reading strategies is also influenced by both internal and external factors. Internal factors include individual learning styles, interest in reading, and student motivation. Meanwhile, external factors consist of the learning environment, the role of teachers in the classroom, and the teaching methods and media used. The combination of these factors determines the extent to which reading strategies can be optimally applied and produce maximal results. By implementing appropriate and varied reading strategies, students are not only able to understand reading content more deeply but also develop into active, reflective, and critical readers. They become better prepared to engage with different types of texts, both in academic contexts and daily life. Therefore, it is crucial for educators to understand the characteristics and learning needs of their students and integrate various relevant strategies and approaches into their teaching process. Teacher support through innovative and interactive instruction plays a vital role in promoting students’ academic success, particularly in reading comprehension skills.

Abstract

This research investigates the challenges students face in understanding Western films, focusing on language and dialect differences, narrative complexity, and cultural factors. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data was collected through observation and interviews with students at SMP N 4 Sei Kanan. Findings indicate that language barriers, including unfamiliar accents and slang, complex plot structures with intricate storylines and character developments, and cultural nuances, such as differing social norms and historical references, pose significant difficulties for students. Additionally, students often struggle with idiomatic expressions and humor that do not translate well across cultures. This study suggests incorporating strategies to improve students' listening skills and cultural awareness through targeted educational interventions, such as integrating multimedia resources in the curriculum, conducting workshops on cultural contexts, and providing supplementary language support. Abstract

Most students found English learning at school less interesting because it still used one-way and teacher-centered methods. Therefore, this study explored how using Quizizz could enhance students' motivation in learning English at the junior high school level. Traditional learning methods, such as lectures and practice questions without interactive media support, made students feel bored and less motivated to learn. To overcome these problems, the use of digital media was considered one solution. Quizizz is a digital learning platform accessed via smartphones and an internet connection, providing interactive features such as multiple-choice Quizizz zes, real-time feedback, points, music, and leaderboards. These elements are designed to turn conventional learning into a fun, game-like experience that promotes competition and engagement among students. Unlike traditional methods that rely on passive listening and textbook exercises, Quizizz offers a more dynamic approach that encourages active participation. Based on this potential, the present study aimed to examine how using Quizizz could enhance students' motivation and improve their learning outcomes in English subjects, especially in a junior high school context where maintaining student interest is a key challenge. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The participants in this study consisted of four English teachers and thirty-one grade 7 students. Data analysis was conducted by reducing, presenting, and drawing conclusions from the collected data. The results showed that the use of Quizizz had a positive impact on increasing students' motivation and learning outcomes. The findings suggested that integrating technology in learning could be an innovative solution for improving the quality of English education in schools.
