Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze risk factors related to pregnancy nutritional status on the linear growth of newborn infants. The data used in this research was secondary data from longitudinal studies of nutritional status of pregnant women and their offspring in Bogor District. The variables used included body weight at early pregnancy, body height, weight gain, serum protein, serum albumin, hemoglobin, serum zinc, serum retinol, energy adequacy, protein adequacy and protein density at second and third trimester of pregnancy. A multiple logistic regression was applied to analyze the risk factors. The results showed that vitamin A deficiency (serum retinol <20 μg/dl) of the second trimester and body mass index <18.5 kg/m2 at early pregnancy, are the risk factors of the linear growth of newborn infants (OR = 11.12 and 8.84). This implies that normal nutritional status at early pregnancy is important in preventing stunting among newborn infants. Keywords: body mass index, linear growth, newborn infants, pregnant women, vitamin A deficiency

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the pace of curing process and body weight recovery of pulmonary tuberculosis (Tb) patients receiving propolis supplementation. This study was a randomized controlled trial conducted on 50 pulmonary Tb patients that were assigned into three groups as follows: receiving standard-dose antituberculosis drugs (ATDs) + 20 drops of placebo propolis (P0); receiving standard-dose ATDs + 20 drops of propolis with concentration of 6% (P1); and receiving standard-dose ATDs + 20 drops of propolis with concentration of 30% (P2). The results showed that the mean time ratio needed for sputum smear conversion to negative present of acid resitant bacteria in P0, P1 and P2 groups were weeks 10, 8 and 5, respectively. In the second week, mean body weight of P0 and P1 groups decreased by 2.4% and 0.2%, respectively. In contrast, the mean body weight in P2 group increased by 1.5% (p<0.05; Mann-Whitney test). In the same week, mean body mass index (BMI) of P0 and P1 groups decreased by 1.6 and 0.1, respectively. Conversely, the mean BMI of P2 group increased by 0.3. The changes were significantly different (p<0.05). The results conclusively indicated that supplementation of 20 drops of propolis with a concentration of 30% as an adjuvant to standard ATDs for the treatment of pulmonary Tb patients was beneficial to accelerate treatment effect and body weight recovery.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze intake of folic acid, B12 and C of pregnant women (PW) in Indonesia. This study used secondary data from a cross-sectional study, so called Total Diet Study conducted in year 2014. The food consumption data were collected using the 24-hour dietary recall method. Total subjects of this study were 606 PW aged 14-49 old. Data of dietary intake of  folic acid, vitamin B12, and vitamin C were analyzed using Indonesian food composition tables (FCT), nutrisurvey software, nutrition fact and FCT from United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The results showed that mean intake of folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin C were 167.2±145.5 µg/d, 3.5±5.3 µg/d, 61.3±75.8 mg/d, respectively. The prevalence of severely deficiency of folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin C were 88.3%, 34.5% and 46.9% respectively. Logistic regression analysis showed that the younger PW from middle and low economic status had higher risk for folic acid deficiency. PW with education level less than and equal to senior high school with middle and low economic status had higher risk for vitamin B12 deficiency. PW with education level less than and equal to senior high school had higher risk for vitamin C deficiency. Consumption of folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin C of PW was low, so the consumption of vitamin sources was very important to prevent problems during pregnancy, such as anemia, premature, and also maternal and child mortality.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to analyze micronutrient deficiencies (Ca, Fe, Zn, Vitamin A and C) of Indonesian adults using probability method (PBM) and cut-off point method (CPM). This research was conducted by analyzing secondary data from Total Diet Study of the Ministry of Health of Indonesia, obtained from 24-h food recall method. The subjects were 58, 014 adults aged 19-49 years. The nutrient requirement from Institute of Medicine were used as benchmark. Both PBM and CPM were applied to assess micronutrient deficiencies. The results showed that by applying PBM, the prevalence of calcium, iron, zinc, vitamin A and C deficiencies was 54.2%, 36.4%, 74.3%, 44.8% and 71.4% respectively; while the prevalence of calcium, iron, zinc, vitamin A and C deficiencies using CPM-100 was 63.9%, 42.5%, 80.7%, 55.8% and 81.7% respectively. PBM result showed more men than women were categorized as suffering from Zn, Vitamin A and C deficiencies; and more women were categorized as Ca and Fe deficiencies. The application of CPM-100 tended to result in overestimation compared to PBM. The nutrient densities of Ca, Fe, Zn, Vitamin A and C were higher in women than in men (p <0.05). The nutrient densities of Ca, Zn, vitamin A and C were below the recommended level for both men and women. This implies micronutrient deficiencies are prevalent among Indonesian adults thus there is a need to improve the quality of their diet. This can be achieved by increasing the consumption of protein source foods (fish, meat and legume), fruits and vegetables as sources of micronutrients.
