Abstract

This study developed nanofibers derived from sugar palm fiber waste, incorporating citric acid and polyethylene glycol (PEG) modifications to adsorb crystal violet (CV) dye. The synthesis process involved alkalization-acid hydrolysis and bleaching techniques. Subsequent analyses of nanofiber characteristics were conducted using Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX). The efficacy of these modified nanofibers in adsorbing CV was quantitatively measured using an Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer. The study successfully synthesized nanofibers from sugar palm fiber waste with modifications: PEG-modified nanofibers (NP 2 and NP 24) and citric acid-modified nanofibers (NS 2 and NS 24). These modifications resulted in nanofibers with a smooth, white texture. FTIR analysis of the samples (N, NP 2, NP 24, NS 2, and NS 24) revealed the presence of functional groups essential for cellulose, specifically -OH, C-H, and C-O groups. The addition of citric acid introduced a new group, C=O, albeit with very weak intensity. PEG modifications were evident from the stretching observed in the -OH groups. SEM analysis confirmed the presence of a layer on the nanofibers, attributed to citric acid (NS 2 and NS 24) and PEG (NP 2 and NP 24). XRD results indicated that the pre-and post-modification nanofibers exhibited a semi-crystalline phase. The adsorption mechanism was predominantly guided by Van der Waals electrostatic interactions between the absorbent material and the adsorbate. Intriguingly, the citric acid and PEG modifications did not significantly alter the adsorption outcomes. The adsorption capacity remained stable over time, as evidenced by measurements of 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 minutes.

Abstract

Abstract: This study investigates strategies to improve the quality of teacher services in vocational high schools by examining the roles of knowledge management, interpersonal communication, organizational support, and job satisfaction. As vocational education serves as a cornerstone for human resource development, teacher performance plays a critical role in achieving its objectives. However, initial findings indicate that teacher service quality at PGRI Vocational High Schools in Bogor Regency remains below expectations, particularly in dimensions such as reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy, and tangibles. This research aims to propose actionable strategies to address these shortcomings by exploring the interrelationships among key variables. Adopting a mixed-method approach, the study utilized path analysis to test hypotheses regarding the relationships among variables and employed the SITOREM method to prioritize indicators for improvement. From a population of 289 teachers, a sample of 168 was selected using the Slovin formula. Data collection was conducted through validated and reliable questionnaires, followed by statistical analyses, including normality tests, regression analysis, and multicollinearity assessments, ensuring the reliability and robustness of the findings. The results demonstrated significant direct and indirect effects of knowledge management, interpersonal communication, and organizational support on job satisfaction and teacher service quality. Critical areas identified for improvement included knowledge acquisition, openness, fairness, and job satisfaction, while strengths such as knowledge utilization and group equity were highlighted for maintenance. The SITOREM analysis provided a structured approach to prioritize interventions, identifying fairness, supervisor support, and empathy as key areas for actionable improvement. This study emphasizes the interconnected role of leadership, effective communication, and supportive organizational structures in creating an environment conducive to high-quality teaching. Its findings contribute to the broader dialogue on enhancing teacher service quality in vocational education. Practical recommendations include implementing targeted training initiatives, revising institutional policies, and fostering supportive organizational cultures. While the study offers valuable insights, it acknowledges limitations such as its reliance on self-reported data and the contextual focus on vocational high schools. Future research is encouraged to include additional variables and expand the findings to different educational contexts.   Keywords: teacher service quality, knowledge management, interpersonal communication, organizational support, job satisfaction, SITOREM analysis.

Abstract

This article, using historical and ethnographic methods, explores the maritime cultural ecology of the Biak people in Sowek Village, Supiori Regency, Papua, Indonesia. Historically part of the Biak-Numfor and Supiori islands, Supiori became a separate district in 2003 under Law No. 35 of 2003. The Biak people in Sowek Village, who identify as the Sowek people, have lived in the Aruri Archipelago of Supiori Island for centuries. While their language and culture are part of the Biak-Numfor cultural family, their identity is rooted in their specific geographic location. Supiori Regency is predominantly oceanic and covered by mangrove forests, with only 25% of its land being dry. This landscape has shaped the Sowek people's reliance on marine resources and maritime trade. Contact with the outside world began long ago, facilitated by maritime trade and headhunting expeditions to Maluku, Ternate-Tidore, and the Raja Ampat Archipelago. The Sowek people navigate these waters using traditional boats such as the Wairon, Waimansusu, and Karures, guided by advanced astronomical knowledge of constellations like Orion (sawakoi) and Scorpion (romanggwandi). The maritime cultural ecology of the Biak people in Sowek Village, still preserved as a historical heritage, includes traditional fishing with nets, the cultivation of mangosteen (aibon), blacksmithing (kamasan), and the ecological conservation of mangrove forests, which serve as both fish habitats and natural fortifications for the village.

Abstract

Anthocyanins are highly coloured polyphenols, a class of flavonoids, which are natural, non-toxic, and water-soluble compounds. Because of that, anthocyanins have been used in numerous applications, such as natural colorants for foods, beverages, and textiles. However, anthocyanins have some drawbacks regarding their stability towards temperature, pH, and light, leading to degradation. One method to improve anthocyanins’ stability can be achieved through a complexation reaction of anthocyanins with metal cations. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the stability and colour profiles of anthocyanins extracted from Java Plum fruits (Syzygium cumini) complexed with Al3+, Fe3+, and Ca2+ ions in pH 1-12. Previously, anthocyanins from Java Plum fruits have been identified by LC-MS as cyanidin-3-O-glucoside ([M]+, m/z 449.3), delphinidin-3-O-glucoside ([M]+, m/z 465.3), and petunidin O-glucoside ([M]+, m/z 479.3). The ATR FTIR was also performed to confirm the functional group of anthocyanins. The colour of each solution at different pH was evaluated by UV-Vis Spectrophotometer at 200-800 nm. Complexation of anthocyanins with Al3+, Fe3+, and Ca2+ ions showed various colours at different pHs. The complexation of anthocyanins with Al3+ at pH 4-5 developed a blue colour. The intensity of the blue colour increases with an increase in Al3+ ion concentration. This investigation showed the potential application of anthocyanin-metal chelation for the textile industry due to the range of colour produced. Furthermore, the complexation of anthocyanins to produce blue colour can be an alternative in food industries as this colour is difficult to obtain in acidic pH.
