Abstract

This study is mainly intended to find out the extent to which tasks in English work books are designed to develop the students? communicative competence. The objective of this study is to describe how the tasks in Edukatif work books are designed to develop students? discourse competence, linguistic competence, actional competence, sociolinguistic competence, and strategic competence. This study is a qualitative research which involves content analysis approach. The data are the tasks in Edukatif work books used by eight grade students of the first and second semester. In collecting the data, the writer uses documentation method. The data analysis used Huberman and Miles? concept which involves data reduction, data display and verification. The findings show that among the five competences and its components of communicative com- petence, some components are not well developed in the work books. The tasks develop all components of discourse competence except one aspect in linguistic competence, that is, phonology. The tasks develop all components of actional competence except the speech act. The tasks develop components of sociolinguistic competence except the cultural and non-verbal communicative factor. The tasks develop only one component of strategic competence, that is, time gaining strategy. The conclusion is that the tasks in Edukatif work books are sufficient to develop the students? discourse, linguistic, and actional competence. The tasks, however, are not sufficient to develop students? sociolinguistic and strategic competence.

Abstract

The current study concerns learning strategy and its relation to interlanguage  errors as Selinker believes that interlanguage errors are the result of cognitive mechanism or learning strategy used by second language learner. This specifically tries to describe the learning strategy used by the learners which result in interlanguage errors. The data are in the form of sentences containing errors taken from students? compositions. The technique used to collect the data is elicitation and documentation. The data were analyzed qualitatively. The result of the research indicates that there are three major types of learning strategy used by the learners, namely: overgeneralization, first language transfer, and simplification and the dominant learning strategy is overgeneralization. This implies that the students have relied more on their linguistic knowledge on the target language (English) rather than on that of their first language. The pedagogical implication is that English teachers should have positive attitude on interlanguage errors since errors are inevitable process in foreign language learning. They must also provide appropriate training so that students are aware the differences between English and Indonesian. Such an understanding may help them eliminate the interlanguage errors and develop their interlanguage system.

Abstract

The English of Senior High Schhol students in Indonesia is quite interesting to studybecause it contanis a significant number of errors, especially in the writing of a noun phrase. This phenomenon shows that the English used contains Interlanguage. Selinker states thatInterlanguage has its own linguistic system. This study aims to describe and explain thelinguistic system of noun phrase in the leaners’ interlanguage as well as factors that contributeto the formation of the noun phrase. The subjects of this study were 40 students of SMAMuhammadiyah Surakarta II Class X. The data were collected through elicitation technique, thestudents were asked to write free composition. Data were analyzed using framework of erroranalysis which includes four stages: elicitation, identification, description and explanation orinterpretation. The results of the data analysis indicate seven noun phrase patterns as follows:(1) the use of mother tongue (Indonesian), (2) the use of combination of Indonesian and English,(3) the use of cognate, (4) the use of the Arabic already naturalized into Indonesian, (5) theexistence of miscollocation, (6) the use of false friend, and (7) the use of infinitive verbs insteadof Verb-ing. With regards to factors that contribute to the formation of the noun phrase, theresults show that these are due to the following factors: (1) muilingualism of the Englishlearners, (2) the gap between the Indonesian vocabulary repertoire and English, (3) theutilization of the previous lerned languages (Indonesia, Arabic) in their English expressions, and (4) the lack of control of the structure of the English noun phrase. Keywords: noun phrases, noun phrase patterns, factors which contribute to the formation ofnoun phrases

