Abstract

Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) in pregnant women remains a major nutritional issue in Indonesia and contributes to adverse birth outcomes and the risk of childhood stunting. Community-based interventions that integrate nutrition education and food supplementation have shown promise but remain underutilized. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an integrated nutrition intervention, consisting of Behavior Change Communication (BCC)-based education and local food-based supplementary feeding (PMT), on improving the Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) and nutritional status of pregnant women in high-stunting prevalence areas. A 16-week quasi-experimental pre–post study was conducted among 175 pregnant women in Purbalingga, Serang, and Bogor, Indonesia. Participants received weekly group-based BCC education and daily local snack supplementation (≥350 kcal/day). MUAC, weight, BMI, hemoglobin levels, and dietary adequacy (energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate) were assessed pre- and post-intervention. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test and multiple linear regression. The mean MUAC increased significantly from 22.7 ± 1.1 cm to 23.6 ± 1.0 cm (p < 0.001), with a 27.4% reduction in CED prevalence. Regression analysis indicated that dietary compliance and baseline hemoglobin were strong predictors of MUAC improvement. The intervention also significantly increased maternal weight, BMI, and hemoglobin levels, while protein adequacy showed the most substantial improvement, aligning dietary intake more closely with national recommendations. The integration of BCC-based education with local PMT significantly improved maternal nutritional outcomes, particularly MUAC, protein adequacy, and hemoglobin status, thereby reducing the risk of CED and anemia. This dual-component approach is feasible for community-level stunting prevention and supports its inclusion in antenatal care services.

Abstract

Tele-exercise delivers remote physical activity programs via digital platforms, enhancing accessibility and adherence, making it a promising strategy to address obesity among workers. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of tele-exercise programs on body fat percentage, lipid profile, mental health measures and Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) gene expression measured via venipuncture & RT-PCR in obese office employees. A total of 33 overweight or obese employees (male/female, 18-45 years old, Body Mass Index (BMI) 23-30 kg/m2) were randomly assigned to the strength (SE) group, strength-cardio (SC) group, and control (CT) group. The strength exercise protocol included core training, circuit training, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and Tabata training; cardio exercise includes low-high impact aerobic exercises. Each group was given nutrition education, whereas the two intervention groups participated in tele-exercise three times/week for twelve weeks. Tele-exercise was delivered via ZOOM application. Mental health indicators were measured using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-42) questionnaire. Compliance levels between intervention groups did not differ significantly (p>0.05). There was a significant reduction in bodyweight in the SC group (p=0.046). Blood High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) levels increased only in the SC group (0.50 mg/dL), but decreased in the SE group and CT group. SIRT1 gene expression increased in SE and CT groups (2.39- and 5.33-fold, respectively), whereas a significant decrease was observed in the SC group (p=0.043). Only the SE group showed a significant reduction in stress level (p=0.03), with a decrease of 30.9%. Strength exercise intervention improves total cholesterol level by -19.09 mg/dL.

Abstract

Hypertension prevalence and its cardiometabolic complications continue to rise, yet evidence syntheses have not clearly mapped how lemon (Citrus limon) intervention form, dose, and duration relate to blood pressure and biomarker responses, limiting translation into practical dietary guidance. This PRISMA 2020 systematic review synthesized evidence on lemon interventions for systolic/diastolic blood pressure (SBP/DBP) and biomarkers in hypertensive or elevated-blood-pressure populations. Searches of Scopus and PubMed, supplemented by ScienceDirect, relevant platforms, and Google Scholar, were conducted in December 2024–January 2025. Randomized controlled trials of lemon juice, extracts, peel preparations, or essential-oil aromatherapy versus placebo/usual care/other citrus/no intervention were eligible; multi-ingredient regimens containing lemon were extracted but interpreted separately. Screening and extraction used Rayyan, and quality was assessed using the Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP) domains. Thirteen studies met criteria; heterogeneity in formulations, dosing, and outcome reporting precluded meta-analysis, so narrative synthesis was applied. Fresh lemon juice and lemon extracts showed the consistent SBP/DBP reductions, especially with higher doses and durations ≥2–4 weeks, whereas short-term or low-dose regimens more often yielded null results; aromatherapy and peel-powder capsules showed mixed effects. Certainty was limited to moderate due to risk of bias and diversity of interventions. Lemon may be considered a dietary adjunct in lifestyle management, not a replacement for antihypertensive therapy, and may be communicated through halalan thayyiban self-care framing.

