Abstract

As one of the essential elements in mastering the English language, grammar teaching remains a subject of debate. While the Merdeka curriculum encourages students to be more active in class and become independent learners, some teachers prefer to teach grammar in an isolated and explicit manner, while others believe in teaching grammar implicitly and within context. Given this issue, understanding teachers' beliefs about grammar is crucial to uncovering how they teach it in the classroom. This study aims to explore the teaching practices of two teachers at a reputable high school in Yogyakarta. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, the study used observation and open-ended interviews to gather data. In analyzing the data, the study applied the framework of Graus & Coppen (2016) to specify the grammar instruction strategies used by the teachers. The findings revealed that both teachers align with the goals of the Merdeka curriculum, which aims to foster independent learning by implementing various grammar instruction methods, such as Meaning-Focused Instruction that emphasizes linguistic function rather than form, Focus on Form (FonF) technique that concentrate on correcting grammar errors through student reflection rather than direct error correction, Implicit instruction which integrates grammar learning in real-life contexts, and Inductive Teaching Strategies that encourage critical thinking by having students deduce grammar rules from examples in the text rather than being explicitly taught the rules. Therefore, this study demonstrates that both teachers' methods align with the goals of the Merdeka curriculum.

Abstract

Native or non-native English-speaking academics are compelled to write scientific articles in internationally reputable indexed journals today. With high demand of academic English, more and more articles are rejected by the editorial board for various reasons, mainly in the cohesion and coherence of their writing. This research seeks to map the types and patterns of cohesive device used to support the coherence of scientific articles. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, this study compared the use of cohesion devices (CD) by both groups' writing (native & non-native) to further bridge the difficulties faced by non-native writers in shaping their academic writing cohesively and coherently. This study may also serve as a needs analysis that allows for the creation of models, materials, and teaching approaches to scientific article writing for learners of English as a foreign language.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the performance of breast-shot waterwheel with different electrical loads to increase efficiency. The method used is to design a pinwheel blade using blade material with a supporting frame added to the top, middle, and bottom of the pinwheel blade. The blade material used a thickness of 1.5 mm with angle iron installed on the three sides of the blade with a size of 30 mm × 30 mm × 3 mm. Tests were carried out with variations in lamp load when the water flow rate and water velocity were constant. Parameters measured in this test are water flow rate (m3/s), velocity of water (m/s), head of water (m), generator rotation (rpm), electric current (A), and generator output voltage (V). The results of the Hydro Power Plant (MHP) test with a waterwheel drive with the highest efficiency value at a water discharge of 0.267 m3/s, a velocity of 5.069 m/s, a generator rotation of 940 rpm, and a load of 840 W, which is 10.74%.

Abstract

In the current era, the use of corpora in language teaching is mainly explored in English classes as it has become a trend in education. Hence, this research aimed to identify the corpus metadata, frequently used words, and unique words related to the Islamic boarding school context to be used in the English instructional process. This research employed a mixed method combining quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods. Two English Islamic boarding school books, several articles covering the scope of Islamic boarding school, and students’ speech texts were selected as the data. Then, they were analyzed using the Voyant tool. The finding showed total words of 49,970: 5,417 specific words, 0.108 vocabulary density, and a 12,980-readability index. The finding will be incorporated into instructional resources for developing Islamic boarding school students' general and/or specialized vocabulary. The words, in particular, will provide a foundation for students in constructing Islamic speech texts, delivering speeches, and using English in an Islamic boarding school environment.

Abstract

This study examines 43 master's students' perceptions of ChatGPT in English language learning at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta. Using a descriptive quantitative methodology, data was gathered via questionnaires and interviews. Results show positive attitudes towards ChatGPT, with most students finding it user-friendly and beneficial for reading, writing, and cultural understanding. However, they are less confident in its ability to improve listening and speaking skills. Concerns include potential plagiarism, information leakage, and accuracy of content. Despite these issues, students find ChatGPT helpful and call for more structured guidance to enhance its integration into language learning. The study underscores the need for strategies to optimize ChatGPT’s benefits while mitigating its limitations

Abstract

This study explores students' perceptions and attitudes towards managing large classes in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at Yogyakarta State University. Using a quantitative survey approach, the research involved 45 master's students from the English Education Department. It examined aspects of classroom management such as physical environment, teacher communication, and instructional strategies. Results show overall positive views on the learning environment and teacher effectiveness but reveal challenges in experiential learning and student-teacher interaction within large classes. The findings emphasize the need for innovative teaching methods, thorough preparation, and tailored lesson plans to address the specific needs of large EFL classrooms. This research offers insights for educators and policymakers to enhance teaching and learning in similar settings

Abstract

This study investigates university students' attitudes and perceptions toward using mobile applications for English language learning. Conducted at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta with 43 master's students, the research employed a survey to assess various aspects of mobile app usage. Results indicate a generally positive view, with high engagement in listening and multimedia activities, underscoring the effectiveness of mobile apps in these areas. However, there are concerns about content accuracy and the need for improved support for writing skills. Students found mobile apps convenient and enjoyable, suggesting their significant potential to enhance language education. Recommendations include integrating mobile apps more systematically into curricula, focusing on features that support writing skills, and addressing concerns about information reliability. Future research should explore long-term impacts, effective integration strategies, and the role of specific app features in language development

Abstract

Women have constructs formed by society. The construct can not only be seen in the real world, but it can also be seen through stories in the media where these stories are also caused by public beliefs. The objective of this research is to discover the representation of women found in the movie of Enola Holmes which is seen from the perspective of male and female characters. In addition, this research also aims to look at the subject-object position and reader position by applying Mills’ Feminist Stylistics theory as the analytical framework. This research used a qualitative method as a research design. This research also used the movie of Enola Holmes to find the representation of women. The data used are words, sentences, and discourses spoken by male and female characters that describe a woman. The data obtained are examined using the theory proposed by Sara Mills. This research found that women are still often regarded as lower than men.
