Abstract

Nanocellulose-based CNC–ZnO nanocomposites from garlic peel waste were successfully synthesized as environmentally friendly photocatalysts. This study aimed to valorize kitchen waste as a source of cellulose and combine it with ZnO through a one-pot precipitation method using CNC and Zn(NO₃)₂ as ZnO precursors. Structural, morphological, and optical properties were characterized using FTIR, XRD, SEM–EDX, XRF, and UV–Vis DRS. The XRD pattern showed a crystalline cellulose peak at 2θ ≈ 22.22° with a crystallite size of approximately 20.65 nm, while the CNC–ZnO nanocomposites showed crystallite sizes in the range of 23.93–31.12 nm. Peak shifts and broadening suggested interfacial interactions between CNC and ZnO, and the wurtzite ZnO reflections displayed a broad shoulder due to overlap with the cellulose peak and the high dispersion of ZnO within the CNC matrix. SEM–EDX analysis revealed a rod-like bundled agglomerated morphology, with the presence of Zn confirmed by EDX (39.23%) and XRF (~8.36%). The CNC–ZnO0.9 sample exhibited a band gap energy of 2.95 eV. Photocatalytic test against methyl orange (10 ppm) increased with UV irradiation time, achieving net photocatalytic efficiencies of 79.12% and 63% in the first and second cycles after 120 min, respectively. Kinetic analysis indicated that the degradation data were better described by a pseudo-second-order model with a rate constant of 0.0374 min⁻¹, indicating the role of surface interactions and the availability of active sites. These results confirmed the potential of CNC–ZnO nanocomposites derived from garlic peel waste as photocatalysts for organic dye degradation

Abstract

Indonesia is the world’s second largest contributor of plastic waste entering the oceans, where it degrades into microplastics smaller than 1 micron. The use of bioplastics is therefore essential to mitigate environmental pollution. One promising alternative is starch–cellulose blend bioplastic derived from empty fruit bunches (EFB) of oil palm. Indonesia produces about 56.35 million tons of EFB annually, containing approximately 40% cellulose, which makes it a potential raw material for bioplastic production, although commercialization has not yet been realized. Environmentally, converting EFB into bioplastics within the palm oil value chain represents a sustainable waste recycling strategy that transforms solid residues into higher-value products. In this design, soda cooking technology is employed to extract cellulose from EFB, utilizing about 16% of waste from a crude palm oil (CPO) mill with a capacity of 30 tons of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) per hour. The starch–cellulose blend bioplastic pellets are formulated using gelatinized cassava starch as the polymer matrix, glycerol as a plasticizer, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a stabilizer, and cellulose as a filler. The designed production capacity of the EFB-based starch–cellulose bioplastic plant is 16,500 tons per year. This bioplastic industry is expected to contribute positively to achieving eight Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Goals 1, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 17, thereby supporting Indonesia’s commitment to sustainable industrial development and a cleaner environment.

Abstract

Biogas purification is essential to increase methane concentration and reduce impurities such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, which decrease calorific value and cause corrosion in energy systems. This study evaluates the effect of absorbent solution type on biogas purification efficiency and absorption durability using chemical absorption methods. Alkaline solutions including sodium hydroxide (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH), calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)?), and their binary mixtures were employed at a concentration of 20% (w/v). Biogas derived from molasses fermentation was passed through bubble column absorbers and analysed using an Orsat apparatus over 2–10 days of absorption. Results show that all absorbents significantly increased methane concentration while reducing CO? and H?S. The highest methane concentration of 86.75% was achieved using KOH on day four, exceeding the Indonesian biogas quality standard (SNI 8019:2014). Absorbent saturation occurred after approximately six days, indicated by declining purification performance. These findings confirm that chemical absorption using alkaline solutions is effective for biogas upgrading, with KOH demonstrating the best overall performance and durability. Abstract

Bullying is a form of aggressive behavior that is carried out repeatedly and involves power imbalance, which has a negative impact on students' social and emotional development. In the context of Christian education, this behavior fundamentally contradicts the concept of Christian character, which emphasizes the values of love, respect, and empathy as a tangible manifestation of faith in relationships with others. This study aims to address bullying behavior through a behavioristic approach as an effort to shape Christian character in the school environment. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative approach. The results show that the application of behavioristic techniques such as positive reinforcement, controlled punishment, and prosoccial behavior habituation has been proven to significantly reduce the frequency of bullying. In addition, the application of Christian values in reinforcing positive behavior accelerates the process of internalizing Christian character. A behavioristic approach contextualized with Christian principles can overcome bullying in shaping character in the school environment.

Abstract

This study analyses the dynamics of power and organisational politics in Islamic educational institutions, particularly classical and modern Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia, using a literature review approach. Islamic boarding schools, which historically centred on the charismatic authority of the kiai, are now transforming in response to the demands of modernisation, which is driving a shift towards more rational and bureaucratic management. A comparative analysis of ten recent scientific articles reveals significant differences in sources of legitimacy, power structures, decision-making mechanisms, external relations, resource management, and conflict resolution between the two models of Islamic boarding schools. Traditional pesantren rely on the personal authority of the kiai and patron-client relationships, while modern pesantren employ legal-rational structures, managerial expertise, and external connections. These findings indicate an urgent need to develop a grand theory of Islamic education management that can accommodate the broad spectrum between community and bureaucratic models, as well as consider socio-cultural and political influences. This study contributes to the theoretical and practical understanding of pesantren governance, highlighting the importance of integrating Islamic values with organisational efficiency
