Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis representasi realitas problematika sosial Palestina dalam film Farha dengan menelusuri hubungan antara struktur karya dan struktur sosial-historis yang melatarbelakanginya melalui perspektif Strukturalisme Genetik. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan analisis Strukturalisme Genetik Lucien Goldmann, yang menekankan hubungan dialektis antara struktur teks film dan struktur sosial. Data penelitian berupa dialog, adegan visual, dan narasi yang berkaitan dengan isu sosial dalam film dikumpulkan melalui teknik simak-catat dan dianalisis menggunakan model reduksi, penyajian, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa film Farha merepresentasikan realitas sosial Palestina pada masa Nakba 1948 melalui penggambaran penjajahan, kekerasan kolonial, krisis kemanusiaan, Pengusiran masalah, krisis identitas, Ketimpangan pendidikan dan hambatan sosial, Struktur patriarki, pernikahan dini, dan stereotif gender. Film ini menghadirkan pandangan dunia bangsa Palestina sebagai dasar pembentukan kesadaran kolektif yang lahir dari pengalaman penindasan dan perjuangan bertahan hidup. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa Farha bukan hanya karya estetik, melainkan media artikulasi memori sejarah dan simbol perlawanan yang menegaskan bahwa sinema dapat berfungsi sebagai ruang dokumentasi kultural, kritik sosial, dan penyampai pesan kemanusiaan universal

Abstract

The school environment should ideally be a safe space for children to learn and develop social relationships. However, in reality, schools often become sites where bullying occurs, as represented in the short film Jaros Indzar by Khalid Fahad. This study aims to analyze the representation of bullying in the short film Jaros Indzar using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with Peircean semiotic analysis, focusing on the triadic relationship between sign, object, and interpretant. The findings indicate that Jaros Indzar represents various forms of bullying, including non-verbal, verbal, and psychological bullying. At the level of sign, five scenes were identified as representing non-verbal bullying, such as pushing, locking someone in, talking behind someone’s back, taking belongings, and making offensive gestures. At the level of object, five scenes represent verbal bullying in the form of insulting, threatening, blaming, cornering, and mocking. Meanwhile, at the level of interpretant, six scenes represent psychological bullying, including cynical stares, mocking laughter, sarcastic smiles, intimidation, and acts of instilling fear.This study demonstrates that Jaros Indzar presents a complex representation of bullying through visual and narrative signs, making the film a reflective and educational medium for understanding the impacts of bullying in the school environment.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the representation of street children and social conditions are constructed as mythical signs in Nadine Labaki's film Capernaum. Employing a qualitative approach with Roland Barthes' semiotic method, this research examines signs at three levels: denotation, connotation, and myth. The results show that the representation of street children, embodied by the character Zain, is shaped through visuals of poverty, neglect, and violence, which at the connotative level signify street children as victims of social structures. This process naturalizes the myth that street children are symbols of the failure of the state and society to protect children's rights. In addition, social conditions such as poverty, injustice, and child neglect are constructed as mythical signs through visual repetition, realistic narratives, and representations of absent state institutions. The film Capernaum ultimately constructs a myth about structural injustice that is considered a “natural” condition in marginalized communities. This study emphasizes that film is not only a medium of entertainment, but also an arena for the production of meaning that is capable of constructing social reality through the mechanism of signs.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the portrait of the corona virus depicted in Yauma Kunna Namsyi's novel Ala At-Thariq based on the perspective of Lucian Goldman's genetic structuralism. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research. Data analysis technique is formulated through three steps, namely, research on the study of intrinsic elements, social life and social and historical backgrounds. The results of this study are: a) the humanitarian facts depicted in this novel are social humanitarian facts, in the form of the response of people who feel anxious and frightened by the corona issue, and the positive impact of covid-19; b) the collective subjects depicted in this novel are two groups with different views. The views of children and adults on corona; c) the author's world view in this novel is more about how children respond when they know the issue of corona and the reality that occurs due to corona; d) the structure of literary works is described by the relationship between characters and characters and characters with objects; and e) the dialectic of understanding-explanations is formulated coherently in the concept of the story.   Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap potret virus Corona yang digambarkan dalam novel Yauma Kunna Namsyi Ala At-Thariq karya Amir Hariri berdasarkan perspektif strukturalisme genetik Lucian Goldman. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Teknik analisis data dirumuskan melalui tiga langkah, yaitu, penelitian terhadap kajian unsur intrinsik, kehidupan sosial, dan latar belakang sosial dan sejarah. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah: a) fakta kemanusiaan yang digambarkan dalam novel ini adalah fakta sosial kemanusiaan, berupa respon masyarakat yang merasa cemas dan takut dengan adanya isu Corona, dan dampak positif dari Covid-19; b) subjek kolektif yang digambarkan dalam novel ini adalah dua kelompok yang memiliki pandangan yang berbeda. Pandangan anak-anak dan orang dewasa terhadap Corona; c) pandangan dunia pengarang dalam novel ini lebih kepada bagaimana respon anak-anak ketika mengetahui isu Corona dan realitas yang terjadi akibat Corona; d) struktur karya sastra digambarkan melalui hubungan antara tokoh dengan tokoh dan tokoh dengan objek; dan e) dialektika pemahaman-penjelasan dirumuskan secara runtut dalam konsep cerita.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis representasi konsep cinta dalam film Arab kontemporer Arīs wa Arusatain karya Elie Semaan dengan menggunakan pendekatan semiotika Charles Sanders Peirce. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif dengan memfokuskan analisis pada tanda-tanda visual dan verbal yang muncul dalam adegan film, seperti dialog, ekspresi wajah, gestur, dan simbol visual yang berkaitan dengan hubungan romantis. Analisis dilakukan melalui hubungan triadik representamen, objek, dan interpretant untuk mengungkap makna cinta yang dikonstruksi dalam film. Selanjutnya, makna tersebut diklasifikasikan ke dalam komponen intimacy, passion, dan commitment berdasarkan teori Segitiga Cinta Robert J. Sternberg sebagai kerangka konseptual dalam pemetaan makna. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa film merepresentasikan cinta sebagai proses relasional yang dibangun melalui kedekatan emosional, ketertarikan romantis, serta keputusan sadar dalam menjalin hubungan. Dengan demikian, film Arīs wa Arusatain dapat dipahami sebagai teks budaya yang mengonstruksi makna cinta secara kompleks melalui sistem tanda sinematik.  Kata Kunci: Film, Representasi cinta, Semiotika Charles Sanders Peirce, Teori segitiga cinta Sternberg

