Abstract

This study evaluates how teacher questions influence active participation and engagement in non-formal EFL speaking classes. The objective is to determine the effectiveness of different question types in promoting student interaction and improving language learning. A qualitative case study design was employed in two classes at a private English course in Madiun, Indonesia, involving 2 English teachers and 24 elementary students with basic to lower-intermediate proficiency. Data were collected during 3 months (December-February) through classroom observations, digital audio recordings, field notes, and semi-structured interviews with both teachers and students. The analysis focused on categorizing teacher questions into display/closed-ended, yes/no, and referential/open-ended types, and examining the effect on individual and choral student responses. Findings indicate that display/closed-ended and yes/no questions effectively stimulate immediate recall and maintain classroom focus, while referential/open-ended questions encourage deeper cognitive engagement and personalized expression. The results suggest that a balanced approach to questioning not only stimulates immediate recall but also transforms passive learners into active participants, improving students’ communication competence. It also implies that the teacher should have more variations such as combine three kinds of those questions for engaging students to have an active participation through questions.

Abstract

Recent phenomena indicate a decline in students’ interest in appreciating cultural arts, particularly through national songs, due to the dominance of foreign popular culture and the lack of learning innovation in schools. This situation reduces the internalization of national values and weakens student engagement in cultural arts education. This study aims to analyze the application of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) in cultural arts subjects by employing national songs as a learning medium. A descriptive qualitative design was used with one cultural arts teacher and 32 grade XI students of SMA Negeri 1 Colomadu as research participants. Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis, then analyzed using a thematic approach to identify patterns, relevance, and effectiveness. The findings reveal that CTL based on national songs successfully increases students’ learning motivation, strengthens their emotional connection with the material, and fosters awareness of national values. Teachers also reported greater creativity in designing meaningful and contextual strategies. The study concludes that integrating CTL with national songs not only improves cultural arts learning but also revitalizes students’ character building and national identity. The contribution of this research lies in enriching the theoretical discourse on CTL integration in cultural arts and offering a practical model that addresses the challenges of globalization while strengthening love for the homeland.

Abstract

This study explores how classroom tasks enhance students’ communicative competence in an English for Receptionists training program using Project-Based Learning (PJBL). By incorporating role-playing, simulations, and task-based interactions reflecting real-life scenarios such as guest greetings, check-ins, complaint handling, and local knowledge sharing, the program aims to develop four components of communicative competence: grammatical, sociolinguistic, discourse, and strategic. A qualitative case study approach was employed, with data collected through classroom observations, interviews, and document analysis, then analyzed thematically. Findings show that tailored classroom tasks improve students’ ability to use appropriate grammar and vocabulary, adjust communication to social contexts, organize coherent responses, and employ strategies to overcome communication barriers. The study highlights the critical role of classroom tasks in bridging the gap between theoretical learning and professional demands, offering practical insights for educators to design effective ESP curricula tailored to the hospitality sector.

Abstract

The research entitled Interlanguage Analysis of the Vocational School Students of SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Surakarta aims to describe the interlanguage of tenth-grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Surakarta through an analysis of linguistic errors found in students’ writing. The background of this research is derived from the students’ low writing proficiency, which is influenced by their first language, limited mastery of grammatical structures, and inconsistent application of target language rules. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method with data consisting of students’ written texts collected from classroom assignments. The data were analysed to identify forms of interlanguage, the sources of their occurrence, and the relationship between these errors and the students’ language development stages. The findings show that students produce various interlanguage features, particularly in the use of verb forms, tenses, prepositions, and sentence structure. These errors are influenced by first language transfer, overgeneralization, simplification, and learning strategies. The results indicate that the students’ interlanguage is still in an unstable developmental stage and requiring continuous guidance. This study concluded that interlanguage analysis is essential for understanding students’ language development and for helping teachers design more effective instructional strategies.

