Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has driven an increase in the utilization of online food ordering services in Indonesia, particularly among young adults, who constitute 45% of the users. This trend presents nutritional challenges that necessitate intervention through digital media education. Podcasts are regarded as effective and accessible educational mediums; however, previous studies have primarily focused on their impact on knowledge and attitudes. This quasi-experimental study aimed to analyze the influence of podcast-based nutrition education on improving nutritional knowledge and altering online food ordering intentions, frequency of orders, and food choices. This study employed a pretest-posttest control group design involving 128 non-health students from Muhammadiyah University of Semarang (December 2024 to March 2025), divided equally into experimental and control groups. The experimental group received four podcast episodes, each under 10 minutes, over four weeks, whereas the control group received no intervention. Data were collected through pre- and post-test assessments and engagement evidence, with purposive sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data analysis using the Mann-Whitney U test revealed significant improvements in nutritional knowledge (p < 0,001), changes in ordering intentions aligned with the Theory of Planned Behavior constructs (p < 0,001), decreased ordering frequency (p < 0,001), and healthier food choices (p < 0,001). In conclusion, the findings suggest that podcasts have the potential to be an innovative strategy in nutrition education to promote healthy eating habits in the digital era.

Abstract

Traditional foods are foods consumed by a certain ethnic group in a specific region. The habit of consuming traditional foods is usually inherited by the family members, including toddlers, of a respective generation. The study aimed to determine relationship of maternal knowledge, attitude, and practices in traditional food feeding with stunting and wasting of toddlers in the farmer families of the Central Bengkulu District. This study employed a cross-sectional design with a sample of mothers with children aged 12–59 months. The sample included a total of 115 farmer families. Data on nutritional knowledge, attitude, practices about traditional food, sex of children, and the number of family members were collected via interviews conducted with the mothers; stunting and wasting status data were collected via height and weight measurements. Data were analyzed bivariately using the chi-square test. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was also used in this study. It was found that there was a relationship between nutritional knowledge of traditional food and nutritional status of weight-for-age (p-value = 0.031), and there was a correlation between nutritional practices of traditional food and wasting incidence (p-value = 0.012). According to the height-for-age index, the nutritional status was related to the maternal knowledge of traditional food, whereas the maternal nutritional practice with traditional food had a significant relationship with the weight-for-age index.

Abstract

Ultraviolet B sunlight exposure is a primary source of vitamin D, but women of childbearing age who worked in room every day had low serum vitamin D despite Indonesia is a tropical country. The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of sun exposure in women of childbearing age on vitamin D status, and blood pressure. An intervention before-after study without group control was conducted on 21 healthy women. This study compared vitamin D status, and blood pressure before and after receiving ultraviolet B (UVB) from sun exposure on the face and both arms three times a week for 12 weeks. Anthropometric parameter and blood pressure were measured, were determined at baseline and after 12 weeks of sun exposure. The effect of sun exposure can improve vitamin D. Serum 25 (OH)D increase 15.9% from 15.7 ng/dL to 18.2 ng/dL. Sun exposure significantly reduced systolic blood pressure (p value = 0.004), and diastolic blood pressure (p value = 0.011). Ultraviolet B from sun exposure for 30 minutes, 3 times a week for 12 weeks improves the vitamin D status, and blood pressure.

Abstract

Introduction: Double malnutrition has become a major nutritional concern among elementary school children, potentially impairing growth, development, and academic performance. This study aims to analyze the implementation of balanced nutrition and nutritional status in school-age children. Methods: A cross-sectional design was applied from November – December 2024 at SDIT Plus Mutiara Umat (private school) and SDN 1 Wiroditan (public school), Pekalongan Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. A total of 140 students (70 from each school) were selected through simple random sampling. Data collection included self-administered questionnaires, 24-hour food recall, Individual Dietary Diversity Score (IDDS), and anthropometric measurements. Statistical analyses were performed using the independent t-test for normally distributed data and the Mann–Whitney test for non-normal distributions. Results: Most parents in private school have completed college education (58.6%) while in public school only completed high school education (48.6%). Most subjects in private school had lower pocket money than in public schoolObesity prevalence was higher in private schools (15.7%), while underweight was more frequent in public schools (8.6%). Most respondents exhibited moderate nutritional knowledge (private: 68.6%; public: 77.1%) and negative nutritional attitudes (private: 88.6%; public: 94.3%). Moderate dietary diversity was observed in both groups. Public school students showed significantly higher energy, fat, and carbohydrate intakes (p < 0.05). Significant differences were also found in pocket money, maternal education, nutritional status, and attitude (p < 0.05). Conclusion: This study contributes provides information to the community regarding balanced nutrition and the nutritional status of school-aged children. The findings of this research can serve as a reference for schools in promoting the implementation of balanced nutrition and for government may be used as a source of literature in development of programs aimed at achieving normal nutritional status among children.

Abstract

Feeding globally is considered a critical challenge for sustainable development, hence, protein, energy, and adequate micronutrients must be sustainably available to alleviate many community problems. In some parts of Indonesia, such as Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, approximately 60% of people consume protein less than the adequacy level. Therefore, this study aimed to identify halal status of edible insects as a forgotten-fringe food to obtain a potential alternative source of protein-rich food in the future. The goal was to cover households with lower-middle income in fulfilling protein requirements, specifically in food-insecure areas. The results showed that six edible insects were identified as a forgotten indigenous protein source. These insects were forgotten majorly due to taste (yuck), allergies, inferior quality, complicated processing methods, and confusion over halal status. However, the identified forgotten foods had the potential to cover the insecurity condition in Gunungkidul. This might help poor households increase protein intake since often those forgotten foods are cheap and hunted freely.

Abstract

This research was aimed at analyzing indicator of early adolescent quality and factors affecting the early adolescent quality (EAQ). The study tried to create EAQ index and to analyze its effect to academic achievement. EAQ was measured by body mass index (physical dimension), intelligent quotient and emotional intelligent (nonphysical dimension). The index could show the different quality among public and private school. A crosssectional study was applied on this study. The location were purposively selected at five subdistricts, i.e., Purwokerto, Baturaden, Ajibarang, Rawalo, and Sumpiuh. Total samples of the study were 300 students of secondary school and their families. The sample were divided into public school samples (150 students) and private school samples (150 students). The study created the EAQ categorized in four category, i.e., high (7,7%), medium (71,3%), low (20,7%), and very low (0,3%). The study described that both student (public and private school) have significant differences on EAQ, academic achievement, school environment. Yet, the study found no significant differences of home environment between public and private school samples. The public school amples had the better EAQ, academic achievement, and school environment  than the private school samples. The regression analysis showed that home and school environment, education investment factors affected EAQ. Academic achievement was influenced by EAQ, parent’s control on student time, school condition, student activity involvement, family monetary investment, year of schooling of mother, and student expectation.