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mengidentifikasi dan mendeskripsikan nilai-nilai moral yang terdapat dalam film Min Wara’ al-Mawj me-lalui analisis semiotika Charles Sanders Peirce. Fokus penelitian diarahkan pada bentuk-bentuk representasi moral yang ditampil-kan melalui adegan, dialog, tindakan tokoh, serta simbol visual yang membangun pesan etis dalam alur cerita film bertema sur-vival keluarga tersebut. Metode yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data berupa observasi mendalam melalui proses menonton film secara berulang, pen-catatan adegan serta dialog yang mengandung unsur moral, dan pengklasifikasian data berdasarkan model triadik Peirce yang meliputi representamen, objek, dan interpretant. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa film ini memuat sejumlah nilai moral, antara lain keteguhan, rasa syukur, kebersamaan, kepedulian, keimanan, kerja keras, pantang menyerah, solidaritas keluarga, dan tolong-menolong. Nilai-nilai tersebut muncul melalui para tokoh dalam menghadapi tantangan bertahan hidup ikatan keluarga dan keya-kinan kepada Tuhan. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa Min Wara’ al-Mawj bukan hanya menghadirkan ketegangan dan drama pet-ualangan, tetapi juga menyampaikan pesan moral mendalam mengenai ketahanan, tanggung jawab, dan kemanusiaan. Penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa analisis semiotika Peirce efek-tif digunakan untuk mengungkap nilai-nilai moral dalam media film, terutama dalam menginterpretasikan tanda-tanda visual dan verbal sebagai sarana penyampai pesan etis kepada penonton.   Kata Kunci: Analisis Semiotika, Film, Nilai Moral, Peirce, Representamen, Tanda

