Abstract

English as a foreign language instruction and learning in Indonesia. Speaking is one of the core abilities to be acquired in the process of teaching and learning English. Speaking serves as a crucial component of communication. Gaining proficiency in speaking English is essential for all students to be able to converse in the language. Speaking is a skill that both first and second language learners should focus on. The most crucial part of learning a second or foreign language is developing speaking abilities, and proficiency is determined by one's capacity to carry on a conversation in the target language (Nunan, 1995). The second problem is that learners complain that they cannot remember anything to say and they do not have any motivation to express themselves. This is supported by Rivers (1968) who thinks that learners often have nothing to say probably because their Lecturers had selected a topic that is not appropriate for them or they do have enough information about it. The method used in this research is descriptive quantitative. The data obtained from the test was analysed by Likert scale procedure indicated whether one strongly agree (SA), Agree (A), Undecided (U), Disagree (D), Strongly Disagree (SD) with each statement. The score was determine by summing the point of value of each statement. The technique of analyzed data in the research was used descriptive percentage. The technique was used asses variable of the research. The researcher classify their collect data from observation class and questionnaire, data collection from questionnaires is Likert Scale was used to assess and calculated data which obtain from questionnaires. Based on the findings and discussion, it could be concluded that there are some problems in speaking English by the fifth semester at Ship electrical engineering of Ivet University. The result of the study, there are some students’ problems in practicing speaking English. The problems students’ in practicing speaking English are inhibition, nothing to say, low or uneven participation and mother tongue used. It is because they do not master the three primary elements of speaking namely, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation

Abstract

The cultivation of self-regulatory skills holds paramount importance for individuals’ future success, particularly in the context of evolving educational modalities prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic. As learning transitions between online during the pandemic and offline post-pandemic, understanding the nuances of self-regulation becomes imperative. Thus, this study sought to achieve three objectives: (1) analyzing disparities in student self-regulation between online and offline settings, (2) examining the interplay between online and offline self-regulation, and (3) scrutinizing the relationship between self-regulation and learning outcomes. Employing a methodological approach involving questionnaire administration and interviews, data analysis was conducted utilizing the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test and Spearman’s rho test. The findings reveal that offline self-regulation markedly surpasses its online counterpart, indicating a significant discrepancy. Furthermore, a robust correlation is observed between students’ self-regulation during online learning and the subsequent development of offline self-regulation. Additionally, while the correlation between self-regulation and learning outcomes is characterized as weak, it underscores the tangible influence of self-regulation on enhancing academic achievements. These findings underscore the critical role of self-regulation in navigating diverse learning environments and underscore the need for targeted interventions to bolster students’ self-regulatory competencies.DOI: 10.17977/jps.v12i12024p007

Abstract

Through a method called "Learning Ownership," students actively participate in the educational process and comprehend the context, objectives, and applications of the content they have learned. A learner can customize each educational encounter to align with their present and future learning goals once they have control over their learning processes. The skills and practices required for ownership are highly versatile and applicable in various educational environments. The aim of this study was to unveil the effect of the learning ownership-PBL model on students' critical thinking skills. The sampling technique used in this research was random sampling, which consisted of 2 groups: the control group used the PBL model, and the experimental group used the learning ownership-PBL model. For the learning ownership parameter, we use a questionnaire consisting of 33 questions, and for the critical thinking parameter, we use an essay consisting of 5 questions. The test used is an independent sample T-test and Spearman test to see the correlation between learning ownership and critical thinking skills. The study found that students in the experimental group improved their learning ownership and critical thinking scores more than students in the PBL model alone in every way. Learning ownership (PBL) strongly correlated and significantly increased students' critical thinking skills. Thus, we conclude that learning ownership-PBL can increase student critical thinking skills. DOI: https://doi.org/10.17977/jps.v13i12025p001

According to the 2023 Indonesia Health Survey (IHS), the prevalence of active smokers aged ≥10 years reached 27,05%, with a significant increase among adolescents, particularly males aged 15–19 years, reaching 56.5%. This study aims to examine the association between family-related factors and smoking behaviour among students in Indonesia. This research employed an analytical Cross-sectional design using secondary data. The survey covered districts and cities across 34 provinces in Indonesia, with a total sample of 33,135 student respondents. Data were analysed using univariate analysis with frequency distribution, bivariate analysis using the Chi-square test, and multivariate analysis using multiple logistic regression. The analysis showed that 22.3% of students had smoked in the past 30 days. After adjusting for covariates, several family-related factors were significantly associated with smoking behaviour, including parental education level (AOR=1.14; 95% CI: 1.05–1.19), parental employment status (AOR=1.14; 95% CI: 1.03–1.26), parental marital status (AOR=1.20; 95% CI: 1.08–1.31), risky behaviours within the family (AOR=1.67; 95% CI: 1.58–1.80), lack of family warmth (AOR=1.18; 95% CI: 1.20–1.26), absence of family warmth (AOR: 1.41; 95% CI: 1.29–1.54), and experience of physical violence within the family (AOR: 1.43; 95% CI: 1.29–1.59). The R-square value 0f 0.026indicate that the model explain 2,6% of variance in predicting smoking behaviour among student. Risky behaviours within the family contributed the most to student smoking behaviour. Family-based interventions are necessary, focusing on strengthening familial warmth, improving parental education, and preventing violence and risky behaviors within the household environment.

Abstract

Integrating writing instruction with local cultural elements is essential for improving literacy outcomes that resonate with students' lived experiences and cultural identities. However, field observations reveal that such integration remains underutilized in many educational contexts, including at SD Negeri Dinoyo 2 Malang, East Java—a school situated in a region known for its ceramic industry. This classroom action research aimed to enhance students' writing skills using the culturally rooted strategy titled "Dinoyo Ceramics and I." Conducted over two cycles with 25 students from Class 5A, the study began by introducing students to Dinoyo ceramic products through physical artifacts and visual media showcasing their historical significance. Students were then encouraged to describe these items in terms of their appeal, function, and value as souvenirs or treasured objects. Based on this exposure, students generated writing ideas under the theme "Dinoyo Ceramics and I," which they first organized into outlines and then developed into full compositions. In the second cycle, imaginative elements were incorporated to enrich the outlines, and students were guided to present each idea in a well-structured paragraph. This approach enabled students to creatively weave personal experiences into compelling narratives that retained Dinoyo ceramics as a central motif. The strategy sparked greater engagement, as students connected deeply with a topic rooted in their cultural environment. The findings highlight the importance of recognizing students’ everyday experiences as meaningful content for writing. Thus, educators should consider incorporating local cultural themes into writing instruction to build more relevant, motivating, and expressive learning experiences.
