Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and influence of a PhET-assisted generative learning model on improving students' understanding of physics concepts. This research employed a quantitative approach utilizing a one-group pretest-posttest design. Data were collected using a concept understanding test and analyzed using the Normalized Gain (N-Gain) score to determine effectiveness, as well as a paired sample t-test to assess statistical significance. The results yielded an N-Gain value of 0.40, categorizing the improvement as moderate. Furthermore, the t-test analysis revealed a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), leading to the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis. Consequently, it can be concluded that while the PhET-assisted generative learning model significantly influences students' concept understanding, its implementation is currently classified as less effective, suggesting the need for further optimization.

Abstract

This study profiled the critical thinking disposition of early-year science education students and examined preliminary psychometric evidence of an Ennis-based questionnaire. A quantitative descriptive survey with preliminary psychometric analysis was conducted with 90 second-semester science education students from three universities in West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. Data were collected using a 36-item questionnaire organized into 12 indicators of critical thinking disposition. Negatively worded items were reverse-scored before analysis. Descriptive statistics, category distribution, indicator-based profiling, Cronbach’s alpha, corrected item-total correlation, and exploratory factor analysis based on 12 indicator scores were applied. The results showed that students’ critical thinking disposition was generally moderate, with nearly all participants located in the moderate category. The highest indicator scores were found in precision required by situation, total situation, and employing critical thinking abilities, while the lowest scores were found in clear reasons, credible sources and observations, and being well-informed. The corrected internal consistency was modest, and several negatively worded items showed weak item-total correlations. The exploratory factor analysis suggested a tentative three-factor structure: evidence-based reasoning disposition, contextual and reflective judgment, and self-regulated critical engagement. These findings indicate that students’ critical thinking disposition is still developing and that the questionnaire requires further refinement.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the validity and limited trial results of physics learning tools based on the ethnoscience-integrated Inquiry-Creative-Process (ICP) model to improve prospective physics teachers’ critical thinking skills. This research employed a development research design and produced semester learning plans and learning scenarios, teaching materials or modules, and a critical thinking test instrument. The learning tools were validated by three expert validators based on content validity and construct validity. The limited trial used a one-group pretest-posttest design involving 29 prospective physics teachers. Data were analyzed descriptively using mean scores and n-gain, and inferentially using a paired sample t-test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The validation results showed an average content validity score of 4.05 and an average construct validity score of 3.99, both categorized as valid. The limited trial results showed that the CTs score increased from 10.41 to 25.55 with an n-gain of 0.70. The average CTi score also increased from 1.30 to 3.19 with an n-gain of 0.70. The increase in CTs was significant based on the paired sample t-test, while all CTi indicators showed significant improvement based on the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. These findings indicate that physics learning tools based on the ethnoscience-integrated ICP model are valid and can improve prospective physics teachers’ critical thinking skills in a limited trial context.

Abstract

Ethnoscience has gained increasing attention in science education because it connects scientific concepts with local wisdom, cultural practices, and learners’ lived experiences. However, the inclusion of cultural contexts in science learning does not automatically lead to the development of critical thinking. This commentary discusses the integration of ethnoscience into Inquiry-Creative Learning as a pedagogical approach for strengthening the critical thinking skills of prospective science teachers. It argues that ethnoscience can be transformed from a contextual learning resource into a structured pedagogical experience when it is mediated through inquiry, creativity, evidence evaluation, and scientific reasoning. Inquiry-Creative Learning functions as a pedagogical bridge between ethnoscience and critical thinking because it enables prospective science teachers to identify culturally grounded scientific problems, generate hypotheses, design creative investigations, evaluate evidence, and communicate reasoned conclusions. At the same time, this commentary cautions against treating ethnoscience merely as a cultural illustration or assuming that local wisdom automatically promotes critical thinking. The article highlights the need for stronger conceptual framing, authentic assessment, and teacher education curricula that prepare prospective science teachers to integrate ethnoscience through inquiry, creativity, and evidence-based reasoning.

Abstract

This commentary rethinks the relationship between e-learning and face-to-face learning in higher education after the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on students’ preferences and behaviors, it argues that the future of higher education should not be framed as a choice between digital and in-person instruction. E-learning offers flexibility, accessibility, convenience, and continuity, but these benefits are insufficient when online learning lacks interaction, social presence, practical experience, and pedagogical depth. Face-to-face learning remains important because it supports direct communication, academic belonging, mentoring, and hands-on activities. However, returning fully to traditional classroom routines would ignore the valuable lessons gained from digital learning. This commentary proposes sustainable blended higher education as a more balanced direction, where online and face-to-face components are intentionally designed according to learning objectives. Universities should build human-centered, inclusive, and pedagogically coherent blended systems that preserve flexibility while strengthening interaction, engagement, equity, and educational quality across diverse student contexts and institutional conditions.

Abstract

In the context of global educational challenges, scientific literacy remains a foundational goal yet is often hindered by traditional teaching methods that lack cultural and contextual relevance. This study addresses the intersection of local wisdom with science education as a strategy to enhance students' scientific literacy, grounded in the belief that culturally resonant teaching can improve learning outcomes. This study explores the impact of integrating local wisdom into science education on enhancing students' scientific literacy. Employing an experimental pretest-posttest control group design, the research involved 86 Indonesian high school students, divided evenly between a control group receiving traditional science instruction and an experimental group whose curriculum was enriched with local wisdom content. Over a six-week period focused on climate change, the experimental group's instruction intertwined indigenous knowledge with scientific concepts, aiming to create a culturally contextualized learning experience. The results, derived from quantitative measures were analyzed using ANOVA and post hoc tests. Findings indicate a statistically significant improvement in the scientific literacy of the experimental group compared to the control group, with the former demonstrating a substantial increase in posttest scores. The study confirms that local wisdom can be a potent tool in science education, leading to higher engagement and improved scientific literacy. This research contributes to the field by providing empirical evidence supporting culturally responsive teaching approaches and underscores the potential of local wisdom in bridging the gap between traditional knowledge systems and scientific methodologies.