Abstract

Maternal nutrition intake, as well as nutritional status, influence breast milk production and nutrient content. To reduce stunting, the GAS KIPAS Stunting Program (Gerakan Anak Sehat – Kolaborasi Inklusif Pengusaha Indonesia Atasi Stunting) provided high-nutrient supplementary foods for lactating mothers. This program was implemented in several priority locations. This study analyzed the associations between contribution and the adequacy levels of energy and nutrients from supplementary foods with perceived breast milk sufficiency. Secondary data were obtained from the 2023 GAS KIPAS Stunting Program. This study used a one-group pretest–posttest pre-experimental design without a control group. Nutritional intake of supplementary foods was obtained using the Comstock method. Statistical analyses included the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Spearman's rank correlation. The results showed no significant association between the energy and nutrient contribution of supplementary foods and perceived breast milk sufficiency. However, calcium adequacy level showed a significant positive correlation (r=0.38; p=0.039). During lactation, mothers require increased micronutrient intake to support maternal health and infant development. Conclusion: Providing supplementary foods for lactating mothers does not directly affect mothers’ perceptions. These findings suggest that a larger sample size, measurement of milk production volume, and a 24-hour food recall may be needed to optimize intervention outcomes in supporting exclusive breastfeeding as a stunting prevention

Abstract

Inadequate breakfast intake and malnutrition remain significant public health concerns among school-aged children in Indonesia, particularly in regions with a high Prevalence of Undernourishment (PoU). To address this, the National Food Agency (BAPANAS) implemented the GENIUS program (Gerakan Edukasi dan Pemberian Pangan Bergizi untuk Siswa), which integrates nutrition education with the provision of standardized nutritious snacks. This study aims to analyze the impact of the GENIUS program on breakfast adequacy and nutritional status among elementary school students in ten Indonesian provinces with PoU exceeding 5%. A pre-experimental pre–post study design was employed, involving 4,953 students in grades 4-6. The intervention consisted of 20 nutrition education sessions and the daily provision of standardized snacks (250–300 kcal per serving) and UHT milk over a two-month period. Breakfast adequacy was assessed using 24-hour breakfast recalls. Snack compliance was also monitored daily. The intervention led to significant improvements in breakfast nutrient intake (p < 0.05). Mean energy intake increased from 141.9 kcal to 393.5 kcal, protein from 4.0 g to 11.5 g, fat from 5.6 g to 14.9 g, and carbohydrates from 17.7 g to 48.9 g. Substantial gains were also observed for key micronutrients, including calcium, phosphorus, and iron . Despite these dietary improvements, BMI-for-age z-scores showed no meaningful change (-0.2 ± 1.4 at baseline vs. -0.2 ± 1.5 at endline), consistent with the short duration of the intervention. Snack compliance was notably high, with 93.5% of students achieving high adherence (≥70%). The GENIUS program effectively enhanced the quality and adequacy of breakfast among students in food-insecure regions. While the two-month duration was sufficient to improve nutrient intake, it was inadequate to produce measurable changes in nutritional status. Future programs should consider longer implementation periods and strengthened school-family engagement to support sustained improvements in growth outcomes

Abstract

Breakfast is an essential component of a healthy diet for school-aged children, yet it is often neglected. This study aimed to analyze the association between breakfast intake, blood glucose levels, and short-term memory among elementary school students in Nagan Raya Regency. This study employed a cross-sectional design involving 150 students from grades IV, V, and VI across three primary schools in Nagan Raya District with a purposive sampling technique.  Short-term memory was assessed at 08:30 a.m. using a picture recognition memory test, and blood glucose levels were measured at 09:00 a.m. using the finger-prick method. Breakfast intake was measured using the recall method.  Data on student characteristics (gender, daily allowance, and mother’s education) and nutritional status were sourced from the 2023 GENIUS program (Nutrition education and snacks program for school children). The statistical tests used were the Mann–Whitney U test and the Spearman rank correlation test. The results showed that breakfast energy intake was positively and significantly associated with blood glucose levels, and blood glucose levels were positively and significantly associated with short-term memory. Consuming a complete breakfast plays an important role in maintaining stable blood glucose levels and supporting of short-term memory among primary school students.
