Abstract

The transformation of the agricultural value chain on the production side is illustrated by the increased engagement of small-scale farmers facilitated by agribusiness firms through contract farming agreements. It is believed that the varied ramifications of contract farming are influenced not solely by contextual and implementation disparities but also by variations in the attributes of participating farmers. The dataset utilized in this investigation was sourced from the 2014 Indonesian Household Plantation Survey, comprising information from 8816 sugarcane farmers. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis were employed to categorize sugarcane farmers statistically and scrutinize the structure of sugarcane contract farming in Indonesia. Findings unveiled four distinct clusters of sugarcane farmers with discernible and significant dissimilarities in attributes. Contract farming is predominantly characterized by adult farmers with moderately sized self-owned land managed intensively and relatively favorable institutional access. Conversely, non-contract farming consists of adult farmers with small self-owned land working non-intensively and having limited institutional access. Keywords: cluster analysis, contract farming, principal component analysis, sugarcane

Abstract

Background: Sustainability means not only the sustainable use of natural resources but also core values in the areas of human rights (HAM), employment, and inclusive business. Supply chain management performance assessment has a direct influence on sustainability performance. Compliance, monitoring, and auditing have a direct influence on improving performance, minimizing risk, and selecting suppliers to achieve Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM). The research was carried out at the herbal medicine company PT. Sido Muncul Herbal Medicine and Pharmaceutical Industry Tbk.Purpose: This research aims to select indicators, determine priorities for sustainability aspects, and select alternative SSCM performance measuresDesign/methodology/approach: the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method.Findings/Result: The top priority sustainability indicators for each sustainability aspect are net profit, employee training and development, occupational safety and health management systems, partnerships, environmental management systems, ISO 14001 certification, and certified quality management and food safety. By knowing the main indicators and priority aspects of sustainability; a manager can implement relevant and profitable SSCM activities and manage trade-offs between conflicting objectives by ensuring that profitability, environmental sustainability, and social sustainability of society can be implemented effectively, efficiently, and sustainably. Conclusion: As a result, it can be concluded that the implementation of sustainability aspects in SIDO requires models, processes, and practices adapted to planning, production, and control. Sustainability practices are no longer considered complementary but standard business activities, so they need to be integrated. The wider the integration of sustainability into the company's business, the wider the level of integration across the enterprise's operations.Originality/value (State of the art): SCM is a field that is concerned with sustainability performance related to its activities in generating pollution, waste, and environmental footprint. Although there is an increasing conceptual development of SCM practices and has received much attention, previous research has only focused on selecting priority SSCM practices that are most relevant to improving SSCM performance and has not linked sustainability to supply chain drivers and alternative performance measures to improve sustainability performance. In this research was conducted identifying successful supply chain practices in the context of the large corporate culture, has been listed on the Jakarta Stock Exchange, has gone global, and its products are widely used by the public, compliance with government regulations, and international standards by expanding aspects of social sustainability to K3, human resources, community, and product integrity which were not found in previous studies. Abstract

The development of the implementation of non-tariff measure policy, in the world market which has a trend, increased every year. There are seven (7) NTM policies mostly implemented in the international market. The most policy application is the implementation of Technical Barriers to Trade and Sanitary and Phytosanitary. Agricultural commodities both vegetables and live animal products are commodities mostly become subject to NTM policy in the form of SPS (Sanitary and Phytosanitary) and TBT (Technical Barriers on Trade) in the international market. Indonesia as an agricultural country that has advantages in agriculture and fisheries cannot avoid the implementation of SPS and TBT policies. This research was aimed to analyze the effect of SPS and TBT on Indonesia’s shrimp export using the gravity model. The results showed that the GDP of exporters and the exchange rate have negative influences on Indonesia’s shrimp exports. Meanwhile, the GDP of the importers and trade cost have positive influences on the export of shrimp Indonesia. while the SPS policy and TBT don’t affect Indonesia's exports of shrimp in the international market. This indicates that Indonesian shrimp exporters are able to quickly adjust the SPS and TBT policies applied by importing countries.

Abstract

Cocoa replanting with intercrops is a strategy for sustainable cocoa development. Cocoa replanting is expected to impact productivity and production quality and increase selling prices positively. However, there are still many farmers who are reluctant to replant due to concerns about losing sources of income and financing difficulties. The study analyzed the cost and income structure of various replanting models. Based on the survey, there were 88 cocoa farmers as respondents, 51 who replanted and 37 who did not. Through the analysis of cost and income structures, it is known that replanting cocoa can be a rational option for farmers who want to increase their income because replanting can increase the productivity of cacao. In addition, the income from the intercrops has also been shown to replace the income of the cocoa lost at the time of the replanting. Analyzing the partial profit balance shows that bananas and chili are profitable crops to plant as intercrops on cocoa groves when replanting. For farmers who plant bananas as an intercrop, the income from bananas can cover unloading costs, seed costs and cocoa planting costs within one year

Abstract

The decline in natural rubber farmgate prices in recent years directly impacted Indonesia’s natural rubber market. In response to this phenomenon, the government plans to increase natural rubber domestic consumption to raise Indonesia’s rubber price. This study aimed to determine the effect of increasing natural rubber domestic consumption on natural rubber farmgate prices and analyze other factors those influence it. The Error Correction Model was used to identify the variables that significantly affect Indonesia’s natural rubber farmgate price. The data used in this study were monthly data from January 2012 to December 2017. Results showed that natural rubber domestic consumption did not significantly affect the Indonesia natural rubber farmgate price. However, in the long run, Indonesia’s natural rubber farmgate price was influenced by the previous period of Indonesia’s natural rubber prices, world natural rubber prices, world crude oil prices, and exchange rates. While in the short run, Indonesia’s natural rubber farmgate price was influenced by the previous period of Indonesia’s natural rubber prices, world natural rubber prices, and exchange rate.

