Abstract

Coagulation-flocculation wastewater treatment is widely used because the process is simple to facilitate the sedimentation process. The coagulation-flocculation process aims to alter very small colloidal particles (smaller than 10-3) into larger particles using synthetic or natural materials. The synthetic material is preferred because it does not need to adjust the pH of the media; only small quantities required (from 1-5 ppm), the floc formed is larger, stronger, and has better settling properties. However, it has many shortcomings, including nonbiodegradable, neurotoxic, and carcinogenic properties. Gelatin can be used as an alternative bioflocculant because it has a dual function in the coagulation and flocculation processes. The gelatin production is obtained by utilizing the bone waste of catfish (Clarias batrachus) using the acid method. This study aimed to design gelatin flocculant from catfish bone waste by specifying the intended characteristics such as pH, molecular weight (Mv), non-toxic, and insoluble in neutral pH and determining the effectiveness in purifying water. The method coveredthe production of gelatin using the acid method, determining the properties of gelatin flocculants, performing test of the effectiveness for water purification using the jar test, and calculate the cost. The results showed that gelatin flocculant met the criteria for flocculants with a pH of 5.2, Mv value of 302.648 g/mol, and non-toxic insoluble in neutral pH. The jar test results showed that the administration of a gelatin flocculant dose of 40 mg/L at pH 5.5 was able to reduce the turbidity of the artificial waste from 100 NTU to 28 NTU with a turbidity removal value of 72% with estimated cost of treatment of Rp 4,000 /m3.Keywords: catfish bone waste, flocculation, gelatin flocculant, jar test, molecular weight

Abstract

Milk is food from livestock (animal) from dairy cows which contains protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals that can affect nutritional levels, especially in children during their growth period. The high interest in milk consumption in Indonesia affects the milk processing industry to increase every year. Starting from smallholder farms, milk can be processed into dairy products that are suitable for consumption by the community. The process of processing whole milk into dairy products that are ready to be consumed through a process that produces emissions, so that it has the potential to have an impact on the environment. The purpose of this study is to identify and quantify the materials and energy used, the amount of emissions produced from the milk production process, and estimate the magnitude of the impact on the environment and provide recommendations for alternative process improvements to minimize these impacts. The method used is a life cycle assessment (LCA) with a cradle to gate scope, starting from activities in livestock, animal feed, transportation, and process activities in cooperatives. The emission impacts studied in this study are greenhouse gases (GHG), acidification, and eutrophication. The case study was conducted at the South Bandung Dairy Cooperative (KPBS) Pangalengan. This cooperative consists of thousands of small-scale dairy farmers who contribute to the milk processing industry in Indonesia. Based on the results of the study, the impact values of GHG, acidification, and eutrophication per 1 kg of milk were 10,1 kg CO2 eq, 0.03 kg SO2 eq, and 0.03 kg PO43-eq, respectively. Transportation and activities on livestock are the highest hotspots in these emissions. Efforts to reduce environmental impacts that can be done are by implementing an integrated livestock system for the utilization of nutrients from cow dung waste. Keywords: acidification, eutrophication, fresh milk, greenhouse gases, LCA

Abstract

This article discusses the environmental assessment caused by the commercial use of groundwater by the community as landowners. In the future, this practice must receive direction and responsibility from the government as policymakers to prevent and repair environmental damage, especially habitat damage and species in strengthening the principle of "paying for commercial groundwater" with the REA methodology to assess and compensate for environmental damage. This method, developed by the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), uses the scale of remediation required to compensate for past, current and future damage. The compensation approaches are the services approach (or the resources approach) and the valuation approach (the value-to-value and value-to-cost approach). The results show that the change in residential land is 0.16%, or 25 ha. The total area of changed settlement/land built up has decreased the function of land which was originally secondary/logged-over dry land forest to become settlement/land built up. Furthermore, there was a decrease in secondary/logged-over dry land forest to open field of 0.03% or 3.1 ha, so that the total area of secondary/logged-over dry land forest decreased by 0.19% or 28.1 ha.

Abstract

Gebang 2 Elementary School is a remote school in Sidoarjo which is located in Pucukan Hamlet, Sidoarjo District. The school is called remote because the path taken is a narrow road, and can only be passed by motorbike. If it rains, the road to the location is impassable, due to puddles of water and mud. However, it is also possible to cross the waterway by using a boat with about 45 minutes of travel. In this school it is difficult to access the internet network, so it is not possible to do online school during the pandemic. As a result, students and teachers continue to hold face-to-face meetings, with a one-week system of meeting and one week off. The school also does not have extracurriculars for its students, and the school building is only made of wood which is often flooded. This article is the result of research that initiated the Stikosa-AWS students community service program, in the form of developing non-academic education through extracurricular programs. In addition, students also donated items in the form of cleaning equipment for the Gebang 2 Elementary School which was poorly maintained. And donate book packages that are still fit for use.