Abstract

Problem-solving skills and Computational Thinking (CT) are very important skills in today's digital era. Improving the ability of CT mathematics education students is becoming increasingly important as the need for skills develops in the 21st century. Project-based learning (PBL) has been shown to be effective in improving these skills. However, the limited research examining the impact of PBL with Delphi software on computational thinking skills in mathematics education encourages the need for further research. This study aims to explore the impact of project-based learning with Delphi on improving students' computational thinking skills. This type of research is a quantitative research with a quasi-experimental design. The population is 6th semester students of mathematics education. The sample consisted of two classes totaling 40 students. The results of the T test showed that the experimental group showed a significant improvement compared to the control group (t = 4,102, p < 0.05). The implications of this research are important for the development of a technology-based mathematics education curriculum. It is recommended for further research with a larger sample of different institutions to explore the long-term impact as well as other factors that may affect project-based learning outcomes.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how certain teaching methods to improve reading comprehension skills of EFL students at the Faculty of Education Champasack University. However, empirical evidence on the impact of instructional reading strategies on EFL students’ reading comprehension and learner perceptions in Lao university contexts remains limited. The use of specific selection of teaching methods, such as explicit strategy instruction and collaborative reading activities, creates the command of students to use strategies at different levels of reading comprehension. The study involved 25 final-year EFL students and 5 lecturers who were purposefully sampled. The data were collected using the following methods and instruments: open-ended questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, pre-test and post-tests, classroom observations, and reading comprehension tests. The qualitative component of the study involved thematic analysis of the participants’ perceptions and classroom interactions, which provided triangulation for the study. The analysis of the data indicated that the reading comprehension instructional strategies had the most impact on the students’ ability to comprehend text at the literal and inferential levels, i.e. identifying the main ideas, supporting details, and making simple inferences. There was limited improvement in the students’ critical reading and advanced strategic behaviors, which demonstrated the need for extended and continued training to improve comprehension at the higher levels. The most important findings of the study also demonstrated the positive impact that structured and strategy-based instruction (SBI) has on EFL students’ reading comprehension. This research contributes important implications for EFL teaching in higher education which indicated the need for constant integration of strategy-focused and student-centered reading instruction.

Abstract

The need for preparing highly qualified teachers with all the quintessential pedagogical competencies has been acknowledged as a preeminent priority in the educational world. This present study is intended to scrutinize the EFL teachers’ perspectives and preferences in the 21st century pedagogical competence. The study was qualitatively conducted as a case study to retrieve a reputable understanding of the phenomenon. A semi-structured interview and a five-Likert scale questionnaire were used to collect the necessary data. The data of this study were taken from the purposively chosen informants regarding their familiarity and apprehension with the issue of this study. The results demonstrated that the teachers perceived the rapid development of technology and information as the key feature of the 21st-century learning, which is beneficial to furnish more comprehensive learning. Moreover, they predominantly conceived that the term 21st-century pedagogical competence focused on how teachers assimilate technology in the classroom and how to facilitate the students’ creativity due to the widely opened sources of information which positively affect students’ proficiency. It is suggested to consecutively provide more courses and training about confronting the 21st-century education to keep teachers voguish of any adjustments, innovations, and modifications in education.

Abstract

The "native speaker" ideal has long dominated English language teaching, reinforcing hierarchies of linguistic legitimacy and authority. Yet, as education in Indonesia rapidly shifts toward digital platforms, the urgency to reexamine this ideology becomes critical. In a post-pandemic context where online English learning has redefined interaction, identity, and pedagogy, this study deconstructs the persistence of the native-speaker norm in Indonesian digital classrooms through a postmodern narrative inquiry at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS). Drawing on Derrida's deconstruction and Lyotard's critique of metanarratives, it interrogates how teachers and students narrate their identities, anxieties, and negotiations within virtual learning environments. Findings reveal that native-speakerism is both reproduced and destabilized in digital classrooms. Online interaction dissolves the rigid binary between native and non-native English users, highlighting fluid, hybrid, and localized Englishes. Participants negotiate authority, identity, and legitimacy in ways that challenge traditional linguistic hierarchies. The study contributes at multiple levels: theoretically, by extending postmodern thought into digital ELT; pedagogically, by advocating for decolonized and inclusive practices; and socially, by positioning Indonesian classrooms as spaces of epistemic resistance where meaning and identity remain dynamic and unfinished.

Abstract

The implementation of the independent curriculum at the elementary school level through the implementation of the project of strengthening the profile of Pancasila students (P-5) requires schools to apply character values as they should. However, elementary schools do not yet fully understand the concept of character values conveyed by Muslim figures and their implementation in schools. This research aims to describe character education according to Al-Ghazali and the implementation of character education in schools. This research method is done qualitatively by means of literature study and descriptive study through learning observation at school and interviews with teachers. The collected data was then analyzed qualitatively with the stages of reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. The results show that the character education carried out at Semai Elementary School is in accordance with the moral values conveyed by Al-Ghazali in the aspects of moral education, methods of moral formation, and character values that emerge such as having faith and good character, independence, critical reasoning, creative, mutual cooperation and global diversity.
