Abstract

Self-repair is one of the language learning strategies of second language learners that are distinctly different from each other. This study aims to investigate the use of repetition as self-repair in academic speaking. The researcher tried to find the types of lexical elements which frequently repeated in the academic speaking and dig up the underlying reason behind the repetition as self-repair. A case study was conducted using human instruments and interviews to collect the data. Once the data filled, the researcher analyzed the data by implementing a data archive, trying to expand the codes, evaluating the data sets, and wrapping up the data. The findings from this study revealed that the participants in this study might have used English in speech situations in which they would have used recycling the mistake word. The result of the study found that the participant did indeed self-repair Type D, which consisted of repetition and replacement of one lexical item, and nouns became the most repeated lexical item in the academic speaking. This was a delay strategy as she waited to restart the speech as she needed to think about the next word so that the listeners didn't misinterpret her. Twisted tongue and slip of tongue as a result of the participant’s first language interference contributed to the repetition of certain lexical elements as self-repair.

Abstract

The English of Senior High Schhol students in Indonesia is quite interesting to studybecause it contanis a significant number of errors, especially in the writing of a noun phrase. This phenomenon shows that the English used contains Interlanguage. Selinker states thatInterlanguage has its own linguistic system. This study aims to describe and explain thelinguistic system of noun phrase in the leaners’ interlanguage as well as factors that contributeto the formation of the noun phrase. The subjects of this study were 40 students of SMAMuhammadiyah Surakarta II Class X. The data were collected through elicitation technique, thestudents were asked to write free composition. Data were analyzed using framework of erroranalysis which includes four stages: elicitation, identification, description and explanation orinterpretation. The results of the data analysis indicate seven noun phrase patterns as follows:(1) the use of mother tongue (Indonesian), (2) the use of combination of Indonesian and English,(3) the use of cognate, (4) the use of the Arabic already naturalized into Indonesian, (5) theexistence of miscollocation, (6) the use of false friend, and (7) the use of infinitive verbs insteadof Verb-ing. With regards to factors that contribute to the formation of the noun phrase, theresults show that these are due to the following factors: (1) muilingualism of the Englishlearners, (2) the gap between the Indonesian vocabulary repertoire and English, (3) theutilization of the previous lerned languages (Indonesia, Arabic) in their English expressions, and (4) the lack of control of the structure of the English noun phrase. Keywords: noun phrases, noun phrase patterns, factors which contribute to the formation ofnoun phrases

Abstract

Academic writing in higher education mainly focuses on writing for publication. The success of writing for publication depends on the learners’ ability to access, understand the relevant references, evaluate, and synthesise the ideas, opinions, and sentences to make their academic pattern. Viewed from prior studies, it seems that many EFL learners have faced various problems in writing their academic papers, specifically writing for publication. To respond to this issue, this narrative inquiry aims to investigate (1) how learners acquire their knowledge in writing for publication, (2) the difficulties they face in writing for publication, and (3) how they face those difficulties. This present study intended to dig up the experiences of two graduate students of English Education major in writing for publication. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data. Then, the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. This study shows that the participants acquired knowledge and experiences from various sources that were useful for writing their academic papers. Surprisingly, the various difficulties they faced motivated them to learn more and improve their writing skills for publication. Pedagogical and future research implications are further discussed.

Abstract

AbstractContrastive Analysis, Transfer Analysis, Error Analysis, and Interlanguage are methods used for second language learning investigation. They constitute evolutionary phases in the attempt to understand and explain the nature of the target language learners' performance. Each theory has its own view, especially in the attitude toward learners' errors and the explanatory hypotheses regarding the sources of errors. They also appear to have one goal, that is, an attempt to facilitate the process of target language learning or teaching by studying learners' errors. They are complement to one another; they constitute four phases with one goal.Contrastive analisis aims to provide teachers and/or textbook writers with information that can be utilized in the preparation of instructional materials, the planning of courses, and the development of classroom techniques. Contranstive studies are carried out in order to describe the differences between learners' native language amd the target language. They believe that it is on these differences that the learning difficulties lie, consequently errors exist. Transfer analysis is a new lebel given to contrastive analysis. Other sister terms are language transfer and crosslinguistic influence. This is an analytical tool which constitutes a sub discipline within error analysis. Its basic assumption is that certain errors in learner performance are the result of native language transfer. Error Analisis disproves the predictions of theory lying behind the comparison of native language and target language. It is an experimental technique for validating the theory of transfer. Its goal is to find out something about the psycholinguistic process of language learning. It enables us to draw a certain conclusions about the strategies used by the learner in his learning process. Interlanguage is a popular term to refer to learners' versions of the target language. It usually contains elements of both the learners' native language and target language. Interlanguage is resulted from the learner's attempts to produce the target language construction. In other words, it is the product of the second language learning process.

Abstract

What is actually involved in learning a foreign language? What kinds of knowledge and skill to be mastered? The answer to these questions deals with language competence, that is, the knowledge of the language and the ability to use that knowledge to interpret and produce meaningful texts appropriate to the situation in which they are used. It corresponds with Ellis’s (1996: 74) statement that the goal of learning a foreign language “is concerned with the ability to use language in communicative situations” and the point of language teaching is to help the students communicate or to develop what Hymes (1972) referred to as “communicative competence”.
