Abstract

This article, using historical and ethnographic methods, explores the maritime cultural ecology of the Biak people in Sowek Village, Supiori Regency, Papua, Indonesia. Historically part of the Biak-Numfor and Supiori islands, Supiori became a separate district in 2003 under Law No. 35 of 2003. The Biak people in Sowek Village, who identify as the Sowek people, have lived in the Aruri Archipelago of Supiori Island for centuries. While their language and culture are part of the Biak-Numfor cultural family, their identity is rooted in their specific geographic location. Supiori Regency is predominantly oceanic and covered by mangrove forests, with only 25% of its land being dry. This landscape has shaped the Sowek people's reliance on marine resources and maritime trade. Contact with the outside world began long ago, facilitated by maritime trade and headhunting expeditions to Maluku, Ternate-Tidore, and the Raja Ampat Archipelago. The Sowek people navigate these waters using traditional boats such as the Wairon, Waimansusu, and Karures, guided by advanced astronomical knowledge of constellations like Orion (sawakoi) and Scorpion (romanggwandi). The maritime cultural ecology of the Biak people in Sowek Village, still preserved as a historical heritage, includes traditional fishing with nets, the cultivation of mangosteen (aibon), blacksmithing (kamasan), and the ecological conservation of mangrove forests, which serve as both fish habitats and natural fortifications for the village.

Abstract

Anthocyanins are highly coloured polyphenols, a class of flavonoids, which are natural, non-toxic, and water-soluble compounds. Because of that, anthocyanins have been used in numerous applications, such as natural colorants for foods, beverages, and textiles. However, anthocyanins have some drawbacks regarding their stability towards temperature, pH, and light, leading to degradation. One method to improve anthocyanins’ stability can be achieved through a complexation reaction of anthocyanins with metal cations. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the stability and colour profiles of anthocyanins extracted from Java Plum fruits (Syzygium cumini) complexed with Al3+, Fe3+, and Ca2+ ions in pH 1-12. Previously, anthocyanins from Java Plum fruits have been identified by LC-MS as cyanidin-3-O-glucoside ([M]+, m/z 449.3), delphinidin-3-O-glucoside ([M]+, m/z 465.3), and petunidin O-glucoside ([M]+, m/z 479.3). The ATR FTIR was also performed to confirm the functional group of anthocyanins. The colour of each solution at different pH was evaluated by UV-Vis Spectrophotometer at 200-800 nm. Complexation of anthocyanins with Al3+, Fe3+, and Ca2+ ions showed various colours at different pHs. The complexation of anthocyanins with Al3+ at pH 4-5 developed a blue colour. The intensity of the blue colour increases with an increase in Al3+ ion concentration. This investigation showed the potential application of anthocyanin-metal chelation for the textile industry due to the range of colour produced. Furthermore, the complexation of anthocyanins to produce blue colour can be an alternative in food industries as this colour is difficult to obtain in acidic pH.

Abstract

Engaging in casual conversation is essential for EFL learners, as it enhances fluency, boosts confidence, and provides authentic language practice. However, Indonesian learners often face challenges in managing spontaneous interactions effectively, leading them to employ various strategies to manage communication breakdowns. This study aims to explore the communication strategies used by Indonesian EFL learners and examine the factors influencing their strategic choices. This study involved third-semester English education students and adopted a descriptive qualitative method with conversational analysis. Data were collected through audio-video recordings and interviews and analyzed based on Celce-Murcia et al.’s (1995) framework of communication strategies. The findings reveal that learners utilized all five main types and fourteen sub-types of communication strategies. Stalling or time-gaining strategies are the most frequently used, followed by achievement strategies or compensatory strategies, interactional strategies, self-monitoring strategies, and avoidance or reduction strategies. The frequent sub-types employed include fillers, hesitation devices, and gambits; self and other repetition; code-switching; and meaning negotiation strategies. Conversely, strategies such as message replacement, topic avoidance, all-purpose words, word coinage, and foreignizing were not employed. In addition, learners’ strategic choices were influenced by factors such as limited vocabulary and language proficiency, cognitive processing needs, the desire to convey meaning, efforts to ensure mutual understanding, self-awareness of errors, and topic complexity. Finally, this study offers some pedagogical implications for the betterment of EFL teaching and learning

Abstract

Science education, especially chemistry, emphasizes the application of science to solve problems encountered in daily life to foster chemical literacy skills. This study aims to prove the impact of socio-scientific issue (SSI) application in the problem-based learning (PBL) model on student's chemical literacy ability on acid and base materials. This study employed a quasi-experimental method through a pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design. Its population consisted of 11th-grade science students from one of Surakarta's public high schools in the 2023/2024 academic year. It used class XI.6 as the control class and class XI.7 as the experimental class. The sample was established using the cluster random sampling technique. Based on the analysis of the hypothesis test carried out with the independent sample t-test, the Sig. value is 0.000. The mean chemical literacy score in the experimental class is 72, whereas that in the control class is 62. The enhancement of chemical literacy in the experimental class is 63% (quite effective), while that in the control class is 50% (less effective). This proves that the effect of SSI application in the PBL Model on students' chemistry literacy ability was more significant than the PBL without SSI application
