Abstract

Obesity plays a significant role in estrogen production, which can lead to menstrual cycle disorders. This study aimed to determine differences in estrogen levels and menstrual cycles between obese and normal-weight female students at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Andalas. This study used the comparative cross-sectional design involving 32 obese respondents and 32 respondents with normal-weight status, selected through a systematic random sampling method. The study was conducted from November 2021 to July 2022. Estrogen levels were measured using the enzyme-linked immune assay (ELISA) method, and the menstrual cycle data were collected via interview. Statistical analysis was performed using an unpaired t-test and a Chi-square test. The results showed no significant difference in estrogen levels between the obese group (188.31±47.56 pg/mL) and the normal-weight group (181.76±51.06 pg/mL) (p > 0.05). However, abnormal menstrual cycles were more common in the obese group (29.7%) compared to the normal group (9.4%), with a p-value of 0.002. In conclusion, there are no differences in estrogen levels between the normal nutrition and obese groups; however, the menstrual cycles of these groups are different.

Abstract

Malnutrition among school-aged children in urban-industrial settings presents a dual burden of undernutrition and overnutrition. The aim of this study was to examine factors influencing the nutritional status of elementary school children in Batam, Indonesia. A case-control study was conducted in Batam, focusing on children aged 6–12 years, with malnourished cases (undernutrition and overnutrition) and well-nourished controls, along with their mothers. Respondents were selected through stratified random sampling from public elementary schools. Inclusion criteria encompassed children enrolled in these schools, while exclusion criteria involved children with chronic health conditions. Data were collected via structured interviews utilizing validated questionnaires, anthropometric assessments (weight-for-age and height-for-age), and parent-reported socioeconomic, behavioral and family characteristics. Statistical analysis involved binary logistic regression to identify significant risk factors associated with malnutrition. A total of 188 children, including 94 malnourished cases (40 undernutrition and 54 overnutrition) and 94 well-nourished controls. The findings revealed significant differences between cases and controls in socioeconomic factors (pocket money (p=0.027), family income (p=0.042)), behavioral factors (sedentary activity (p=0.019), dietary habits (p=0.037)) and family factors (maternal BMI, p=0.011; maternal nutritional knowledge, p=0.004; parenting style, p=0.035). Dominant risk factors for malnutrition (undernutrition or overnutrition) included poor dietary habits (adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 0.451; 95%CI: 0.225–0.901; p=0.024), maternal obesity class II (aOR: 0.126; 95%CI: 0.030–0.535; p=0.005), and low maternal nutritional knowledge (aOR: 0.294; 95%CI: 0.124–0.696; p=0.005). Targeted family-centered interventions focusing on dietary practices and maternal education are therefore recommended to address this issue.

Abstract

Zinc is an essential micronutrient in the human body as a cofactor of about 300 enzymes. Zinc is very instrumental in the growth process, including maintaining the thymus so that atrophy is not fast. Zinc deficiency can affect the immune system. Zinc deficiency can be caused due to a lack of zinc intake. In theory, many factors affect zinc intake, among others, community knowledge, education, economy, diet, habits, and customs. Lambung Bukit Village is a fostered village of Andalas University. Most people in this village are classified as economically deficient because the community generally farms. The level of public knowledge about zinc is still lacking. This service aims to increase public knowledge of the importance of zinc on body health and the provision of zinc supplements to prevent zinc deficiency and is expected to reduce morbidity and mortality due to infection in children. This activity has been carried out at Bustanul Ulum Elementary School in Batu Busuk Village, Lambung Bukit Village, Pauh District, Padang City. Counseling conducted to 48 people (parents of students and teachers). Almost all parents' knowledge is lacking about zinc, the role, source of zinc, and its relation to several diseases. We hope this counseling can increase public knowledge about the importance of zinc on the body, mainly to prevent susceptibility to infections and any food sources that contain zinc. The results of a health examination by pediatricians found two students suffering from Congenital Heart Disease (CHD), poor oral hygiene, and many teeth carious students. Giving zinc syrup to children aged 7-10 years is expected to prevent zinc deficiency in children.

Abstract

The class for pregnant women is a place to increase knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of mothers during pregnancy. Currently the world is facing the Covid-19 pandemic caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). The current condition of the Covid-19 pandemic has caused the mother's class activities to not be carried out properly. Health services must continue to run optimally, safe for patients, health workers including midwives. This activity aims to create a complete understanding in all sectors regarding maternal and child health services with preventive and promotive efforts through organizing, community empowerment and empowering women in the community. The method used is a mixed method, descriptive qualitative and quantitative by means of in-depth interviews and surveys conducted boldly (WA Group for pregnant women, and Via Phone, Video Call/SMS). The results of 6 pregnant women in RW III, it was found that 100% of pregnant women had never attended classes for pregnant women during the Covid-19 pandemic, and 100% of pregnant women were worried about pregnancy during the Covid-19 pandemic. Interventions were carried out in the form of advocacy to the puskesmas and midwives of supporting health centers, as well as empowering health cadres in carrying out classes for pregnant women by utilizing online technology via WhatsApp groups, Zoom Meetings, Video Calls and the Tiktok application. It is hoped that cadres will play an active role and collaborate with midwives and health workers in terms of providing health information, especially those related to the health of pregnant women by utilizing online media, so that the health of pregnant women is monitored during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Anemia in pregnancy can disrupt the process of growth and development of the fetus. The need for iron increases exponentially during pregnancy, to meet the increased demand for the fetoplacental unit, causing pregnant women to be at high risk of developing anemia. The high incidence of anemia in RW I Pampangan Nan XX Village, Lubuk Begalung District, needs to be taken to find out the causal factors so that promotive and preventive action innovations can be carried out on the incidence of anemia in the community. One of them is the class for pregnant women online. The activity was carried in ampangan Nan XX Village, Lubuk Begalung District. The respondents in this activity were all pregnant women who were in RW I, Pampangan Nan XX Village, Lubuk Begalung District, totaling 8 people. From the results of data collection, it is known that 62.5% of pregnant women are anemic. Data analysis showed that there were two factors related to the incidence of anemia in pregnant women in RW 01, namely the mother's employment status (p = 0.018) and the gap of pregnancy (p = 0.018). Results in-depth interview shows that the current pandemic conditions have stopped classes for pregnant women and the community's economy has declined so that access to information about pregnancy is very limited. Classes for pregnant women are carried out online, using media such as groups on WhatsApp to facilitate information both before and after the implementation of online pregnant women classes. Information with ppt and video media can increase the understanding of pregnant women regarding the anemia information conveyed. It is hoped that health workers will be able to take advantage of the continued program that has been formed so that pregnant women can get good information about pregnancy, especially about the prevention of anemia.
