Abstract

The differential impacts of high stakes testing (HST) on curriculum, pedagogy, students learning, teacher professional development, and equity have been known in the literature, but its cancellation impact is not yet known. Situated in the post cancellation policy in Indonesian education system, this study seeks to explore the impacts of such policy change on schools, teacher pedagogical practices, and students’ English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning. A multiple case study design was employed in three different high schools involving 3 school leaders, 3 English teachers, and 9 students in semi-structured and group interviews. Their voices were thematically analysed and constantly compared across cases. The results demonstrate shifts on: (i) the individual student’s and school’s reorientation towards their own vision and mission, (ii) curriculum driven and more varied EFL instructional practices, and (iii) more self-regulated learning activities among certain teachers and students. Further and wider scale investigation is required to look deeper on how these shifts occur among larger groups of stakeholders.

Abstract

Along with the rise of the impact of globalization 4.0 that blurs the boundaries between countries and competition at the world level, many indigenous cultures have been pushed aside. Many families consider other cultures to be more advanced and educate children in contemporary culture that does not reflect their cultural identity. Efforts to preserve the nation's original culture need to be carried out from the family level. This quantitative study was aimed at determining factors influencing children's language development and the role of the family and the challenges in the effort of preserving Javanese culture, values, and languages in the globalization 4.0 era. The population of the study was the family whose kid around 3-12 years old domicile in Central Java and Yogyakarta. In total 94 samples were chosen using a random purposive  method.    The data were gathered  using  questionnaires  then analyzed  using  a descriptive quantitative  method.  The result  of the study  shows  that  family  roles  impact children's acquisition of Javanese. Environment, language level or social strata in language, media, and parental inability are the most common reasons why Javanese is considered difficult. This article also suggests solutions and gives other related data to support this study

Abstract

The development and formulation of English language learning materials, meticulously tailored to encompass the cognitive processes of both the left and right brain hemispheres, emerge as a matter of profound import in the realm of promoting efficacious language acquisition among Junior High School students. In light of this imperative, the present research endeavors to construct and design English instructional materials with a distinct focus on seventh-grade learners within the Junior High School milieu, with an overarching objective of optimizing left- and right-brain accommodation. The research methodology employed is Research and Development (R&D). The procedural trajectory encompassed writing a syllabus, designing the materials, doing material evaluation, and revising the material draft. In the context of data collection, a twofold approach was undertaken, featuring targeted questionnaires designed to elicit data pertaining to both the students' instructional requisites and their perceived learning needs. This validation is derived from a tripartite evaluation, encompassing data analysis, expert assessment, and student feedback. Expert judgment, indicative of the materials' categorization as falling within the "good" bracket, substantiates the meticulous development process, with an average score of 3.8. Likewise, the evaluation, reflected in an average score of 3.13, corroborates the materials' efficacy in cultivating a conducive learning environment. In summation, this study epitomizes a deliberate and comprehensive endeavor to forge English instructional materials that transcend conventional paradigms by cognizantly accommodating the cognitive dimensions of learners' brains. The harmonious fusion of pedagogical design and cognitive insight, as evinced in the development and evaluation process, advocates for a dynamic shift in instructional material construction to better align with the multifaceted cognitive attributes of students in Junior High Schools.

The study investigates the factors influencing English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students' motivation at Kampung Inggris Jogja, a non-formal education center. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with eight intermediate-level students. The analysis revealed that both intrinsic factors (interest, needs, hobbies, goals) and extrinsic factors (teachers, parents, environment) significantly affect students' motivation. The findings indicate that students are highly motivated, with a slight dominance of intrinsic motivation. The study concludes that both intrinsic and extrinsic factors are crucial in EFL learning at Kampung Inggris Jogja.

Abstract

This study focuses on non-certified English teachers using Information and Communication Technology (UICT) in the teaching practice with the framework is technological pedagogical and content knowledge (TPACK). The purpose is to elaborate on the interrelationship between all TPACK components and their roles in predicting UICT based on the beliefs of the teachers during teaching practice. The researchers used a mixed-methods design for 20 participants from SMP IT Nur Syamzam Kolaka. Questionnaire and interview, especially semi-structured interviews as an instrument for this study. To collect the data, the researcher did online with the non-certified English teachers at SMP IT Nur Syamzam Kolaka. Using Pearson's correlation coefficient, the relationship between the application of TPACK and the availability of ICT tools was determined by correlating the overall TPACK result with the adequacy of ICT tools. Therefore, the findings of the study that were obtained through the TPACK survey demonstrate how they effectively apply their knowledge. The teachers demonstrate expert knowledge in all TPACK domains. They demonstrate the highest level of knowledge based on the mean of TK (4.28), followed by CK (4.26). While all areas of TPACK have a mean of 4.10, PCK and TPK have the lowest mean (4.11).

Abstract

This study examines students’ attitudes toward the Learning Management System (hereafter LMS) CANVAS in the Virtual Learning Environment (henceforth VLE). This study used mixed methods in nature, which used a survey to collect data on the attitudes of 118 EFL students who enrolled in the Technology Enhanced Language Learning (hereafter TELL) course. Researchers gathered data through a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews to assess students’ attitudes using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The survey results were analyzed using descriptive statistics to investigate the quantitative data, while thematic analysis was used to study the qualitative data obtained from interviews. The survey results were analyzed using descriptive statistics to investigate the quantitative data, while thematic analysis was used to study the qualitative data obtained from interviews. Based on the research findings, the TAM framework identifies two main categories: Perceived Usefulness and Perceived Ease of Use. The Perceive Usefulness category comprises four categories: CANVAS Engagement Time, CANVAS Enhances Interaction, Learning Efficacy, and Effective Communication, CANVAS Enhances Language Learning, and CANVAS Boosting Students’ Confidence and Motivation in a Fun Way. In addition, the Perceive Ease of Use category comprises three categories: CANVAS Usability in Mobile Learning Environments, CANVAS User-Friendly Design, and CANVAS Seamless Navigation and Accessibility.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the struggle of sexual harassment victims depicted in the film entitled Penyalin Cahaya. This study uses Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis (CDA) model and the Outrage Management model (Scott & Martin, 2006) to examine the verbal and visual aspects of the film. The dimensions that are analyzed include the text, the discourse practice, and sociocultural practice. The key dialogues and scenes are extracted by selecting and retrieving excerpt of dialogues and scenes which depict conflict and power imbalances between the victims and the perpetrators. The results show that power imbalance and its manifestation between them can be found by observing the dialogue and the scenes. It demonstrates that there are several ways through which the abusers exercise their power over the victims. It also highlights the attempts by the victims to fight against sexual harassment, which is often ignored. Furthermore, the sociocultural state of Indonesian society, especially regarding patriarchal culture and power struggles over women, became the main driver that led to the production of this film. The significance of this study is that it can provide insight into the positions, emotions, and obstacles faced by sexual harassment victims in Indonesia, as depicted in the film.
