Abstract

This community service activity was motivated by the limited competence of high school mathematics teachers in developing test instruments as a strategy for mathematics learning based on problem solving and numerical literacy. In addition, teachers’ creativity in designing learning tools—particularly test instruments aligned with teaching modules and student worksheets (LKPD) based on problem solving and numerical literacy—remains low. Therefore, this training program was designed to enhance teachers’ competence and creativity in developing test instruments as part of effective learning strategies, especially those integrated with problem solving and numerical literacy-oriented teaching modules and LKPD. The methods employed in this program include lectures, interactive discussions, and hands-on training. The lecture method was used to deliver theoretical concepts related to test instruments that align with problem solving and numerical literacy-based modules and LKPD. The training method involved participants directly in the process of designing and developing learning strategies. Meanwhile, the dialogic method was implemented to address challenges encountered by participants during the training sessions. The target participants of this program were high school mathematics teachers in North Aceh. The training provided significant benefits, particularly in improving teachers’ competence and creativity in developing effective mathematics learning tools.

Abstract

Despite extensive scholarship on female mourning practices (iḥdād), male mourning within Islamic legal and gender studies is largely overlooked, creating a significant gap in understanding how widowers manage grief culturally and religiously. This study focuses on the neglected male mourning practices in Islamic contexts and how widowers navigate their grief. Through a qualitative method involving in-depth interviews with five widowers, alongside observations and document analysis (in the form of local prayer books, memorial schedules, and religious guidance texts), the data was thematically analyzed using the Braun and Clarke framework, combined with phenomenological insights to uncover emotional and ethical patterns. The findings indicate that widowers engage in ethical negotiations—such as postponing remarriage and avoiding social gatherings—that reflect an interplay between Islamic teachings and Javanese cultural norms. This research suggests that the Qira'ah Mubādalah perspective offers a valuable interpretive framework that situates these mourning practices within a context of reciprocal ethics rooted in spirituality, which has broader implications for gender ethics in contemporary Islamic discourse.

Abstract

Highlights: 1. This study was the first in Gresik, Indonesia, to conduct mass screening of tuberculosis among waste workers, comprising various demographic profiles. 2. Although the tuberculosis screening of the waste workers showed negative results, mass examination using an acid-fast bacilli smear remains crucial to detect latent infections and prevent transmissions. Abstract Tuberculosis is a major source of illness and mortality worldwide. Therefore, tuberculosis screening is important to increase the number of active case-finding in a community. Bacteriological examinations can be used to initiate community-based active case-finding. Waste workers face a high risk of contracting Mycobacterium tuberculosis due to their constant exposure to waste. This study aimed to conduct bacteriological examinations to identify tuberculosis infections among waste workers in Gresik, Indonesia, who were considered a high-risk group. An analytical observational study was carried out throughout September 2023 in the Ngipik subdistrict, Gresik, East Java, Indonesia. The primary study was conducted using a cross-sectional design using interviews, measurements, and sputum examinations for all samples. The screening involved a total of 72 waste workers who had daily contact with various types of sewage and waste, including medical waste. The data were analyzed descriptively because of the constant variable. Following the analysis, the data were presented using a table and a figure. According to the acid-fast bacilli examinations, all of the samples yielded negative results. Nevertheless, this study concludes that it is imperative to carry out mass tuberculosis screening in various settings, specifically among those with a high risk. Mass screening can uncover the potential of latent tuberculosis and, thus, reduce its transmission.

Abstract

This study examines the progressive Islamic hermeneutics of Fazlur Rahman and Khaled M. Abou El Fadl, focusing on their methodologies in interpreting the Qur'an. The background highlights the necessity for contemporary Islamic thought to address modern challenges while remaining rooted in authentic tradition. The research objectives are to compare and contrast Rahman's and Abou El Fadl's interpretative frameworks, identifying key similarities and differences in their approaches. Using a comparative analysis methodology, this research delves into their respective hermeneutical principles, the socio-historical context of their interpretations, and the application of their processes to specific Qur'anic texts. The results showed that both scholars emphasize contextual understanding and ethical considerations; Rahman advocates a double movement theory and historical contextualization, whereas Abou El Fadl focuses on the moral trajectory of the text and interpretive pluralism. The conclusion suggests that integrating the insights from both methodologies can offer a more nuanced and adaptable approach to contemporary Qur'anic interpretation, contributing significantly to progressive Islamic thought.

