Abstract

The Integrated Service Post (Pos Pelayanan Terpadu/Posyandu) closely monitors children's growth and development through routine weighing to detect any growth and development disorders early. Classes are provided for mothers to discuss health services, nutrition, and growth and development, facilitated by trained personnel using Maternal and Child Health (MCH) books. We aim to raise awareness among the people of RT 01 RW 01, Gates Nan XX sub-district, about the importance of monitoring the growth and development of babies and toddlers. Using the USG scoring method, an analytical survey was conducted to identify community issues and establish priorities. Classroom interventions were performed for mothers of toddlers using MCH and Audio-Visual media, and activities were evaluated for effectiveness. Results of the health data collection that the service team carried out previously at Gates Nan XX Village showed that the number of babies aged 29 days-12 months was two people with a history of weighing every three months, one person (50%), while the population of toddlers aged 1-5 years is nine people, with a history of not having been weighed in the last three months as many as seven people (78%). After the intervention of mother empowerment through the toddler mother class, it is obtained that the mothers of toddlers are committed to monitoring the growth and development of toddlers at the posyandu and actively participating in the class of mothers of toddlers actively participate in attending toddler mother classes.

Abstract

This study aimed to clarify the correlation of fructose intake with uric acid level and blood pressure in young adults. This study used a cross-sectional design, conducted in Padang, West Sumatera province of Indonesia in 2014. The subjects consist of 109 students of Medical Faculty of Andalas University, aged 18–23 years old, were randomly selected to participate. Data on fructose intake were obtained using food frequency questionnaire. Uric acid levels was determined by the enzymatic colorimetric method. Resting blood pressure was measured twice using a sphygmomanometer. Data were analyzed using Rank-Spearman correlation test. The median of fructose intake was 74.3 g (min 23.4–max 160.2). The median of systolic blood pressure was 117 mmHg (min 100–max 145) and median of diastolic blood pressure was 70 mmHg (min 60–max 90). The mean uric acid levels was 5.2±1.56  mg/dl and 25% of the male subject had high uric acid levels. Fructose intake had no significant correlation with SBP (r=0.026; p=0.851) nor with DBP (r=0.051; p=0.712).  However, there was a strong correlation between fructose intake with uric acid level (r=0.660; p<0.001). The study found that fructose intake shows a strong correlation with uric acid level but not with blood pressure in young adult.

Abstract

Anemia is a global health problem characterized by low hemoglobin and ferritin levels due to iron deficiency, which affects growth, cognition, and disease risk, particularly in children and women of reproductive age. Local food–based nutritional interventions such as skipjack tuna (heme iron), spinach (non-heme iron), and dadih (probiotics) have the potential to provide synergistic effects in improving iron status. This study aimed to determine the effect of cookies made from a combination of skipjack tuna flour and spinach with the addition of dadih probiotics on serum ferritin levels, as well as the effectiveness of Sodium Nitrite (NaNO₂) in decreasing ferritin and hemoglobin levels as indicators of anemia. The study used a Post-Test Only Control Group design with 36 female Wistar rats induced with anemia using NaNO₂ at a dose of 25 mg/200 g BW for 18 days, then divided into six treatment groups for 28 days. Ferritin levels were measured using the ELISA method. The results showed that administering cookies made from the combination of skipjack tuna flour and spinach with dadih probiotics significantly increased ferritin levels (P=0.000) compared to the control and single-ingredient groups. NaNO₂ was proven effective as an anemia-inducing agent. This combined cookie formulation has the potential to improve serum ferritin levels.

Abstract

Background: Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammation of the pilosebaceous unit. Although acne vulgaris is not fatal, it can cause psychological effects. This study aimed to compare the quality of life, anxiety, and depression levels based on the severity of acne vulgaris among medical students at Andalas University. Methods: This was an observational-analytic study with a cross-sectional design. It was conducted from May to June 2023. The population included the third-grade students of the Medical Study Program of the Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University, who had acne vulgaris. The respondents were 70 people, recruited with consecutive sampling techniques. This research used Lehmann classifications to classify acne severity, the Cardiff Acne Disability Index (CADI) to assess quality of life, and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) to assess anxiety and depression. The statistical analysis used the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Results: Most female respondents, aged 20 years old, experienced mild acne vulgaris (84.3%). Additionally, the respondents predominantly had mild quality of life disorders (80%), normal anxiety level (32.9%), and normal depression level (52.9%). The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test found no relationship between the severity of acne vulgaris with quality of life (p = 0.076), anxiety level (p = 0.623), and depression level (p = 0.751). Conclusion: The results showed that most respondents had mild acne vulgaris, mild impairment in quality of life, normal anxiety level, and normal depression level. Statistical tests revealed no significant association between the severity of acne vulgaris and these variables.

Abstract

Background: Optimal growth and development in toddlers require appropriate food for growing toddlers. Stunting indicates inadequate nutritional intake in children. Purpose: To determine the risk factors and determinants associated with stunted infant development growth. Method: A descriptive quantitative with analytical survey specially focusing on cross-sectional method. The study took place from September 2024 to July 2025 in Dadok Tunggul Hitam Community Health Center, Padang. The independent variables studied were toddler age, gender, birth weight history, exclusive breastfeeding history, number of siblings, mother's age, mother's education, mother's occupation, family income, and gadget use, while the dependent variable was toddler growth. Using random sampling and the Slovin formula, 86 respondents meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected and categorized into two groups: suspect and normal. Data analysis began with univariate tests to describe the distribution of respondent characteristics, followed by bivariate analysis using the chi-square test and multivariate analysis with logistic regression. Results: The logistic regression results show that the most influential factor on the occurrence of suspicious developmental events is gadget use, especially in the high use category, with an increased risk of up to 18 times (Exp(B) = 18.125; p = 0.000). Toddler age also plays a significant role, with an approximately 5-fold increase in risk (Exp(B) = 5.406; p = 0.008). The number of siblings and family income also contribute each increasing the likelihood of developmental disorders by approximately 3–4 times (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Gadget use is the factor most strongly linked to growth delays in toddlers.
