Abstract

This short paper introduces ‘Studies in Learning and Teaching’ (SiLeT) as a new journal. As an international peer-reviewed journal, SiLeT aware of the quality of the content. The rational, the purpose, and the scope are illustrated as the opening speech of the journal. Since the number of learning and teaching journals is still lacking in accommodating the ideas of researchers and scholars in the world especially in the domain of education, therefore, the existence of SiLeT will fill the void of scientific discussion, especially in terms of “learning, teaching, curriculum development, learning environments, teacher education, educational technology, educational developments, measurement and evaluation, educational statistics, books review of education and other learning-teaching issues”.

Abstract

This qualitative research was motivated by our experiences while being an international student in Taiwan. We met with four Indonesian students who move to Taiwan because of their parents are postgraduate students. They were four elementary students who were studying in a primary school in Hualien County as a research participant. They have been in Taiwan for around six months. Through an in-depth interview and documentation study, we captured their experiences during a Chinese class. Finally, we got three main themes that impress us: “I don’t want to be a loser! (First Impression)”; “I prefer she use body language than English (Learning Process and Teacher)”; and “If I don’t know him/her I will ask payment for me (Motivation in Chinese)”.

Abstract

The Lawson Classroom Test of Scientific Reasoning (LCTSR) is a popular instrument that measures the development of students’ scientific reasoning skills. Through large-scale applications, several issues have been observed in terms of validity, scoring, and the way of interpretation. This study aims to identify the contribution and describe the research profile of applying LCTSR in education during the last ten years. The method used in this research is a bibliometric analysis based on Scopus data with the help of Biblioshiny and VOSviewer. The study obtained 43 documents related to LCTSR. The results showed that the use of LCTSR every year has increased and decreased in the last ten years. Journals and proceedings in the field of physics dominate the publication sources for LCTSR research. Furthermore, Bao, Koenig, and Xiao were the three most prolific authors and also had research collaborations. The dominant country for publication is the United States. The area most often associated with LCTSR research is social science, whose purpose is to measure the development of student’s cognitive abilities. The scope of this research analysis is limited to certain databases or languages, so this study recommends finding renewed discussions about the use of LCTSR in education over a longer period.

Abstract

Students frequently encounter alternative conceptions regarding physics, both before and after studying physics concepts. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the PODEW (Predict, Observe, Discuss, Explain, Write) strategy integrated with analogy-based learning in addressing these misconceptions. A mixed-method explanatory model was employed, involving both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative data were collected through pretests and posttests and analyzed using ANCOVA, N-Gain calculations, and effect size measurements. Qualitative data were obtained via interviews with selected students to provide further insights into the findings. The study involved 60 high school students from State Senior High School of Pandewu 1, with Grade 10 Science-1 (experimental group) utilizing the PODEW strategy with analogy and Grade 10 Science-2 (control group) employing the PODEW strategy without analogy. Results indicated a significant difference between the two groups, with the experimental group achieving an N-Gain score of 0.64 compared to 0.48 in the control group, indicating greater improvement in addressing alternative conceptions. Despite these improvements, some students in the experimental group shifted from scientific understanding to alternative conceptions, suggesting the need for further refinement of the strategy. Overall, the findings highlight the potential of the PODEW strategy with analogy in reducing misconceptions and improving students' conceptual understanding of Newton's Laws.

Abstract

This research aims to examine junior high school students' problem-solving abilities on the topic of temperature and heat. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, involving 20 seventh-grade students from SMP Negeri 1 Ngoro during the 2024/2025 academic year. The instrument used was an essay test, with problem-solving indicators based on Polya’s stages: understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and reviewing the solution. The findings revealed that students’ performance across these four stages remained relatively low. Most students tended to bypass crucial steps and proceeded directly to the solution without proper planning. Only a few were able to follow the entire process coherently and accurately. These results are consistent with previous studies, highlighting that students’ problem-solving skills vary significantly depending on their ability level. Therefore, more contextual, interactive, and student-centered learning strategies are necessary to enhance critical and scientific thinking skills in problem-solving.
