Abstract

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) poses significant threats to livestock production systems globally, particularly cloven-hoofed animals. Indonesia's recent FMD outbreak, following 35 years of disease-free status, created substantial economic challenges for the dairy sector. Despite the scale of the outbreak, limited research has focused on its specific financial impacts on smallholder dairy farms, creating a critical knowledge gap for effective policy development. This study analyses the financial impact of foot and mouth disease (FMD) on dairy farming, focusing on changes in revenue, costs, and profitability before and after the outbreak. Through descriptive and input?output analysis, economic losses were quantified on the basis of structured surveys and secondary data from affected dairy farmers. The findings indicate that the FMD significantly reduced milk production revenue (-8%) while increasing overall farm costs (+6%), leading to a drastic 84% decline in farm profits. Increased spending on veterinary treatments, feed supplementation, and transportation further exacerbated financial instability, whereas a slight increase in livestock sales (+11%) served as a short-term coping mechanism. These results highlight the need for enhanced disease control measures, financial assistance programs, and policy interventions to support affected farmers. Implementing effective vaccination strategies, improving biosecurity protocols, and establishing government-backed economic relief programs can mitigate the financial burden of FMD on the dairy sector. This study contributes to the limited literature on the economic consequences of livestock disease outbreaks in Indonesia and emphasises the need for long-term resilience strategies to sustain dairy farm profitability and stability in disease-prone regions.

Abstract

When doing teaching, the teacher sometime uses games in delivering the material in order to make it fun. Wright et al said that games also help the teacher to create contexts in which the language is useful and meaningful. Whisper game, also known as ‘the broken telephone’, is a game that whisper or pass the message from person to person in a group, and the last person will announce the message that he/she got and compare it with the first person to see the similarity. The interested one of these games is sometimes the message will change to another message or information. In this research the writers used experimental method by using quasi experimental pre-test-post-test group design. The pre-test was given before the treatment at the eighth grade of one Junior High School in South Lampung. At the end of the treatment, the writers gave the students a test, which was called post-test. Towards the end, the score of pre-test and post-test compared in order to find the answer for the research questions. After giving the post-test, then the writers analyzed the data. From the data analysis, it was found that the result of independent sample T-test was 2.99. This result then was consulted to the score of T-critical, in this case T-critical 0.05 was 2. The hypothesis proposal was that Ho is accepted, if the score of Tobserve>Tcritical. From analysis the score of T-observe was higher than T-critical (0.05), so Ho was accepted, in other words, from this research, it was known that Chinese Whisper Game could improve the students’ speaking ability. Therefore, there was a significant influence of using Chinese Whisper Game towards students’ speaking ability.Key words: Chinese Whisper Game, Experimental Design, Speaking Ability

Abstract

Abstract Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) remains a leading cause of morbidity among children under five in Indonesia. Household environmental factors, such as the presence of smokers and the type of cooking fuel used are often associated with an increased risk of ARI. This study aimed to analyze the association between these factors and ARI incidence among children under five in Kelekar, Gelumbang, and Lembak Subdistricts, Muara Enim Regency. A cross-sectional design was applied with a total sample of 1,276 households with children under five, obtained through total sampling. Data were collected using the 2024 PBL FKM Unsri questionnaire and analyzed with the Chi-Square test. Results showed an ARI prevalence of 5.9%; 75.2% of children lived with smokers, and 97.9% of households used clean fuels (gas/electricity). Bivariate analysis indicated no significant association between the presence of smokers and ARI incidence (p=0.981) nor between the type of cooking fuel and ARI incidence (p=1.000). In conclusion, these two factors were not associated with ARI incidence. Other factors, such as household ventilation, low smoking frequency, outdoor smoking habits, as well as nutritional and environmental conditions, may play a more dominant role in influencing ARI among children under five.   Keywords: toddlers, cooking fuel, the presence of smokers, ARI

Abstract

This research aimed to increase the reproduction of dairy cows with artificial insemination (AI) in Filial Friesian Holstein cows using sexed semen. This research was conducted in Pandesari Village, Pujon District, Malang Regency, East Java. The 114 Filial Friesian Holstein cows were used in this research and divided into three Treatments: T1: 38 cows were inseminated using unsexed semen, T2: 38 cows were inseminated using albumin sedimentation sexed semen, and T3: 38 cows were inseminated using Percoll density gradient centrifugation (PDGC) sexed semen. The material was selected by purposive sampling with a minimum body condition score (BCS) specification of 2.5 (scale 1-5); the material had normal reproductive organs and showed signs of heat/estrus. The parameters of this study are the percentage of non-return rate (NRR) 1, NRR 2, and conception rate (CR). The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive analysis. The differences in NRR and CR between the unsexed sperm, sexed sperm with albumin sedimentation, and sexed sperm with PDGC were analyzed with the chi-square test and were considered significant at p < 0.05. The chi-square test was carried out to compare the observed values with the expected values. The results showed that the success of artificial insemination was greater by using albumin-sedimented sexed semen compared to unsexed semen or PDGC-sexed semen, with NRR values of 1 (95%), NRR values of 2 (87%) and CR values of 63%. The conception rate of artificial insemination using albumin-sedimented sexed semen was 63% greater than that of artificial insemination using unsexed semen and PDGC-sexed semen, which obtained the same value of 47%.
