Abstract

This study was to examine food security discourse between actors in the farmers family and the formation of the power of women’s knowledge. The method used was a qualitative method using constructivism paradigm. Research findings indicate that there were three main actors in the discourse of food security namely the government, community and business. Each attempt to practice their discourse on family farmers. It turns out that in practice this discourse, there were interaction between actors in synergy. But the most dominant discourse was discourse of community that practiced by the family while the government discourse as a supplement and entrepreneurs discourse as a spur. Formation of the power of women’s knowledge by actors were flexibles/elastics and there were differences acces of formation in power of women’s knowledge between women in different social classes

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Small dense low-density lipoprotein (sdLDL-C) is an atherogenic lipoprotein. Increased sdLDL-C concentration was hypothesized to be associated with obesity and diabetes mellitus (DM).Objectives: The study aimed to determine the association between sdLDL-C, central obesity, and DM among Indonesian adults, controlled by personal and clinical parameters.Materials and Methods: This study used secondary data from Basic Health Research 2013 of the Ministry of Health, which applied a cross-sectional study design. For this purpose, 30,548 subjects aged 19-79 were analyzed. The sdLDL-C was performed by using Sampson Formula derived from conventional lipid panels. As investigated by Sampson, the formula referred to cLDL-C (calculated LDL-C) and ElbLDL-C (estimated large buoyant LDL-C).Results: There was a positive association between sdLDL-C and central obesity (OR: 3.94; 95% CI: 3.13-3.89), as well as sdLDL-C and DM status (OR: 1.98; 95% CI; 1.43-2.75) after adjusting the personal and clinical parameters. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that the increment of sdLDL-C level and central obesity affected DM status in Indonesian adults. It implies that the sdLDL-C was a potential biomarker to assess the risk of DM.Keywords: Central obesity, Diabetes mellitus, Hypertension, Indonesian adult, sdLDL-C

Abstract

Human milk is the gold standard for infant nutrition during the first six months of life. According to Indonesia Demographic and Health Survey in 2017, about 45% of mothers in Indonesia provided pre-lacteal feeding within three days postpartum. Low or no milk production and perceived insufficient milk for the infants need were common reasons for pre-lacteal feeding. Galactagogues are believed to help augment human milk production. Therefore, galactagogue consumption is highly recommended, especially natural galactagogue, to help overcome low milk production problem. Most natural galactagogues are used as a local tradition only. Scientific studies regarding the phytochemical compounds and the mechanisms involved are still very limited. This narrative review aimed to describe selected research articles reporting the potency of torbangun, katuk, kelor, and papaya leaves as known plants acting as natural galactagogues in Indonesia. A total of 22 original research articles from Indonesia written in Indonesian or English over a 20 years period were included in this review. Studies were selected if selected natural galactagogues were evaluated at least for the proposed mechanism of action and effects. The data have shown strong evidence about the positive effect of torbangun, katuk, kelor, and papaya leaves as natural galactagogues on increasing human milk production. The five leaves contain different phytoestrogens that have an estrogen effect to stimulate prolactin production and increase milk production.

Abstract

Maternal body fluids imbalance affects amniotic fluid, serum sodium-potassium, edema, and preeclampsia. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) is a growth hormone and a regulator in sodium balance regulation. This study aimed to determine the correlation of IGF-1, zinc, calcium, and sodium with hydration status and the nutrients impact to IGF-1 based on hydration status of pregnant women at Kebon Jeruk Health-Center, West Jakarta. This cohort-prospective study was conducted in December 2016 to January 2018. A total of 66 pregnant women in the second trimester were examined. Urine color, urine specific gravity, serum sodium, serum osmolality and urine were used as hydration status indicators. Zn, Ca, Na, and IGF-1 levels as the growth indicator from mother to fetus. Pearson correlation test, independent t-test and linear regression were used in statistical analysis. There were no differences in IGF-1, Zn, Ca, and Na serum between the two groups (p³0.05). There was no relationship between Ca, Na and IGF-1 level (p³0.05). The regression results show a possitive relation that low zinc serum affect IGF-1 level in dehydrated pregnant women. Therefore, it is necessary for pregnant women to consume zinc-rich foods to increase IGF-1 level and keep hydration status with water consume 3.0 L per-day.