Abstract

In order to facilitate English pre-service teachers to have ability in integrating technology in the classroom, microteaching is one of teaching strategy solutions. This present study examines how microteaching was used as teaching strategy of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) for English pre-service teacher. It is case study design. The setting of this study was in one of Islamic State University in Indonesia, in the English Education Department. The data are from interview, document analysis, and observation. The result shows that the teaching strategies of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) which was a microteaching consisted of lesson planning, teaching, and evaluating. Lesson planning and teaching step were done by the English pre-service teacher. Yet, the evaluating step was done by the lecturer and peer pre-service teachers. The significance of this study is for example on how to implement microteaching of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) to English pre-service teachers.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Interlanguage errors are an inevitable sign of human fallibility; therefore, they always exist in foreign language learning. They are very significant since they become the source for studying the system of the learners’ second language (interlanguage). As a language system, interlanguage has at least three prominent characteristics, namely, systematicity, permeability, and fossilization. Applied linguistic researchers are no longer in disagreement with the view that interlanguage is systematic and permeable. However, the premise that interlanguage is fossilized is still debatable. This study deals with interlanguage errors; in particular, this tries to investigate whether the learners’ grammatical errors are fossilized (in a sense that they are dynamic) or static. For this purpose, an empirical study was conducted, using an error treatment method. This study used Indonesian senior high school students learning English as the research subjects. The data were collected from the students’ free compositions written prior and after an error treatment. The error treatment was carried out for one semester. The data were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative method. The result indicates that the learners’ grammatical errors were dynamic. At a certain period of the learning course, some grammatical errors emerged. As a result of the error treatment, some errors were fluctuating; some became stabilized; while others were destabilized. The fluctuating errors tended to be destabilized while the stabilized errors were also likely to be destabilized. Error treatment was proved to have significant contribution to the destabilization process; that is to say, it helped develop the learners’ IL system. A conclusion drawn from this study is that the learners’ grammatical errors are dynamic. They are destabilzable. Thus, there is a possibility for the learners to acquire complete target language grammar. Key Words: error treatment, stabilization, fossilization, dynamicity, interlanguage

Abstract

English compositions written by Indonesian EFL students contain erroneous sentences which portray learner language. The errors are neither of their native language nor the target language, but containing linguistic system from both. This is called an interlanguage. This study focuses on one of interlanguage features, that is, permeability, meaning the susceptibility of interlanguages to infiltration by first language and target language rules or forms. It aims to provide empirical evidence of the permeability of the students’ interlanguage production by describing the types and degree of the native and target language influence and explaining the possible causes of the influences. The data were 264 ill-formed sentences elicited from their English free compositions. Error analysis and interlanguage analysis were used as framework for collecting, identifying, describing, and explaining the data. The results indicate that their interlanguage production was influenced by their native language and the target language at both lexical and syntactical level. The dominant native language influence was on vocabulary (i.e. Indonesian borrowings) and the target language influence was on grammar (i.e. verb tenses). The native language influence had a little lower frequency compared with that of the target language. The main source of the influence was their possession of two language systems in their mind was activated regardless of their intention to use one language only. The native language influence was due to the good mastery of the native language and the limited knowledge of the target language. The target language influence was due to the learning strategy used.

Abstract

This article analyses refusal strategies applied by American speakers of English and Indonesian students of English as a foreign language. This study is descriptive qualitative research. Twenty participants contributed in this study. Furthermore, the data were gathered from Discourse Completion Test and interview. In order to get trustworthiness of the data, source of triangulation, member checking and external audit were applied. Then, Miles and Huberman?s flowchart was used to analyze the data. The result show that: (1) both of the groups use fourteen refusal strategies namely direct no, inability, avoidance, hedging, excuse, wish, statement of alternative, promise of future acceptance, statement of regret, acceptance that function as refusal, set condition for past acceptance, gratitude/appreciation, pause fillers and statement of positive feeling/opinion; (2) some similarities and differences of strategies were found being used by both groups. Eleven strategies were found to be similar, namely, direct no, inability, postponement, excuse, statement of alternative, statement of regret, wish, lack of enthusiasm, gratitude/appreciation, pause fillers and statement of positive feeling. Meanwhile, the different refusal strategies used by those groups were hedging, promise of future acceptance and set condition for past acceptance.