Abstract

Indonesia's position as the largest rubber producing country in the world allows them to become the main exporter of natural rubber. Indonesia exports the majority of its natural rubber production to countries like Japan, India, Brazil, the United States, South Korea, China, Turkey, and others. The competition between Indonesia and other producing countries in exporting rubbers to international markets is relatively tight. The aim of this research is to analyze the position of Indonesia’s technically specified natural rubbers (TSNR) in the international market compared to other exporting countries. The analytical method used is the Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) Model. The data used in this research is secondary data from Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Ivory Coast, Vietnam, Belgium, and Nigeria over the last 10 years (2012 – 2022). The results show that there is a tight competition between Indonesia and Thailand, Ivory Coast, Belgium, Nigeria and the Rest of the World in competing for market share of natural rubber in the international market because the relationship between Indonesia's natural rubber and these countries are substitutional. Meanwhile, Indonesia's natural rubber relationship with Malaysia is complementary. Indonesian natural rubber is a normal good, so if there is an increase in prices it will cause a decrease in demand. If there is an increase in demand for rubber exports in the international market, then the country that will benefit the most is Vietnam. Meanwhile, Indonesia is the fourth ranked country that will benefit the most if it happens.

Abstract

Background: Brebes District, recognized as the largest shallot producer in Indonesia, continues to face challenges in ensuring the welfare of its shallot farmers. This situation emerged from a complex network of stakeholders involved in shallot agribusiness in the Brebes District, characterized by a significant presence of intermediaries. Purpose: This research aims to i) analyze the shallot supply chain in the Brebes District by applying the Food Supply Chain Network (FSCN) approach and ii) examine its performance through marketing margin and farmer share. Design/methodology/approach: Data was gathered through interviews with 83 shallot farmers and 12 marketing actors in the Brebes District. Additionally, a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was conducted to gather strategic insights from all stakeholders involved in the shallot agribusiness in the Brebes District. The research used a qualitative approach to answer the FSCN analysis and a quantitative approach to measure the supply chain performance.Findings/Result: This study identified that the supply chain had clear objectives and structured relationships between actors. However, it was not optimized because the business process was not integrated into the long term. The supply chain involved multiple marketing channels, where each level of intermediary had involvement and impact on farmer share and margins. More direct marketing channels, such as Marketing Channel I, where farmers sell directly to village traders, offer the highest farmer share (89%) due to the absence of intermediaries like wholesalers. In contrast, channels involving more intermediaries, such as wholesalers in Channels III and V, result in higher total margins but a lower farmer share (81%). Conclusion: The FSCN analysis of shallots in the Brebes District reveals a complex marketing system with various channels. Direct marketing channels give farmers the highest share by removing intermediaries, while those with more intermediaries offer higher total margins but lower farmer shares. Reducing intermediaries is recommended to boost farmer incomes. Additionally, inefficiencies like poor coordination and limited access to market information hinder overall performance.Originality/value (State of the art): This study introduces a novel application of the FSCN approach to comprehensively analyze the shallot supply chain in Brebes District, Indonesia. The FSCN offers insights into the complex relationships between farmers, traders, and other actors, their challenges, and the potential for improving the system's efficiency. Abstract

Indonesia is one of the main exporters of coffee commodities. Indonesia's coffee production is mostly exported abroad and the rest is to meet domestic needs. Indonesia's coffee exports cover five continents, namely Asia, Africa, Australia, the Americas, and Europe, with the main market share in Europe. This study aims to (1) analyze the market share of Indonesian coffee bean exports in the international market, and (2) analyze the market position of Indonesian coffee bean exports in the international market using the Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) approach. This study uses secondary data in the form of monthly time series for 12 years from 2010 to 2021 with HS code 0901111 (coffee, not roasted, not decaffeinated). The results show Indonesia's coffee bean export market share is third after Brazil and Colombia. Indonesia's price elasticity (uncompensa/1ted) is inelastic and has a negative relationship. The cross-price elasticity (compensated) between Indonesia and Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, Ethiopia, and Uganda is negative and indicates a complementary and inelastic relationship. The expenditure elasticity of Indonesian coffee exports is negative, indicating that Indonesian coffee is included in inferior goods and is inelastic.

Abstract

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become a significant global trade hub. Understanding the factors influencing trade flows is crucial for developing effective strategies to promote trade activities and sustain economic growth. This study examines the impact of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita and population size on trade flows in UAE with major trading partners, including China, Germany, Iraq, India, Japan, and Saudi Arabia, by utilizing a fixed-effects gravity model and panel data from 2000 to 2020. A positive relationship was found between the GDP of UAE and trading partners and bilateral trade, and a negative relationship was found between GDP per capita, the population of UAE, and bilateral trade flows. The distance between the capital city of UAE and its trading partners also has a negative effect on bilateral trade flows. This study suggests that trading partners should improve their GDP per capita. The negative impact of the increasing population size of the UAE on bilateral trade flows indicates that the UAE should improve labor quality and skills that may enhance trade growth and economic development and that trade policies between UAE and its trading partners need to address trade barriers and initiate efforts for their eradication to improve bilateral trade. The policy implication is that trade opportunities should be expanded by exploring trade agreements and fostering diversification of export goods to mitigate domestic competition and open new markets.
