Abstract

Problem-solving activities in mathematics learning are usually realized through solving word problems. Students' difficulties in solving word problems can lead to errors. This research was conducted with the aim of describing the types of mistakes made by class VII A students of SMP Negeri 1 Dau in solving story questions on integer arithmetic operations using the Newman Error Analysis (NEA) procedure. This research uses a descriptive analysis method. The data collection technique used in this study is the test method. The type of test given is a written test with three word problems in the form of material descriptions on integer arithmetic operations. Based on the results of the analysis, it was found that the mistakes that students often make in solving word problems on integer arithmetic operations are transformation errors (transformation), process skill error (process skill), and errors in writing the final answer (encoding).

Abstract

Information processing theory is a theory that can explain students' thinking processes in problem-solving. Effective problem-solving requires a good thinking process. Thus, exploring students' thinking processes will help in understanding the causes of students' mistakes so that they can be prevented and enhance students' problem-solving eventually. In line with that, this research aims to analyze students' thinking processes in solving powers and root forms problem (in mathematics) based on information processing theory. This case method research with a qualitative approach was carried out at SMP Laboratorium Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) involving two subjects. The findings show that for both student who answer correctly and student who answer incorrectly, the thinking process begins with the entry of stimuli into sensory memory which is then selected through selective attention to obtain perception. The information is then passed to short-term memory. The difference in their thinking processes lies in the retrieval process. The student who answered correctly succeeded in solving the problem correctly even though he experienced a forgotten lost while the student who answered incorrectly experienced misperceptions caused by a forgotten lost which resulted in the strategy execution and the final answer being incorrect.

Abstract

Quadratic function is important for students to understand because they are useful for everyday life. In reality, most students still face difficulties in solving quadratic function problems. Meanwhile, quadratic function material is needed to understand subsequent material topics such as integrals, derivatives and linear programming. Apart from that, the results of observations on quadratic function material, students do not understand the visualization of quadratic function graphs and students tend to memorize formulas so that when faced with a problem, students forget which formula to use. The application of discovery learning combined with the use of GeoGebra has the potential to stimulate student understanding so that it has a positive effect on learning outcomes. Therefore, the aim of this research is to implementation discovery learning model assisted by GeoGebra to find out actions that can improve learning outcomes. This research uses Classroom Action Research (PTK) guided by the Mc. Taggart and Kemmis design with research stages which include planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects in this research consisted of 35 students from class X-K MAN 1 Trenggalek. Data is obtained by observing and administering tests at the end of each cycle. The research results reported that the average value of student learning outcomes after participating in Cycle I learning activities was 67.13 and 74.64 after participating in Cycle II learning activities. Apart from that, the results obtained in Cycle I of student learning completion were 65.71% and in Cycle II it was 77.14%. Student learning outcomes on the topic of quadratic functions can be improved through learning that applies discovery learning assisted by GeoGebra.

Abstract

Justification is done to strengthen statements or refute false statements. Students' ability to make justifications is important in solving story problems because it can ensure the correctness or incorrectness of students' answers. However, currently, there are still many students who have difficulty in justifying number pattern story problems. In fact, number patterns are very important for students to master. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the justification ability of students with diverger learning styles in solving number pattern story problem. This research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The subjects were selected using a purposive sampling technique so that two students with diverger learning styles were obtained. The research took place at SMPN 1 Plosoklaten. The research instruments consisted of learning-style questionnaires, justification task sheets, and interview guidelines. The results showed that the level of ability of students with diverger learning styles in making justification in solving number pattern story problems is at the deductive justification level. Students give reasons for the solution steps that have been made. In addition, students explain each stage of solving story problems with reasons that are in accordance with student knowledge.

Abstract

Mathematical reasoning can be influential in understanding learning materials. However, students’ mathematical reasoning skills are in the low category, especially in geometric transformation materials. This is due to the lack of learning media used by teachers. Therefore, this study aims to determine the process and result of developing mobile learning that is valid, practical, and effective. This research method is Research and Development (R&D) with the ADDIE development model consisting of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The research began with observations and interviews followed by making a design in the form of storyboard. Mobile learning was constructed using Articulate Storyline 3 application integrated with TeacherMade App, GeoGebra, and Wordwall then implemented in learning. Evaluation was conducted at each stage to make improvements to the mobile learning. The participants of study involved 21 students of class VIII-C SMP Laboratorium UM as well as lecturers and teachers as validators. The instruments used were validation sheet, mathematical reasoning rubric, response questionnaire, and test questions. The result showed that mobile learning developed was valid with an average validity score for media of 3.53, material 3.35, technology of 3.66, and language of 3.25. Practicality test result based on student response questionnaires obtained an average score of 3.2 which indicates that mobile learning is practical, useful, and effective. The test results showed that 80.95% of students achieved more than KKTP based on mathematical reasoning with an average score of 80.24 so that mobile learning met the effectiveness criteria.
