Abstract

Influenza is an acute contagious respiratory infection that remains a major global health concern due to its high transmissibility and ability to undergo genetic variations through antigenic drift and shift. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the definition, epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic methods, management, complications, and preventive strategies of influenza based on recent scientific evidence. A narrative review method was employed by analyzing publications from 2008 to 2025, sourced from PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, using keywords such as “influenza,” “respiratory infection,” “antiviral therapy,” and “influenza vaccination.” The findings show that influenza affects approximately one billion people globally each year, with 3–5 million severe cases and 290,000–650,000 respiratory deaths, particularly among vulnerable groups including children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic diseases. The infection is caused by influenza viruses type A, B, C, and D, with type A being the most associated with epidemics and pandemics. Diagnosis is primarily based on clinical assessment supported by RT-PCR as the gold standard, while neuraminidase inhibitors such as oseltamivir and zanamivir remain the mainstay of therapy when administered early. Annual vaccination remains the most effective preventive measure, complemented by non-pharmacological interventions such as hand hygiene, mask use, and respiratory etiquette. In conclusion, strengthening surveillance systems, improving vaccination coverage, and enhancing early diagnostic capacity are essential strategies to reduce the global burden of influenza and its complications.

Abstract

Hyperthyroidism, a condition of excessive thyroid hormone production, presents significant diagnostic and management challenges worldwide. Its clinical spectrum is broad, influenced by etiology, patient demographics, and regional factors. This study was conducted to provide a detailed description of the clinical characteristics, demographic profile, and management patterns of hyperthyroid patients at Dr. (H.C) Ir. Soekarno Regional General Hospital, a tertiary care center in Bangka Belitung Province. This research utilized a descriptive observational method with a cross-sectional design. Data were retrospectively collected from the medical records of 83 patients diagnosed with hyperthyroidism between January and December 2024. The collected variables included age, gender, clinical manifestations, laboratory findings, and prescribed therapeutic regimens. The analysis revealed a significant female predominance (86.7%) among patients, with the majority falling into the >35 years age group (56.6%), confirming established epidemiological trends. The most prevalent clinical findings were palpitations (90.4%), goiter (85.5%), and unexplained weight loss (78.3%). Graves' disease was identified as the primary etiology in 72.3% of cases. The mainstay of treatment was pharmacotherapy, with Methimazole being the most frequently prescribed antithyroid drug (81.9%), often supplemented with beta-blockers (74.7%) for symptomatic control. This study concludes that the clinical profile of hyperthyroidism at this tertiary hospital aligns with classical presentations, predominantly affecting adult women. The findings underscore the importance of recognizing key symptoms for early diagnosis and affirm that current management practices are consistent with established clinical guidelines.

Abstract

Abstract

Science lessons, especially biology, cannot be studied easily, one of which is material about the human digestive system. This material is complicated because the digestive organs work in the body so an appropriate learning model is needed. This research uses a Quantitative Drill and Practice Model approach based on audiovisuals and anatomical games applications to increase children's understanding in Yogyakarta inclusion-friendly elementary schools. The aim of this research is to increase students' understanding of the human digestive system material. The results show a significant increase in understanding as seen from the post-test results, including children with special needs (ABK) who also saw an increase, but for ABK students with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and Multiple Disability (Down Syndrome and Physically Impaired) they have not been able to adapt to their classmates. so there is still a real need for special assistance/individual education and learning methods that are tailored to their level of needs. Educators are expected to be able to innovate using various media and learning models, such as using anatomy games applications with a drill and practice model.