Abstract

His study aims to analyze the intrinsic elements in the novel "Kotak Waktu" by Pudjangga Lama through Robert Stanton's Structuralism approach. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data source in this study is the novel "Kotak Waktu" by Pudjangga Lama. Data was obtained through literature study by reading, recording, and classifying the data found in the novel "Kotak Waktu". The results of this study indicate that the novel "Kotak Waktu" by Pudjangga Lama has the theme of Existentialism and Reflection on the Journey of Time Taka and his four friends in the past and in the future, varied characters and their characterization, using a mixed plot (forward-backward), as well as setting, place, time, and style of language that build on each other. The point of view used in this novel is the third person omniscient. And the message in the novel "Kotak Waktu" by Pudjangga Lama is to always maintain relationships with fellow human beings.

Abstract

The film Wadjda (2012), directed by Haifaa al-Mansour, tells the story of a Saudi girl who rebels against gender norms with her ambition to obtain a green bicycle. This study examines Wadjda's psychological journey in fulfilling Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs—from basic needs, safety, love and esteem, to self-actualization—within a feminist framework. The method used is a semiotic text analysis of key scenes, combined with a qualitative descriptive approach. The results show that Wadjda's simple act of riding a bicycle becomes a symbol of women's independence and freedom in a patriarchal society, marking the phase of self-actualization. Meanwhile, the roles of the family, school, and patriarchal society reveal the overlapping dynamics of security and self-esteem needs. This study is significant as it enriches feminist scholarship with Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Theory in Arab countries from a psychological perspective, and offers a new perspective for analyzing non-Western films within gender and developmental psychology discourse.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of sexual violence against women in the Egyptian social drama Cairo 678 (2010), employing Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The film was chosen for its bold exploration of the critical issue of sexual violence in Cairo’s public spaces and women’s resistance against it. Using Barthes’ framework of denotation, connotation, and myth, this research aims to reveal how the film’s visual and narrative signs depict sexual violence while dismantling patriarchal myths that normalize such acts. The study adopts a descriptive qualitative method, with data consisting of scenes, dialogues, and audiovisual elements from Cairo 678. Data collection techniques include documentation-based observation and literature review. Barthes’ semiotic analysis is applied through stages of sign identification, denotation (literal meaning), connotation (cultural and emotional meaning), and myth (naturalized ideology). The findings demonstrate that Cairo 678 explicitly portrays various forms of sexual violence against women, ranging from non-verbal harassment and physical assault to severe collective sexual violence. This representation operates not only at the denotative level but also constructs powerful connotations of victim helplessness, anger, and trauma, while critiquing the failures of social and legal systems.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal the construction of the identity of Pemuda Persis cadres as embodied in the song Mars Pemuda Pembela Agama by Suraedi through the semiotic theory of Roland Barthes. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a semiotic theoretical approach based on Roland Barthes' framework. This approach is chosen to uncover the symbolic meanings within the lyrics of Pemuda Pembela Agama as a representation of the ideological identity of Pemuda Persis cadres. The data analysis technique follows Barthes’ semiotic model, which includes denotative analysis to uncover the literal meaning of the lyrics, connotative analysis to interpret meaning based on the cultural and ideological context of the organization, and myth analysis to explore how the ideological message is naturally accepted by the organization’s members. The song Pemuda Pembela Agama by Suraedi represents the identity of Pemuda Persis cadres through Barthes’ semiotic approach, from literal to ideological meaning. Its lyrics emphasize the role of youth as pioneers of Islamic preaching (dakwah) and social transformation with intellectual strength grounded in the Qur'an and Hadith. Through connotation and myth, the cadres are portrayed as guardians of Islamic purity, reformers, and intellectual fortresses of the Muslim community. This song is not merely a formal symbol but serves as an ideological instrument to shape cadres with religious, intellectual, militant, and socially driven character.
