Abstract

Mathematical proficiency as a goal of learning mathematics and other skills developed by teachers in schools through a didactic and pedagogical activity. The quality of teaching mathematics in elementary education is largely determined by the teacher's perspective on Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) in mathematics learning itself. This study aims to see the perspectives of elementary school teachers who are experienced in teaching mathematics regarding several things that are needed in learning mathematics in elementary schools. The study used a survey method which was conducted on elementary school teachers who have experience in teaching mathematics with various educational backgrounds and different schools (n = 65) through random sampling. The study is focused on investigating the pedagogical perspective, the perspective of mathematics learning objectives, and the perspective of mathematics content taught in elementary schools. These perspectives are arranged in a research instrument in the form of a questionnaire containing multiple answer questions and open-ended answers. Data collection was carried out with the help of google forms. The data analysis used is quantitative and qualitative approaches. The results showed that various innovative learning models were known by the teacher, although not all teachers were sure that they had implemented the learning model according to the syntax of the learning model. Also, teachers are still optimistic that innovative learning models have flexibility so that they can be applied in pandemic conditions.

Abstract

Changes in the education system due to COVID-19 pandemic through distance learning (PJJ) have made it difficult to accommodate students’ needs in achieving mathematical proficiency. The needs of these students are based on students learning style preference (KGB), how students obtain information, as one of the determinants of success in learning mathematics. This study aims to investigate the extent to which each student’s KGB can adapt to the PJJ designed through RADEC (Read-Answer-Discuss-Explain-Create) and direct learning. A quasi-experimental study with 2 x 3 factorial designed was conducted involving 56 4th graders from a private elementary school in Bandung. The research instrument used was the KGB scale and mathematical conceptual understanding (MCU) test. The result of this study showed that there were differences in students’ MCU viewed by KGB during PJJ which was more accommodating to visual students. It is necessary to improve the PJJ design that accommodate each KGB.

Abstract

Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa mampu untuk mengajar matematika dengan proses pemodelan berdasarkan pendekatan realistis.ABSTRACTSome background of this research are that current mathematics teaching still emphasize on the expository method, one way communication, and chalk and talk approaches. Most of students’ performance in mathematics teaching are watching the teacher solved the problems on the chalkboard. Less opportunity is given to the students for doing mathematics creatively to show their activities. The aim of this study is to develop university students’ ability in mathematical modeling and teaching mathematics using modeling for junior as well as senior secondary students. The initial materials and the workshop on mathematical modeling were conducted for a number of teachers and university students. Four university students were involved in mathematical modeling research along with the research team. By using mathematical modeling, it is possible for students to reinvent mathematical concepts, procedures, or the law of mathematics which has been discovered by mathematicians previously. Results indicated that mathematics modeling improved students’ communication in mathematics, students’ competence in mathematical strategic, students’ ability in problem solving and students’ adaptive reasoning. This mathematical model also emerged positive attitude towards mathematics that mathematical model activities were interesting, help students to understand mathematical concepts, and to give opportunity for students to communicate their mathematical ideas. This indicates that the university students were able to teach mathematics by modeling process based on the realistic approaches.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore students' attitudes toward statistics (ATS) based on the beginning and the end of learning, based on differences in fields of study, and examine its relationship with statistical acheivement. ATS was measured by an attitude instrument, namely The Survey of Attitudes toward Statistics (SATS) which consists of six dimensions (affective, cognitive competence, difficulty, value, interest, effort). Research respondents were undergraduate students who took lectures on statistical recognition that came from at one of the universities in South Sumatra. The results of the descriptive analysis showed the variation of ATS in each dimension of attitudes classified into positive, neutral, or negative attitudes. Although there are variations in the response of student attitudes in each dimension, but the results of statistical tests have not been able to show differences in attitudes between the beginning and the end of learning in each dimension. The differences in attitudes between the beginning and the end of learning that are statistically significant are in the dimensions of affective, value, and effort. The difference in the field of student science shows the difference in ATS, but only in the dimension of value. This study does not have enough evidence to state that there is a significant relationship between student attitudes to statistics and the results of learning statistics.

Abstract

The gap between the concept image and the concept definition will greatly affect a person’s understanding of the concept. This study aims to reveal the gap between the concept image and the concept definition, and the causes of the emergence of the gap. The research subjects were 16 first-year mathematics students at one of the universities in Aceh, Indonesia. Data were obtained from the results of written tests and in-depth interviews. This qualitative research with a phenomenological study approach was analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the gap that occurs in the concept includes: the division of a non-zero number by zero yields infinity, the concept of dividing zero by zero is zero, the concept of dividing a number by zero is the same as the concept of the limit, e.g., , and the concept of the left-hand limit as  means that the satisfied value of x is all negative numbers such that . The emergence of these concept images results from the subject's learning experience at school and a calculus course. This finding provides insights and considerations for educators to comprehensively introduce students to the concept of infinity to avoid misunderstandings in limit and next materials.
