Abstract

THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN FREE THYROXINE AND VEGETABLES COOKING AND SERUM CHOLINESTERASE OF CHILD BEARING AGE WOMEN IN ENDEMIC GOITRE AREAPesticides, a goitrogenic pollutant, strongly bind iodine to make a complex substance which iodinecan not optimally be utilized and leads to impair thyroxine hormone production. Farmers in Pakissub district of Magelang district often put pesticides of organophosphate and carbamate groups toincrease vegetables yield. The retained pesticides in the foods can be minimized by cooking. Todetermine the association between free thyroxine sera and vegetable cooking and cholinesterasesera. A cross-sectional study design was applied to 205 of child bearing age women (CBAW) of 17– 45 years of age in Pakis sub district of Magelang District, Central Java. Vegetable in whichpesticide may persist were cooked in two ways, namely were boiled and tumis (stir fried). Bloodspicement were drawn for fT4 and cholinesterase axamination. It was indicated that serum FT4 of68,3 % of CBAW were normal, while 31,7 % of them were low and 5.1% of CBAW with low serumCHE. There was a significant association between the way of cooking , status of serum CHE andcontraceptive use of family planning with to status of serum FT4. The child bearing age womenthat consume vegetables cooked by “tumis” (cooking stir fried) having higher risk of low serum freethyroxin status, 2,5 times than that of by boiling. CBAW with low cholinesterase enzyme (CHE)having lower risk of low serum free thyroxin hormone status (FT4), 10 times than that of withnormal CHE. CBAW with hormonal contraception having higher risk of low serum FT4, 0,50times than that usage non hormonal contraception. Abstract

EFFICACY OF IRON-MULTIVITAMIN SUPPLEMENT FOR IMPROVING THE IRON STATUS OF ADOLESCENT FEMALESThe study was aimed to analyze the efficacy of supplementation iron-multivitamin for improvingthe iron status of adolescent females through the double-blind trial. Subjects were 224 of the firstgrade university students (IPB) who were randomly allocated to three study groups through adouble blind trial. The first group received only placebo (control group); the second group received60 mg iron, 250 ug folate (B-F group); the third group received 60 mg iron,800 ug folate, 4200 ugretinyl acetate, 500 mg vitamin C, and 16.8 ug vitamin B12 (B-MV group). All supplements weredistributed and consumed weekly during 25 weeks. The mean changes in Hb, STfR and SFamong the groups were tested with Ancova and adjusted with BMI; capsule compliance;food/snack compliance; adequacy of energy, protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron; and baselinevalue of Hb, STfR, SF. The results showed the demographics and nutritional characteristics ofsamples were not significantly different. At the baseline, the mean of haemoglobin(Hb=126.2±13.1 g/l) and serum ferritin (SF=18.3±15.9 ug/l) were not significantly different amongthe three groups (p0.05). However, the serum transferrin receptor (STfR) was lower in the control(5.8 ± 3.2 mg/l) than B-F (7.9 ±4.4 mg/l) and B-MV (11.8±5.5 mg/l). After 25 week ofsupplementation, the mean change of hemoglobin was not different among the three groups (10.1g/l; p0.05). The B-MV group significantly lower decreased in STfR (-4.2 mg/l) and higherincreased in SF (+13.4 ug/l) compared to B-F and control group (p0.05). Meanwhile, only theSTfR in B-F group (-1.3 ug/l) was significantly lower than control group (p0.05). This implied theimportant of the multi-vitamin to complement the iron supplementation. Keywords: haemoglobin (Hb), serum transferrin receptor (STfR), serum ferritin (SF), iron status, iron-multivitamin, iron-folate, adolescent female

Abstract

Obesity is one of five death risks globally. This is worsened by the increasing sedentary nature of work, where adults spend most of their time. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic causes many employees to work from home. Online exercise in home or tele-exercise may potentially manage this. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of tele-exercise on decreasing body weight of obese employee, or if it must be combined with nutrition tele-counseling. The design of this study is Pre-Post-Test Quasi-Experimental. This study was conducted on obese office employee in Jakarta with two intervention groups, one who receive tele-exercise intervention and the other who receive tele-exercise and nutrition tele-counseling. Subjects were divided into tele-exercise (n=25) and tele-exercise and nutrition tele-counseling (n=38). Subjects received tele-exercise 30 minutes per session, three sessions per week for six weeks. Tele-counseling was done by WhatsApp application every day, consisting of balanced nutrition education and calorie restriction for weight loss. Paired t-test was done on subject’s body weight before and after intervention. The group who received tele-exercise and tele-counseling experienced weight loss significantly with average bodyweight from 77.36±11.83 kg to 75.49±11.58 kg (Δ=-1.87 kg, p<0.05), while the same didn’t happen on another group (Δ=0.36, p>0.05). This research showed that tele-exercise is not very effective on decreasing obese office employee’s body weight, but must be combined with nutrition tele-exercise to achieve significant weight loss.

