Abstract

The escalating global biodiversity crisis underscores the critical need for effective educational strategies that promote environmental awareness and competencies. This research and development study addresses this imperative by designing and evaluating "BioDiv Web," an innovative e-learning platform for biodiversity education. The platform synergistically integrates the Structured Project-Based Learning (SPjBL) model with a Citizen Science Project (CSP) approach to create an authentic and scaffolded learning environment. Developed using the Lee and Owens model, the product was validated by experts and deemed highly valid (e.g., material validation: 100%) and practical (average score: 92%) based on trials with students. A quasi-experimental study involving 70 tenth-grade students was conducted to assess its effectiveness. The experimental group exhibited significantly higher learning gains compared to the control group. The results demonstrated moderate effectiveness, with normalized gain scores of 0.68 for critical thinking skills and 0.65 for environmental literacy. One-way ANCOVA analysis confirmed that these improvements were statistically significant (p < 0.001). The findings affirm that the BioDiv Web platform is a robust, practical, and effective digital tool for enhancing senior high school students' critical cognitive and affective learning outcomes in biodiversity education.

Abstract

Climate change education is a priority in Indonesia's national curriculum. One challenge in teaching climate change in biology classes is the limited availability of teaching materials that cover various socio-scientific issues. Further development of these teaching materials is needed. This study aimed to develop a Climate Change E-Module based on Socio-Scientific Issues Teaching and Learning (SSI-TL) and test its validity and practicality in the learning process. This Research and Development (R&D) study used the Lee & Owens model, which focuses on developing multimedia-based learning designs. The e-module was created using Google Sites. Subject matter experts, media experts, and biology education practitioners assessed the e-module's validity. Practicality was assessed based on student responses through one-to-one trials, small group trials, and field trials. The validity test results showed the e-module to be highly valid, with percentages of 93% from a subject matter expert, 94% from a media expert, and 96% from a biology education practitioner. Practicality test results showed a highly practical category, with percentages of 87% for the one-to-one trial, 92% for the small group trial, and 93% for the field trial. Thus, the Climate Change E-Module based on SSI-TL is valid and practical for use in biology education.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the importance of critical thinking skills in improving the quality of student learning outcomes, especially in an era of increasingly complex scientific and technological developments. Critical thinking skills are essential skills that influence the ability to understand information, solve problems, and make logical decisions. However, the actual conditions in Indonesia show that these skills are still relatively low, so it is necessary to examine the relationship between critical thinking skills and cognitive learning outcomes. This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational research design, involving 108 tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 02 Batu in the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected through a critical reasoning skills test covering four indicators and a cognitive learning outcomes test based on Bloom's taxonomy (C1–C6). Data analysis used Pearson's correlation test and simple linear regression with the help of the SPSS 23 program. The results showed that students' critical reasoning skills were in the good category with an average score of 82.9, while cognitive learning outcomes were in the moderate category with an average score of 84.2. Pearson correlation test produced a value of r = 0.995 with a significance of < 0.001, indicating a very strong positive relationship between critical reasoning skills and cognitive learning outcomes. These findings confirm that improving critical reasoning skills contributes significantly to improving student learning outcomes. Therefore, the development of learning model that can stimulate critical thinking skills needs to be a concern in efforts to improve the quality of education.

Abstract

Communication skills are one of the essential 21st-century competencies for students because they play an important role in conveying ideas, understanding learning materials, and building cooperation and exchanging ideas during the learning process. This ability is closely related to the achievement of optimal cognitive learning outcomes. This study is a quantitative study using a survey method conducted in September–October 2025 at SMAN 2 Batu. The study population was grade X students, with a sample of 107 students selected using purposive sampling. The communication skills instrument used a questionnaire containing 10 statements adapted from Greenstein (2012), while cognitive learning outcomes were measured using a multiple-choice test consisting of 10 questions based on Anderson and Krathwohl's (2001) revised Bloom's taxonomy, covering six dimensions: remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating. Data analysis was performed using Pearson's correlation test and simple linear regression using SPSS 23. The results showed that students' communication skills were in the high category with an average score of 36.94, while cognitive learning outcomes were in the moderate category with an average of 6.29. The Pearson correlation test produced a value of r = 0.883 with a significance of < 0.001, indicating a positive and very strong relationship. A positive correlation coefficient value indicates that the higher the communication skills of students, the higher their cognitive learning outcomes. Thus, communication skills are an important ability that contributes to improving the cognitive learning outcomes of students.

