Abstract

This community service program was initiated to address challenges faced by vocational high school teachers in Yogyakarta. The primary issue is the lack of teacher preparedness to implement differentiated learning models in English lessons. Teachers often lack confidence in their ability to design engaging and relevant learning scenarios for students with diverse characteristics. Additionally, there is a tendency among teachers to assess student skills and readiness uniformly, leading to suboptimal delivery of varied activities, materials, and resources that cater to individual learning styles and preferences. To address these challenges, a workshop was organized to enhance teachers' understanding and skills in differentiated English learning. The workshop aimed at improving the pedagogical competence of vocational high school English teachers in Yogyakarta was conducted between May and June 2024, both online and offline. The program included practical experience-sharing sessions, offline workshops, and online mentoring to review teaching modules created by 49 vocational high school teachers. These modules were based on differentiated learning principles tailored to vocational education. The teachers provided positive feedback on the workshop, indicating that they found the facilities and presentation of the material highly beneficial. The success of this workshop, centered on differentiated learning, underscores its impact on enhancing the pedagogical skills of vocational high school English teachers.

Abstract

This paper began with concerns about the lacks of sharp rhetorical styles in writing, the methods of citing references, and the formulations of theories and arguments within the conceptual framework in thesis reports written by students of the English Language Education Department. The study was carried out to explain the rhetorical styles of students’ theoretical framework in their thesis report, to reveal weaknesses or the lack of strong arguments in conveying ideas in a straightforward and structured manner, and to suggest actions to prevent the problem form reoccurring in the future. The data were collected from the final project manuscripts written by students of the English Education Study Program, totaling 110 works. The analysis followed the stages of data collection, data display, data reduction and drawing conclusions. The general results of the research showed that the students did not include too many elements of critical thinking in their thesis literature review. In general, they used attribution quite excessively (78%), followed by elements of establishing links between sources (15%), and comparing their own findings or interpretations with other sources 4%. Meanwhile, the elements of application, evaluation, and statement of use had the smallest portion, each 1%. Problems found in the sample were listed based on the comparison between the data and the standard commonly used to regulate the procedure of writing a scientific paper. Recommendations were then formulated which can be used as guidelines for final project writers or any other parties related to writing scientific papers in general; they are training students of the importance of using all rhetorical styles in their citation when preparing a strong conceptual framework.

Abstract

This study investigated the needs of high school students in Yogyakarta regarding multilingualism-based English language learning. A quantitative research design was employed, involving a questionnaire survey of 1215 students. Data analysis revealed that students expressed a strong preference for a multilingual approach, highlighting the need for integrating Indonesian and/or local languages into English language instruction. Students perceived that this approach could alleviate language anxiety, enhance motivation, and improve both receptive and productive language skills. These findings align with previous research, which suggests that multilingualism can create more inclusive and effective learning environments. The study underscores the importance of incorporating diverse linguistic resources to optimize English language learning outcomes.

Abstract

The translation of Indonesian idiomatic expressions into English using Neural Machine Translation (NMT) systems presents significant challenges due to the intricate nature of idiomatic language. Idioms are culturally embedded constructs conveying meanings different from their literal interpretations. This study explores the effectiveness of NMT systems in capturing and translating Indonesian idiomatic expressions into English. Using a qualitative approach, 150 diverse Indonesian idioms were evaluated through Google Translate and DeepL. Each idiom was assessed for semantic accuracy, syntactic coherence, and contextual fidelity. Qualitative analysis provided a comprehensive evaluation of translation quality. Findings reveal significant challenges for NMT systems in translating idiomatic expressions. Both Google Translate and DeepL show strengths in some areas, but also have limitations. While they generally capture literal meanings, they often miss metaphorical nuances and cultural connotations. Syntactic errors such as incorrect word order and tense inconsistencies are common, especially in complex idioms. In addition, contextual fidelity analysis shows that NMT systems struggle with contextual appropriateness and pragmatic usage, resulting in translations lacking cultural sensitivity and relevance. These challenges highlight the need for improved algorithms to better interpret and translate idiomatic language across cultural contexts. Accurate idiom translation is crucial for language learners to understand cultural nuances and idiomatic usage. Enhancing the capabilities of NMT systems requires refining algorithms, developing context-aware models, and expanding training datasets with diverse idiomatic expressions. Overcoming these challenges will advance machine translation capabilities and improve cross-cultural communication and language learning experiences.

Abstract

When teaching English in a multicultural setting, culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) becomes even more important. It promotes diversity by recognizing the impact of students' different backgrounds and experiences on their identities. Teachers can increase student engagement, foster critical thinking, and improve language acquisition by incorporating culturally relevant materials and teaching strategies. This method respects students' cultural backgrounds and enhances their ability to understand and empathize with individuals from diverse backgrounds. The purposes of this mixed-method study with an explanatory design were to 1) find out what English language teachers think are the most important aspects of CRP and 2) find out how they use CRP to keep students interested. The participants (N = 95) are majoring in English from elementary, secondary, and higher education levels. The researchers used an online questionnaire and a semi-structured interview to gather the data from respondents. The researchers analyzed the questionnaire using the adjectival rating of a four-point Likert Scale and analyzed the interview using the verbatim technique. The findings revealed that the dominant key characteristics of CRP were care and empathy. Therefore, the interview results indicated that practicing CRP successfully boosted student engagement since their involvement and motivation appeared as well since teachers were 1) using relevant contexts and examples, 2) incorporating multicultural perspectives, 3) encouraging student-driven material selection, and 4) making personalization of content.

Abstract

The problem underlying this study is the low level of English proficiency among students, while the importance of technology in education is increasingly recognized. To overcome this, the study implements a Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach by using WhatsApp features such as voice messages and video calls as media to encourage students to practice speaking. The purpose of this action is to provide opportunities for students to develop their speaking proficiency. This research was conducted through three cycles of action involving the planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. Data were collected through pre-tests, observations during cycles one, two, and three, and interviews with students. Data analysis focused on measuring the increase in speaking fluency, reduction in pronunciation errors, decrease in the frequency of pauses, and increase in students' confidence levels, as part of the reflection process in each cycle. The results of the action cycles showed a significant increase in students' speaking fluency. In the first cycle, many students reached 81-90 words per minute, while in the second cycle, the speaking rate increased to 91-100 words per minute. Some students even reached 100-110 words per minute in the third cycle. The frequency of pronunciation errors decreased consistently, and no students showed an increase in the number of errors after the actions in each cycle. The decrease in the frequency of pauses during speaking also indicated an increase in students' fluency and confidence. Overall, the reflections from these CAR cycles indicate that the use of the WhatsApp features is contributes in increasing speaking fluency, reducing pronunciation errors, decreasing the frequency of pauses, and increasing students' confidence in speaking English. However, further action cycles are needed to continue to support students who are still at a low level of fluency and help more students achieve the expected standard.
