Abstract

This study aims to improve the cognitive ability of 4–5-year-old children in recognizing numerical symbols through the use of number ball educational play tools (APE) at Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal Kindergarten for the 2024/2025 academic year. The background of this research lies in the low cognitive achievement at the early preoperational stage, where children require meaningful and concrete stimulation appropriate to their developmental level. This study is a Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles using the Kemmis & McTaggart model. The subjects were 15 Group A children. Instruments used included observation sheets and documentation. Pre-cycle results showed that only 26.7% of the children were in the "Developing as Expected" (BSH) category, with none in the "Very Well Developed" (BSB) category. After the first cycle, the percentage increased to 53.3% (BSH+BSB), and in the second cycle reached 80%, with 6 children (40%) in the BSB category and another 6 (40%) in BSH. These results indicate that the number ball media is effective in enhancing early childhood number symbol recognition skills. Therefore, concrete play-based learning such as number ball activities can enhance symbolic concept understanding and support the achievement of the zone of proximal development in accordance with Vygotsky's theory.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of fishing activities on Baron Beach on the socioeconomic conditions of the residents of Kemadang Village from 2011 to 2017. Using historical methods, this study analyzes how the transition from land-based agriculture to fishing has affected income, welfare, and infrastructure development in the region. The results show that the abundant fish production at Baron Beach has significantly increased fishermen's income, who now earn 2-3 times a week compared to the twice-a-year income from agriculture. This income increase has directly improved living standards, such as increased ownership of goods, access to higher education for fishermen's children, and improved housing quality from semi-permanent to permanent structures. Fishing activities have also driven improvements in facilities and infrastructure, including the construction of a lighthouse, renovation of the fish auction building, relocation of vendors, and an increase in the number of boats from 51 to 55 units. This study highlights the socio-economic transformation brought about by the shift to fishing as the primary livelihood in Kemadang Village.

Abstract

ABSTRACT. The current global warming issue has encouraged a lot of research on edible films. The use of edible films has become an international trend and is now essential for our products to compete in the global market. Bioactive compounds from plants can be incorporated into edible films to enhance their biological activity, including their antibacterial properties. This study developed a chitosan-based edible film with the addition of velvet bean aqueous extract (VAE) and cinnamon essential oil (CEO), aiming for high antibacterial activity. The objectives of this study were to isolate and identify the chemical components of CEO, test its antibacterial activity, find the most optimum formulation of a chitosan-based edible film with VAE and CEO in terms of antibacterial activity (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923), and analyze the physical and morphological properties of the resulting edible film. The research methods included a literature review and laboratory experiments, with procedures involving the isolation and GC-MS-based identification of CEO chemical components, antibacterial activity testing of CEO, optimization of a chitosan-based edible film formulation with the addition of VAE and CEO based on antibacterial activity test against E. coli ATCC 25922 and S. aureus ATCC 25923 (well diffusion method), and characterization of the best film’s physical properties (thickness, tensile strength, elongation, solubility, WVP, and WVTR) and morphological analysis (SEM method). The results of this study were as follows: (a) CEO contained cinnamaldehyde (52.86%) and 2- methoxycinnamaldehyde (47.06%); (b) CEO had very strong antibacterial activity against E. coli ATCC 25922 and S. aureus ATCC 25923, with inhibition zones of 46.28 mm and 47.95 mm, respectively; (c) the most optimal edible film formulation consisted of chitosan with 30.0% VAE and 4.0% CEO, yielding strong antibacterial activity against E. coli ATCC 25922 (15.50 mm inhibition) and S. aureus ATCC 25923 (16.71 mm inhibition), with a thickness of 0.15 mm, tensile strength of 0.32 Mpa, elongation of 0.32%, solubility of 4.89%, WVP of 8.82 g/m2.h), and WVTR of 3.92 g/m.h. Morphological analysis of the edible film showed a relatively flat and smooth surface with minor cracks in some areas. Keywords: antibacterial packaging, chitosan, cinnamon essential oil, edible film, velvet bean aqueous extract

Abstract

Obesity is a health problem in many countries, both developed and developing, including Indonesia. The increasing trend indicates that obesity in Indonesia remains a serious public health issue. This study aimed to determine the relationship between BMI and total cholesterol levels in the community of Malang City, which may serve as a basis for policymaking in community-based non-communicable disease prevention programs. The study was conducted using a cross-sectional design on 30 respondents, selected through purposive random sampling. The results of the bivariate analysis showed a p-value < 0.05, indicating a significant relationship between BMI and total cholesterol levels. The correlation coefficient (ρ) was 0.738, suggesting a strong positive correlation between the two variables. This means that the higher a person’s BMI, the higher their total cholesterol levels tend to be in this population. In conclusion, this study demonstrates a significant and strong relationship between BMI and total cholesterol levels in the studied community. These findings support the hypothesis that excess body weight contributes to increased cholesterol levels and may serve as a basis for preventive and promotive interventions in the community.

Abstract

Introduction: Down syndrome is a common genetic disorder in children, with rising cases in Central Java—from 210 in 2020 to 650 in 2024—a 63% increase in three years. Children with Down syndrome face developmental challenges across all domains including motor, sensory, cognitive, language, and social aspects. Parental involvement, especially mothers, plays a crucial role in optimizing developmental outcomes. However, observations at POTADS Semarang indicate limited maternal knowledge and inadequate stimulation practices. This study aims to explore maternal knowledge and behaviors related to developmental stimulation in children with Down syndrome at POTADS Semarang.. Methods: This analytic survey employed a cross-sectional approach conducted in August 2024 with 75 mothers meeting the inclusion criteria. Data were collected using a structured and closed questionnaire. Ethical approval was obtained from the Research Bioethics Committee of Sultan Agung Islamic University, and informed consent was obtained from all participants. Results: The study found a significant correlation between maternal knowledge and stimulation behavior. Statistical analysis showed a 2-tailed significance value of 0.003 (<0.05). Most mothers (44%) had moderate knowledge of child development stimulation, and the majority (53.3%) demonstrated negative behaviors in providing age-appropriate developmental stimulation. Conclusion: Among the 75 respondents, 40 (53.3%) were over 35 years old, 52 (69.3%) were unemployed, and 58 (77.3%) had completed secondary education. Spearman Rank test analysis yielded a p-value of 0.003 (<0.05), indicating a significant relationship between maternal knowledge and behaviors regarding developmental stimulation. Mothers with moderate and low levels of knowledge were more likely to exhibit negative stimulation behaviors.