Abstract

This article examines how contemporary Islamic family law regulates arbitrary divorce and evaluates the extent to which such regulation operationalizes maqāṣid al-sharīʿah, particularly as conceptualized by Jamāl al-Dīn ʿAṭiyyah. Arbitrary divorce is understood as unilateral marital dissolution that occurs without adequate judicial oversight, substantive justification, or fair compensation, resulting in harm to women and children. The study asks how different legal systems constrain or reproduce arbitrary divorce and which regulatory model most effectively realizes substantive justice. Employing a qualitative and comparative method, the research analyzes statutory regulations, judicial structures, and doctrinal frameworks governing divorce in Indonesia, Iran, and Algeria as material objects of study. The findings demonstrate three distinct regulatory patterns. Indonesia adopts a procedural model that formally judicializes divorce but fails to prevent substantive injustice due to weak enforcement and partial protection of women’s financial and custodial rights. Iran reflects an administrative–doctrinal model that retains significant male prerogatives while introducing limited compensatory mechanisms. In contrast, Algeria represents a substantive maqāṣid-oriented model in which expanded judicial authority, mandatory reconciliation, and compensation for harm effectively constrain unilateral divorce and promote financial justice and child welfare. The study concludes that effective regulation of arbitrary divorce depends not on procedural formality alone but on the institutional capacity to translate ethical objectives into enforceable outcomes. This maqāṣid-based typology contributes to Islamic family law scholarship by offering a comparative framework for evaluating justice-oriented legal reform.

Abstract

This study investigates how the Islamic legal obligation of nafkah, or spousal financial support, is reinterpreted in Muslim families in Indonesia through the lens of maqāṣid al-usrah. It aims to explore how gender dynamics, legal consciousness, and economic realities reshape the meaning and practice of nafkah beyond traditional legal prescriptions. Employing a qualitative socio-legal method, the research integrates doctrinal analysis with empirical insights drawn from in-depth interviews with seven female Muslim scholars from pesantren-based and higher education academic communities in East Java. Thematic analysis based on the principles of maqāṣid al-usrah reveals that while formal Islamic law defines nafkah as a unilateral male duty, lived experiences reflect a more collaborative and ethically responsive understanding. Informants demonstrate that financial responsibilities are frequently negotiated based on capability, mutual trust, and emotional stability, embodying values such as justice, compassion, and shared responsibility. The study further highlights how socio-cultural norms and internal religious reasoning influence women’s choices to either uphold or pragmatically reinterpret nafkah obligations. These findings underscore the relevance of maqāṣid-based approaches in bridging doctrinal ideals with everyday realities, offering a pathway for reforming Islamic family law toward greater gender equity and contextual sensitivity.

Abstract

This study examines the reconstruction of nusyuz through the framework of maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah in response to domestic violence against women in Indonesia. The research addresses three questions: how nusyuz is defined in classical fiqh and Indonesian statutory law, which Islamic legal principles support women’s right to safety and resistance to harm, and how maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah can be operationalized to produce a more just interpretation. Employing a normative legal research method, the study is based on qualitative library research. Data were obtained from primary legal sources, including classical fiqh texts, Qur’anic exegesis of QS 4:34, and Indonesian family law regulations—particularly the Kompilasi Hukum Islam—as well as secondary sources such as peer-reviewed journal articles on domestic violence, gender justice, and Islamic legal reform. The analysis was conducted through three stages: doctrinal analysis to map prevailing definitions of nusyuz; contextual-hermeneutical analysis to relate these doctrines to Indonesian socio-legal realities and judicial practices; and maqāṣid-based evaluation using ḥifẓ al-nafs, protection of dignity, and the principle of dar’ al-mafāsid as analytical benchmarks. The findings show that classical and statutory constructions of nusyuz are often shaped by patriarchal assumptions and inadequately distinguish disobedience from self-protection. This study concludes that acts undertaken by wives to protect themselves from harm cannot be classified as nusyuz, and that marital obligations must be understood as reciprocal. By operationalizing maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah as an analytical tool, this research offers a context-sensitive and doctrinally grounded framework for strengthening women’s legal safeguards in Islamic family law.