Abstract

Background: The State University of Malang has substantial potential for solid waste generation due to the high density of academic activities. Although general estimates of waste volume are available, detailed data on waste characteristics and composition within campus facilities remain limited. This study aims to quantify waste generation at the food courts of the A19 and A20 Joint Lecture Buildings, evaluate existing waste management practices, and assess the potential for recyclable waste utilization. Methodology: A quantitative descriptive approach was applied. Waste generation measurements were conducted in accordance with the Indonesian National Standard SNI 19-3964-1994 by analyzing waste production and composition over eight consecutive days. Average waste generation per seat, waste volume, and specific gravity were calculated, and waste materials were classified based on their characteristics and sources. Findings: The results indicate daily variations in waste generation, with average rates of 0.14 kg/seat/day at Food Court A19 and 0.07 kg/seat/day at Food Court A20. The dominant waste fractions were paper, plastic, and food waste, reflecting consumption patterns within the study area. Variations in waste volume were associated with fluctuations in academic activities and food service operations. Organic waste shows potential for eco-enzyme production and takakura composting, while paper and plastic waste may be managed through structured collection programs. Contribution:  This study provides site-specific empirical data on waste generation rates and composition within a higher education campus, supporting data-driven improvements in campus-scale waste management strategies

Abstract

The enhancement of students’ sustainability competencies remains a critical challenge in higher education. While project-based learning approaches have been effective in improving students’ problem-solving and collaboration abilities, their capacity to address complex environmental and sustainability issues is still limited. To overcome these limitations, this study developed and validated a Project-Based Environmental Education (PjBEE) model that integrates project-based learning with sustainability-oriented education. Employing a Research and Development (R&D), this study aimed to determine the model’s validity, practicality, and effectiveness in enhancing students’ sustainability competencies. The PjBEE model was implemented in environmental education courses and structured around six stages: Inquiring, Collaborating, Decision Making, Digital Action Planning, Creating Artifacts, and Action. Research instruments included expert validation sheets, observation sheets, student response questionnaires, and sustainability competency tests. The validation results confirmed that the PjBEE model met the criteria of high validity, feasibility, and practicality. Implementation findings demonstrated positive student engagement and significant improvement in sustainability competencies particularly in systems thinking, collaboration, strategic planning, and problem-solving. Therefore, the PjBEE model can serve as a pedagogically sound and empirically supported framework for integrating sustainability education into higher education curricula, particularly in biology teacher education programs.

Abstract

Learning ecosystem material can be taught in line with efforts to realize the Sustainable Development Goals, one of which is the point of Life on Land. Learning media plays a crucial role in facilitating effective learning and offers advantages, especially in terms of flexibility and interactivity. This development aims to produce a website-assisted learning product, the Eco-Explorer Game, which is effective in improving the dimensions of mutual cooperation and cognitive learning outcomes. The development process follows the Lee & Owens model, which consists of five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. In the implementation stage, this study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest technique, with a sample consisting of 36 tenth-grade students at SMAN 1 Singosari. Quantitative data were collected through two main instruments: pretest and posttest scores to measure cognitive learning outcomes, and observation sheets equipped with a quantitative assessment rubric to measure the dimensions of mutual cooperation (collaboration, caring, and sharing). The data analysis technique to measure the improvement of both variables used the N-Gain test. The collected data shows that the game is proven to be effective in improving the dimensions of mutual cooperation and students' cognitive learning outcomes as indicated by the increase in the average achievement results of each indicator both in the dimensions of mutual cooperation (from the initial 56.1 to 88.7) and also cognitive learning outcomes (from the initial 66.8 to 87.7). The N-Gain score obtained from the observation sheet for the dimensions of mutual cooperation shows a high score of 0.7. Furthermore, cognitive learning outcomes show an N-Gain score of 0.62, which is included in the moderate category. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the Eco-Explorer Game is very effective in improving the dimensions of mutual cooperation of students and is quite effective in improving their cognitive learning outcomes.
