Abstract

English learning outcomes in vocational education must align with enacted curriculum policies and the specific needs of vocational students. In Indonesia, the Merdeka Curriculum (Freedom to Learn Curriculum) 2022 sets national educational standards, including English language policies. This study examines the alignment between these policies and the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) approach, which is essential for vocational students preparing for future professions. This qualitative study employs Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to analyze pedagogical discourse at the policy level. Content analysis of government documents on English learning outcomes was conducted, alongside interviews with teachers and students to gather practical insights. Findings indicate that while the Merdeka Curriculum provides general learning outcomes, vocational educators must adapt these to meet students' specific needs. Teachers play a crucial role in integrating relevant themes, practical assignments, and industry-related activities into English instruction. However, challenges remain in effectively implementing ESP due to curriculum constraints and a lack of contextualized materials. The study highlights the need for flexibility in curriculum implementation, emphasizing a balance between national policies and vocational students' professional requirements. Teachers require support in curriculum adaptation to enhance pedagogical strategies and ensure meaningful learning experiences. This research provides critical insights into the impact of policy changes on English learning in vocational schools. It underscores the importance of contextualized instruction and suggests improvements in policy implementation to better serve vocational students’ career aspirations.

Abstract

This study examines the strategy of local language retention based on local wisdom with an interdisciplinary approach, namely anthropology and Linguistics. The phenomenon of language shift that occurs in various regions in Indonesia is a serious threat to the continuity of regional languages as cultural identities. Globalization, urbanization, and the development of Information Technology also accelerate the process of language assimilation, thereby reducing the use of local languages, especially among the younger generation. Through a qualitative ethnographic approach, this study describes in depth how the practice of language inheritance takes place in the family, community, education, and media environment. Data were obtained through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with community leaders, parents, children, and schools, as well as documentation of language interactions in everyday life. The results showed that the sustainability of the local language is strongly influenced by the active role of the family, community support, integration in the school curriculum, as well as the use of digital media for documentation and dissemination of language. This study emphasizes the importance of cross-generational engagement in preserving local languages, as well as the need for cultural policies that support the revitalization of regional languages through a culture-based and participatory approach. Thus, the preservation of the local language is not only a linguistic effort, but also as part of the preservation of the nation's cultural identity.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate vocational school learners' perspectives on the cybergogy approach for an enhanced English language instruction. Utilizing a quantitative research design, the study surveyed 619 students across 17 vocational schools in Yogyakarta Province. The results indicate that the majority of learners find the cybergogy approach engaging and effective, particularly due to its interactive nature and the flexibility it offers. Learners appreciated the ability to access learning resources at their own pace, which is crucial given their varying schedules. However, the study also highlights challenges, including the reliance on consistent access to quality techno-logy, which may limit the approach's effectiveness for some students. The findings underscore the importance of integrating multimedia resources and fostering peer collaboration to enhance English language instruction. The study concludes that while the cybergogy approach shows promise in improving language skills and learner engagement, its implementation must be carefully managed to address technological disparities among students.

Abstract

Making ecoprints to improve skills in using natural materials in learning arts and culture and crafts for elementary school children in Kalijambe, Sragen. Making this ecoprint means that the motifs produced on each fabric have different colors and patterns even though they use the same type of plant leaves. This is due to several factors, the relatively different shapes of the leaves. The introduction of ecoprinting to elementary school children creates a creative experience in learning arts and culture and crafts. Another contribution that can be achieved from this training is the growth of students' awareness of the potential of the environment and the desire to preserve nature. Ecoprint work training also provides real and meaningful learning experiences. Exploring the variety of natural materials around, especially leaves, adds value to aesthetic sensitivity. Apart from that, ecoprints also have quite a lot of selling value.

Abstract

Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into education has transformed traditional approaches to teaching and learning, particularly in academic writing instruction. This study investigates the pedagogical impact of using QuillBot, an AI-based paraphrasing tool, on students' academic writing performance and their perceptions of its use. Motivated by the increasing complexity of academic writing and the need for instructional innovation, this mixed-methods research examines learning outcomes and student experiences. Forty-fourth-semester students, consisting of 13 male and 27 female students, enrolled in an Academic Writing course, participated in the study. An explanatory sequential design was employed, starting with pre- and post-tests measuring writing performance, followed by semi-structured interviews to explore students' reflections. The results revealed a significant improvement in students' writing scores, with the mean increasing from 49.25 (pre-test) to 74.00 (post-test), indicating enhanced ability in paraphrasing and producing coherent academic texts. Students also reported that QuillBot helped them internalize academic language structures, improved their awareness of sentence patterns, and supported autonomous learning by providing immediate, accessible feedback. Moreover, they acknowledged the importance of ethical usage and viewed the tool as a guide rather than a shortcut. These insights highlight the dual role of AI tools as both linguistic support systems and pedagogical aids when thoughtfully integrated into instruction. Future research should consider broader and more diverse populations to deepen understanding of how AI-assisted writing tools shape student learning across different educational contexts. Keywords: Academic writing, Paraphrasing, Artificial intelligence, Quillbot

Abstract

The translation of Indonesian idiomatic expressions into English using Neural Machine Translation (NMT) systems presents significant challenges due to the intricate nature of idiomatic language. Idioms are culturally embedded constructs conveying meanings different from their literal interpretations. This study explores the effectiveness of NMT systems in capturing and translating Indonesian idiomatic expressions into English. Using a qualitative approach, 150 diverse Indonesian idioms were evaluated through Google Translate and DeepL. Each idiom was assessed for semantic accuracy, syntactic coherence, and contextual fidelity. Qualitative analysis provided a comprehensive evaluation of translation quality. Findings reveal significant challenges for NMT systems in translating idiomatic expressions. Both Google Translate and DeepL show strengths in some areas, but also have limitations. While they generally capture literal meanings, they often miss metaphorical nuances and cultural connotations. Syntactic errors such as incorrect word order and tense inconsistencies are common, especially in complex idioms. In addition, contextual fidelity analysis shows that NMT systems struggle with contextual appropriateness and pragmatic usage, resulting in translations lacking cultural sensitivity and relevance. These challenges highlight the need for improved algorithms to better interpret and translate idiomatic language across cultural contexts. Accurate idiom translation is crucial for language learners to understand cultural nuances and idiomatic usage. Enhancing the capabilities of NMT systems requires refining algorithms, developing context-aware models, and expanding training datasets with diverse idiomatic expressions. Overcoming these challenges will advance machine translation capabilities and improve cross-cultural communication and language learning experiences.