Abstract

The unhealthy Lifestyle of office employees may affect cardiovascular disease risk and other chronic illnesses. In this ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there’s a decrease in physical activity and exercise intensity in-office employees, while increasing psychological stress may reduce physical fitness. One of the solutions to these problems is by implementing tele-counseling and tele-exercise technology. The purpose of this study is to test the effects of tele-exercise and tele-counseling intervention against obese employees’ fitness levels. This study uses a pre-post-test quasi-experimental design on one group without a control group, with subjects consisting of males and females with BMI 25-30 kg/m2. Subjects received tele-exercise intervention for 30 minutes per session, three sessions per week for 12 weeks, while tele-counseling was done by Zoom and WhatsApp every day. Fitness tests include 1-minute push-up and sit-up count, sit-and-reach, and bleep test. Subjects experience significant improvement on all aspects of fitness level (strength, flexibility, and cardiorespiratory fitness), with the most significant improvement being flexibility. This study proves that tele-exercise and nutrition tele-counseling is an effective program to improve obese employees’ wellness. Moreover, this method is a good alternative for substituting direct, face-to-face exercise and nutrition counseling in this pandemic time.

Abstract

The problem of overnutrition and obesity tend to increase year by. Office employee are susceptible to physical inactivity and obesity. In context of current pandemic, exercising via online media, termed ‘tele-exercise’ may be an effective alternative intervention. However, the effect of compliance and timing of exercise on overall health-related output are still not often discussed. The purpose of the study is to compare the effect of tele-exercise done during working hours vs. after working hours on obese office employee’s weight loss and improvement of body fat percentage, as well as their relation to compliance level. The design of this study is quasi-experimental design, with obese office employee as participants, which then grouped into after work exercise (AW, n = 36, 1-hour duration) and mid-work exercise (DW, n = 21, 30-minute duration). Total sampling was used since the target population were under 100 people. Exercises were done 3 times/week for 12 weeks. Data collected were sample characteristics, bodyweight, and percentage of body fat. Both timing of intervention is effective on reducing body weight significantly (p<0.05). Significant reduction (p<0.05) on percentage of body fat is only occurring in DW group. Compliance level for AW and DW group are 63.75% and 61.23%, respectively, and being insignificant to each other (p>0.05). The contribution of compliance in shorter exercise/DW on body fat loss and weight loss is 23.1% and 20.9%, respectively; while the contribution of compliance in longer exercise/AW is 11.3% on body weight loss. A short, mid-working exercise have the similar or even better effect than 1-hour after-work exercise session on weight loss and body fat loss. We recommend tele-exercising during working hours for at least 30 minutes to achieve significant body weight and body fat loss.

Abstract

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic causes lower physical activity while exercise intensity also decreases. At the same time, the stress level is increasing, causing low physical fitness level. Due to the importance of human health and company cost to increase their employees’ physical fitness level, and with regard to the limited time of office employees, this research aimed to analyze the effect of tele-exercise duration on the fitness level of obese employees. The design of this study was pre-posttest quasi-experimental design. The subjects of this research were male and female obese employees, aged 18-45 years old, from Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) company in Jakarta, Indonesia. Subjects then were randomly assigned to a 30-minutes exercise session group (n = 20) or 60-minutes exercise session group (n = 19). Statistical analysis included paired t-test and independent t-test to analyze differences between groups. All aspects of fitness analyzed in this study (strength, flexibility, and cardiorespiratory endurance) were increased in both groups significantly (p<0.05). It was shown that 60-minutes exercise sessions improve overall aspects of fitness better than 30-minutes exercise sessions, except for cardiovascular fitness (VO2 Max). Using an independent t-test, there were no significant differences between 30-minute and 60-minute exercise sessions in terms of mean changes (p>0.05). This study showed that tele-exercise, even if it is done in a short period, 30-minute duration, may improve the overall aspect of fitness level significantly for obese employees. Moreover, in this pandemic time, this kind of program is a better alternative than face-to-face, direct exercise intervention.