Abstract

The study aimed to analyze the correlation between Blood Glucose levels (BG) and Short-Term Memory scores (STM) among primary school children in Bogor, as controlled by Socioeconomic Status (SES), BMI-for-age (BAZ), Hemoglobin (Hb), folate, and vitamin B12 levels. It was a cross-sectional study applied for 915 students of the 4th–5th grades from 16 primary schools in the suburban area of the Cijeruk district. Morning blood samples were drawn from venous puncture of the inner arm. The specimens were then transported to laboratories to analyze the BG (hexokinase methods), Hb (non-cyanide Hb), as well as folate, and vitamin B12 using Liquid Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry. The STM was obtained through an object recall test performed by trained psychologists. The actual body weight and height were measured to determine BAZ. The characteristics of subjects and their SES were collected through interviews and structured questionnaires. Mann-Whitney and Chi-square tests were performed to compare differences between variables that were grouped by genders. Correlations between predictors and predicted variables were analyzed using simple logistic regression for the bivariates analysis and a binary logistic regression test for the multivariate analysis. There were significant differences in BAZ, BG, and STM between boys and girls (p<0.05). Most of the subject's BAZ was normal (85.2%). About 50.9% of subjects had normal Hb, 99.8% had folate deficiency, 47.8% had normal vitamin B12 level, and 54.9% had good STM score. There was no significant correlation between BAZ, Hb, folate, and vitamin B12 level with STM (p≥0.05), respectively. There was a significant positive correlation between BG and STM (p<0.05; OR=1.583; 95% CI:1.067−2.348) after being controlled by BAZ, subject’s characteristic, and SES. In conclusion, optimum blood glucose level improved the STM in primary school children. Therefore, provision of balanced diet, more especially breakfast, for school children is highly important.

Abstract

This systematic review aimed to answer whether an additional amount of water intake can increase the Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) in pregnant women with oligohydramnios. Article searches were conducted and data was obtained from “SCOPUS”, “EBSCO”, “PUBMED”, “COCHRANE” and “Google Search” databases using the following keywords: “hypovolemic”, “dehydration” “pregnancy” “outcome”, “hydration”. “water intake”, “oligohydramnios”, and “amniotic fluid index”. We used MeSH headings (hydration pregnancy) for search keyword, Inclusion criteria were subjects who were pregnant women with oligohydramnios (without any pathological disorder in the mother and fetus), the outcomes include AFI of <5 cm, study design was prospective cohorts and clinical trials, consumption of plain water (non-calorie beverages) and language restriction applied for articles published in English. Out of 391 articles, eight articles that met these criteria for anaylsis. Result showed that additional amount of water intake for pregnant women with oligohydramnios without maternal/fetal abnormalities in the third trimester (28−37 weeks) can increase AFI. Oral maternal hydration gave a better effect than intravenous maternal hydration on AFI. The additional amount of water intake per day required by pregnant women with oligohydramnios to increase AFI to normal ranges from 1,500 to 2,500 ml depending on the condition of each pregnant woman. Additional water intake via oral can be a strategy for oligohydramnios therapy in pregnant women.

Abstract

This review aimed to identify the determinants of nutritional and health factors associated with high risk of Low Birth Weight (LBW) among infants in Indonesia. The review was conducted systematically based on all articles published between 2012–2022 in PubMed, ScienceDirect, and SAGE databases. In the end, four articles were used in this review. The results showed that potential risk factors associated with LBW are maternal nutritional factors such as Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) (25%) and pre-pregnancy Body Mass Index (BMI) (50%), and maternal health factors that can be assessed during routine Antenatal Care (ANC). Therefore, identification of risk factors for LBW is important to minimize the incidence of LBW.
