Abstract

This review critically evaluates the effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in fostering critical thinking (CT) through a systematic analysis of experimental and quasi-experimental studies from the past decade. It synthesizes evidence across diverse contexts to identify factors influencing the success of PBL, emphasizing its contextual adaptability and methodological diversity. Notably, this review not only compiles existing evidence but also provides a nuanced analysis of the contextual and methodological elements affecting PBL's success in enhancing CT. The findings reveal that while PBL is generally effective, its superiority over traditional methods is not guaranteed, with some studies reporting comparable outcomes. High-achieving students particularly benefit from PBL, although its impact on problem-solving skills—a vital component of CT—is less pronounced. These insights underline the need for tailored PBL strategies to address its limitations and optimize its benefits. This review suggests integrating complementary methods such as technology and collaborative tools to enrich PBL. Future research should explore innovative adaptations that enhance all dimensions of CT across varied educational settings, thereby maximizing the pedagogical potential of PBL. This comprehensive evaluation provides critical insights for educators and policymakers aiming to advance CT development in contemporary education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the critical thinking abilities of pre-service science teachers, specifically focusing on students majoring in physics. Recognizing the pivotal role of critical thinking in science education, this research investigates the key abilities of analysis, inference, evaluation, and decision-making within the context of routine science learning activities. The study employs a descriptive research design, utilizing quantitative observational methods. A critical thinking ability test, comprising eight items, was administered to 19 pre-service science teachers. The validity and reliability of the test instrument were rigorously assessed through empirical testing and Cronbach's alpha, confirming the instrument's suitability for measuring the intended abilities. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses, including ANOVA, were conducted to evaluate the critical thinking abilities of the participants. The results indicate an overall low level of critical thinking across all indicators, with no significant differences identified among the abilities of analysis, inference, evaluation, and decision-making. The descriptive analysis revealed that the students generally fell into the "Not Critical" category, reflecting significant deficiencies in their ability to engage deeply with scientific content. The ANOVA results further supported these findings, showing a lack of significant variation in critical thinking abilities, which points to a systemic issue within the current educational practices. These findings have important implications for science education, underscoring the need for comprehensive instructional strategies that address all aspects of critical thinking.

Abstract

Science and technology have an important role in facing educational challenges in the 21st century, so that science education, which is part of education, has an important role in preparing students to have scientific literacy. The aim of this research is to determine research trends regarding scientific literacy as a basis for developing ecotourism-based teaching lessons for junior high school students on Lombok Island. The study in writing this article used literature studies or literature reviews from several previous studies published in Scopus indexed journals or proceedings from 2017-2022. The 157 articles obtained were selected into 30 articles. Literature analysis and synthesis was carried out using bibliometric analysis with the VosViewer application. The research results show that a lot of research on scientific literacy has been carried out in Indonesia, and one of the research related to scientific literacy is the development of teaching materials because the development of teaching materials has quite a big influence in increasing students' scientific literacy. However, there is still no research on the development of ecotourism-based teaching materials in increasing students' scientific literacy in Indonesia, so research on this topic is important to do

Abstract

This study aims to develop a practicum guidelines for natural dyes based on Sasambo (Sasak, Samawa, Mbojo) indigenous plants to enhance students' understanding of using natural materials as eco-friendly dyes. The environmental hazards posed by synthetic dyes form the background for the importance of this research. The research method used was Research and Development (R&D) with a 4D model approach (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate). The practicum guidelines includes Sasambo indigenous plants, such as Ruellia Simplex, Curcuma longa, Syzygium cumini, Areca catechu, Pouteria campechiana, Clitoria ternatea, Cajanus  cajan, Murraya paniculata, Pandanus amaryllifolius, Ipomoea batatas. Expert validation and lecturer evaluations demonstrated that the developed practicum guidelines for natural dyes based on Sasambo indigenous plants is suitable for use. This is evidenced by its high level of clarity, graphical appeal, and usability, enabling effective student engagement with sustainable practices. Field and laboratory analyses identified ten plants capable of producing vibrant colors, such as purple, yellow, red, orange, blue, black, and green, with added antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The conclusion of this study is that the developed practicum guidelines can be utilized as an effective learning medium for introducing natural dyes derived from Sasambo indigenous plants, thereby contributing to promoting sustainable industrial practices by leveraging local resources for environmental and economic sustainability.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a valid, practical, and effective problem-based physics teaching module to enhance students’ science process skills (SPS). The research employs a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the 4D development model, which includes the stages of Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate—limited in this case to dissemination among physics teachers. The Develop stage involved the creation of the teaching module as well as validation, practicality, and effectiveness testing. The module was evaluated by three expert validators to assess its validity. Practicality was measured through student and teacher responses and the implementation of the learning process, involving 18 students from Class XI IPA 1 at a high school in Pringgabaya District. Effectiveness testing used a one-group pretest-posttest design and included 36 students from Classes XI IPA 2 and 3 at the same school. Data collection instruments included validation sheets, teacher and student response questionnaires, lesson implementation observation sheets, and SPS questionnaires. Data were analyzed using Aiken’s V index, percentage calculations, and the N-Gain test. The validation results showed that both the module and instruments had average validity ratings categorized as "highly valid" (Aiken's V > 0.80). In terms of practicality, student responses averaged 96.39%, teacher responses averaged 92.95%, and the implementation of the three learning sessions averaged 88.88%. Effectiveness results indicated that the module was moderately effective in improving science process skills, with an N-Gain score of 0.65 (medium category) and an effectiveness rate of 65.71%. It can thus be concluded that the Problem-Based Physics Teaching Module is valid, practical, and moderately effective in enhancing students’ science process skills.