Science education is a cornerstone in preparing students for the complexities of the contemporary world. In this vein, the integration of Interactive Labs technology resources into science learning presents a promising avenue. This literature review delves into the expansive realm of Interactive Labs within science education, shedding light on their myriad advantages and burgeoning trends. Employing the "Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA)" methodology, the review meticulously scrutinizes pertinent articles, elucidating the transformative potential inherent in Interactive Labs, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR) technologies in the realm of science education. One of the primary revelations of this review is the manifold benefits that Interactive Labs offer. These technologies not only enhance students' attitudes towards science but also bolster their academic performance, foster critical thinking skills, and augment engagement levels. Furthermore, Interactive Labs present a cost-effective, scalable, and safe alternative to traditional laboratory settings, thereby democratizing access to hands-on scientific experimentation. Particularly noteworthy are the transformative capabilities of VR and AR technologies within the educational landscape. By immersing students in simulated environments, VR and AR facilitate experiential learning, allowing students to interact with scientific concepts in ways previously unimaginable. This immersive approach not only enhances comprehension but also kindles a sense of wonder and curiosity, vital for nurturing a lifelong passion for science. In conclusion, this literature review underscores the pivotal role that technology plays in shaping the future of science education. By equipping educators and institutions with innovative tools, such as Interactive Labs, VR, and AR, it paves the way for enriched learning experiences and contributes to the continual evolution of science education. The integration of technology promises to be instrumental in realizing the full potential of science education, thereby fostering a generation of adept and inspired scientific minds.

Abstract

The shift towards online education platforms has accelerated, highlighting the need for comprehensive evaluations of their effectiveness in delivering complex subjects like modern physics. This study aims to determine the success of students in an online modern physics course at Mataram University, focusing specifically on cognitive skills, conceptual understanding, and overall academic performance. Utilizing an experimental design, the research engaged 26 physics education students, aged 17 to 19, over a six-month academic period. The methods encompassed structured assessments through validated essay tests designed to measure distinct educational outcomes throughout the course duration. Findings reveal a broad variance in performance across measured metrics, with notable distinctions in students' abilities to grasp and apply complex physics concepts effectively. The results indicate that while online platforms can significantly enhance student learning outcomes when combined with interactive tools and effective engagement strategies, challenges such as limited hands-on experiences and variable technology access persist. These findings highlight the necessity for adaptive educational methods that cater to a diverse student body and underscore the potential of online education to extend beyond traditional classroom boundaries, enhancing learning through innovative approaches. This research contributes to the broader educational discourse by demonstrating that proactive adjustments in course design and delivery are essential to maximize the efficacy of online learning environments.

Abstract

West Nusa Tenggara is a region prone to natural disasters, requiring strategies to strengthen food security as part of efforts to build community resilience. One potential alternative is mushroom cultivation based on simple technology. This community service activity aims to introduce and implement a technologically advanced mushroom cultivation model to support food security and disaster resilience in Sembalun Bumbung Village, East Lombok. The method used was participatory training with a learning-by-doing approach, involving the local community in all stages of mushroom cultivation, from media preparation and sensor-based environmental control to harvesting and post-harvest. The results of the activity showed that most participants initially lacked knowledge of mushroom cultivation, but after the training, there was an increase in interest and understanding of the economic and consumption benefits of mushroom cultivation. The implementation of mushroom houses with technology to monitor temperature, humidity, lighting, and biogas utilization was deemed effective and easily adopted by the community. Technologically advanced mushroom cultivation has the potential to become an adaptive and sustainable local food source, thus supporting food security and community resilience in the face of natural disasters.

Abstract

This study aimed to provide biology students with a motion kinematics experimental experience using virtual PhET simulations and explore the improvement of their physics learning outcomes. Pre-experimental (pretest-posttest experimental design) was conducted in this study, pretest-posttest was carried out before and after the learning treatment, while the learning treatment was motion kinematics experiment using virtual PhET simulation. The research sample was taken purposively, they were 24 students of the Biology Education Study Program, FKIP Mataram University who took Basic Physics courses. Student learning outcomes were measured using a test instrument. Learning outcomes data were analyzed descriptively with the average score of achievement or performance of students' cognitive learning outcomes on pretest and posttest, as well as n-gain analysis. In addition, statistical analysis (Wilcoxon test) was used to determine the difference in the average score of student learning outcomes between pre-posttest (p < 0.05). The results of the descriptive analysis showed that the average score of student learning outcomes increased from pretest to posttest with successive criteria from "less" to "good," an increase in student learning outcomes with high criteria with an n-gain score of 0.71. The results of the statistical test showed that there was a significant difference in the average score of student learning outcomes before and after the motion kinematics experiment using PhET virtual simulation. The results in this study provide a learning experience related to ways of conducting physics concepts that are more meaningful in the learning process that can be widely used in routine physics teaching in the classroom.
