Abstract

This study aims to identify publication trends and recommendations for problem-based science learning research in elementary schools. We used a mixed-methods research design in which descriptive, qualitative, and bibliometric analyses were used to look at the data. We selected the sample by using the purposive sampling technique. Secondary data contains Sinta-indexed research articles published in the Google Scholar database. Data were analyzed using content analysis and the VOS-Viewer. The results of the analysis show that between 2017 and 2021, 98 articles have been published with the keywords [problem-based learning] and [IPA or science learning] in national and international journals with research settings in Indonesia. Most publications occurred in 2020. The keywords that appear the most in the published articles obtained are [problem-based learning], [learning outcomes], [critical thinking skills], and [science learning]. The keyword [Tri Hita Karana], or three causes of well-being, appears, but with weak nodes. These keywords appear in many publications whose research settings are in Bali because they are ethnoscientific findings from that area. Weak nodes have several conjectures, namely that this theme has been researched to saturate or that research on this theme is still rarely carried out. This research contributes ideas for future research involving the theme of problem-based learning in science.

Abstract

Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) are essential variables that support the achievement of science learning objectives. However, distance learning during the Covid-19 Pandemic was the cause of the lack of maximum HOTS for undergraduate science students due to their lack of involvement in experiments. Therefore, this study aims to apply a metacognition-integrated science virtual experiment model and examine its impact on students' HOTS science. A quasi-experiment was involved with a randomized pretest-posttest comparison group design to see the impact of the implementation of this model. Participants in the two treatment groups were randomly selected from two private universities in Indonesia. The HOTS of participants were assessed using multiple-choice questions. Observation sheets were used to measure the implementation of the learning model being developed. A general linear model with MANOVA was used to test the effect of the model, while Partial Eta Squared was used to measure the effect size of the model on HOTS. The results showed that the virtual science experimental model integrated with metacognition strategies significantly affected students' HOTS. The effect size measurement shows a high effect in the experimental group. Researchers recommend that universities apply a similar model to encourage students' achievement of HOTS.

Abstract

Differentiated instruction facilitates learning based on students’ unique interests, preparedness for learning, and learning profiles. Many teachers lack a comprehensive understanding of differentiated instruction, particularly in kindergarten. Teachers used to employ Student Worksheets to facilitate learning. This study aims to: (1) the implementation of differentiated instruction at an Indonesian private kindergarten, (2) the factors that facilitate the instruction’s implementation, and (3) the efforts to deal with any challenges encountered during the implementation of the instruction. This study employed a qualitative case study design to capture a phenomenon comprehensively and contextually by gathering data directly from the subject under investigation. The study was executed at Aisyiyah Kindergarten, Sukorejo, Indonesia. It is the only Indonesian kindergarten in Sukorejo that incorporates an independent curriculum called Sekolah Penggerak. Teachers implement holistic-integrative learning design to differentiate instructional activities. Learning media containing STEAM Loose parts were utilized to determine various factors that may facilitate or impede the instruction. Factors that facilitate instruction include the learning environment, media utilization, teachers’ creativity, the student-teacher relationship, the implementation of teaching techniques, students’ psychological well-being, and community support beyond the school setting. The inhibitory factors encompass a scarcity of learning resources, students’ lack of preparedness for learning, a shortage of teachers, and inadequate infrastructure. This study revealed that the school tried to address the challenges by collaborating with the community inside and outside the school, such as with student guardians, the foundation administrator, and related agencies

Abstract

Comprehension is a person's ability to understand something and interpret concepts that have been known or obtained previously. Google Classroom is a learning application created by Google to help educators and students do distance learning. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of google classroom in improving students' understanding of science learning at SD Muhammadiyah MBS Prambanan. The research method used was quasy experimental with a pretest-posttest only control group research design. Sampling was done by saturated sampling technique. The first sample is all students of class IV C totaling 16 students as the control class, and the second sample is all students of class IV D totaling 16 students as the experimental class. The results of the analysis show that there is no significant difference to online learning using google classroom with direct learning (conventional). This is shown from the results of the independent sample test where the sig. (2-tailed) 0.121> 0.05, which means that Ho is accepted and H1 is rejected. Whereas in the paired sample test, the sig value was obtained. (2-tailed) of 0,000 then H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted, which means that there is a mean difference between the pretest and posttest in the experimental class and the control class. Based on these results it can be concluded that google classroom is effective in improving students' understanding of science learning at SD Muhammadiyah MBS Prambanan.
