Abstract

To maximally acquire the target language, second language learners are demanded to master the knowledge of pragmatics on the grounds that it facilitates them to capture a comprehensive understanding of the classroom communication patterns which deal with how language is used according to its context. Added to this, knowledge of pragmatics can be used to minimize miscommunication and misunderstanding of the speech acts used in classroom communication practices. More specifically, second language learners have to acquire the issues of pragmatics which include types of illocutionary acts, illocutionary force, and implicatures. Such aspects of pragmatics are commonly found in classroom communication practices which are done by English teachers of secondary school levels. In reference to these issues, this paper attempts to review the types of illocutionary acts, illocutionary forces and conversational implicatures applied by English teachers of secondary school levels. Such an understanding of those three aspects of pragmatics is believed to facilitate students of secondary schools as the second language learners to easily make sense of the utterances as performed by English teachers in a series of English language teaching and learning practices.

Abstract

Occupational musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) often result from prolonged non-ergonomic postures, especially in educational and industrial bench work activities. This study presents an approach to classify ergonomic and non-ergonomic working postures using surface electromyography (sEMG) signals and machine learning. sEMG data were recorded from four upper limb muscles during simulated bench work conditions. Time-domain and frequency-domain features were extracted from segmented EMG signals using sliding windows. Dimensionality reduction was performed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and classification was carried out using logistic regression. The proposed system achieved an overall classification accuracy of 75% in distinguishing ergonomic and non-ergonomic postures. Visualization using PCA and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) showed clear class separation, validating the discriminatory power of the extracted features. While the small sample size and class imbalance were identified as limitations, the study demonstrates that a simple and interpretable model like Logistic Regression, when combined with proper feature engineering, can yield promising results. This work contributes to the development of low-cost, efficient, and interpretable ergonomic assessment tools. It is particularly relevant for vocational and educational environments where real-time posture monitoring and early prevention of MSDs are essential. Future research should focus on expanding the dataset, exploring deep learning methods, and implementing real-time wearable systems.

Abstract

The development and formulation of English language learning materials, meticulously tailored to encompass the cognitive processes of both the left and right brain hemispheres, emerge as a matter of profound import in the realm of promoting efficacious language acquisition among Junior High School students. In light of this imperative, the present research endeavors to construct and design English instructional materials with a distinct focus on seventh-grade learners within the Junior High School milieu, with an overarching objective of optimizing left- and right-brain accommodation. The research methodology employed is Research and Development (R&D). The procedural trajectory encompassed writing a syllabus, designing the materials, doing material evaluation, and revising the material draft. In the context of data collection, a twofold approach was undertaken, featuring targeted questionnaires designed to elicit data pertaining to both the students' instructional requisites and their perceived learning needs. This validation is derived from a tripartite evaluation, encompassing data analysis, expert assessment, and student feedback. Expert judgment, indicative of the materials' categorization as falling within the "good" bracket, substantiates the meticulous development process, with an average score of 3.8. Likewise, the evaluation, reflected in an average score of 3.13, corroborates the materials' efficacy in cultivating a conducive learning environment. In summation, this study epitomizes a deliberate and comprehensive endeavor to forge English instructional materials that transcend conventional paradigms by cognizantly accommodating the cognitive dimensions of learners' brains. The harmonious fusion of pedagogical design and cognitive insight, as evinced in the development and evaluation process, advocates for a dynamic shift in instructional material construction to better align with the multifaceted cognitive attributes of students in Junior High Schools.

Abstract

This paper began with concerns about the lacks of sharp rhetorical styles in writing, the methods of citing references, and the formulations of theories and arguments within the conceptual framework in thesis reports written by students of the English Language Education Department. The study was carried out to explain the rhetorical styles of students’ theoretical framework in their thesis report, to reveal weaknesses or the lack of strong arguments in conveying ideas in a straightforward and structured manner, and to suggest actions to prevent the problem form reoccurring in the future. The data were collected from the final project manuscripts written by students of the English Education Study Program, totaling 110 works. The analysis followed the stages of data collection, data display, data reduction and drawing conclusions. The general results of the research showed that the students did not include too many elements of critical thinking in their thesis literature review. In general, they used attribution quite excessively (78%), followed by elements of establishing links between sources (15%), and comparing their own findings or interpretations with other sources 4%. Meanwhile, the elements of application, evaluation, and statement of use had the smallest portion, each 1%. Problems found in the sample were listed based on the comparison between the data and the standard commonly used to regulate the procedure of writing a scientific paper. Recommendations were then formulated which can be used as guidelines for final project writers or any other parties related to writing scientific papers in general; they are training students of the importance of using all rhetorical styles in their citation when preparing a strong conceptual framework.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) within the Kurikulum Merdeka framework in Gowa District, Indonesia, focusing on English teachers' experiences and strategies. Using qualitative methods, including surveys (n=12), focus group discussions (n=7), and in-depth interviews (n=2), the study identifies challenges such as limited vocabulary, uneven proficiency levels, and insufficient resources. Strategies to overcome these challenges include promoting peer communication, leveraging multimedia resources, and fostering parental involvement. Comparisons with curriculum reforms in South Korea, Japan, and Bangladesh provide a global perspective on CLT implementation. The findings highlight the positive impact of CLT on students' communicative competence and suggest that Kurikulum Merdeka's focus on independent learning and project-based initiatives, along with collaborative activities such as English day, clubs, camps, and competitions, can further support CLT. However, effective execution, continuous evaluation, and addressing diverse educational backgrounds and regional disparities are essential for achieving the desired English proficiency outcomes. This study offers valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and researchers to enhance English language teaching in diverse educational settings.
