Abstract

The implementation of motivational strategies not only promotes a positive attitude towards writing but also encourages more effective development of students’ writing skills. This study explores lecturers’ insights on how they perceive the motivational teaching strategies in their English writing class. This study employs a qualitative approach with two English writing lecturers from Maros Muslim University as participants. Semi-structured interviews and classroom observation were the instruments used to collect the data and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results show that both lecturers implement motivational strategies effectively by utilizing positive reinforcement, active learning strategies, and addressing students’ difficulties. Positive reinforcement significantly improves students’ motivation and writing performance. It was strengthened by the observational data that showed both lecturers constantly praised students whenever they responded positively during learning process. Lecturers emphasize that giving active learning strategies can motivate students to engage actively in writing tasks, which can enhance motivation and writing proficiency. The lecturers also acknowledge that addressing students’ difficulties is essential in reducing their anxiety and fostering confidence in writing. Recognizing and responding to students’ difficulties can reduce anxiety and encourage them to share their thoughts more confidently in writing.

Abstract

This research investigates the psychological aspects influencing student engagement with Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) in English language education. The study contributes to a deeper understanding of the role that students' attitudes, personalities, expectations, and motivations play in shaping their learning experiences. The research employs a narrative inquiry approach coupled with semi-structured focus group interviews. A purposive sampling method based on individual factors such as gender, age, and culture was used to select participants from Universitas Borneo Tarakan. The qualitative analysis identified key themes and patterns from the students' narratives about their MALL experiences. The findings reveal that positive attitudes towards MALL, genuine interest in language learning, and high expectations significantly enhance student motivation and active participation in MALL activities. Furthermore, robust institutional support emerged as crucial for the successful implementation of MALL programs. These insights suggest that by understanding these psychological dimensions and ensuring adequate institutional support, educators can improve students' experiences with MALL. It has implications for fostering enhanced engagement and success in language learning.

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the operant conditioning that occurs to the main character in the novel Breath of Scandal and the impacts of operant conditioning on the character using literary psychological approach. This research approach combines interactive data analysis with descriptive qualitative methodologies, which is the process of processing data by collecting, selecting, and connecting it in a systematic way in order to reach conclusions. The source is from “Breath of Scandal” novel that is written by Sandra Brown. The novel's operant conditioning, which is assisted by behaviorism theory, develops through Jade's major characters' humiliation, harassment, and betrayal by her best friend, childhood friend, lover, and parents as well as through her encouragement, acceptance, and revenge. The result of this study showed twenty-eight extracts of operant conditioning that have been associated with behaviorism theory written in the novel. Fourteen out of twenty-eight were stimulus to Jade as the main character, and fourteen were responses from Jade. The result of the research showed that operant conditioning did happen to Jade as the main character, but it could not be determined like in the live experiments, and the impact of the operant conditioning on Jade is making it hard for her to forgive and to believe in someone throughout the novel's plot.

Abstract

Humans use language as a tool to communicate with each other. Language can create a meaning that someone wants so as to prevent conflict in society. Language is also not only used for communication about everyday life but is also very important in intercultural communication with others, with the aim of spreading existing cultures so that they are preserved. Talking about culture and language certainly includes types of culture, where culture contains aspects that can be found in various literary works, one of which is movies. Movies are a form of literary work that can explore various studies, including cultural aspects. This thesis focuses on the cultural aspects of the activities of the characters in the movie. In analyzing cultural aspects, of course, it cannot be separated from the characters who play an important role in the movie or are usually called the main characters and supporting characters. In this study, the we used the theory of Cortazzi and Jin (1999). To analyze the data, the we used the anthropolinguistic approach and descriptive qualitative methods. The results of the study were obtained from the movie transcript, which was then interpreted and explained in detail. Based on the results of the study, there are three types of culture spoken by the main character. The three types of culture are source culture, target culture, and international culture.

Abstract

This study investigates the challenges EFL teachers face when designing listening assessment materials, with a focus on understanding these obstacles and identifying strategies to address them. The research aims to explore the alignment of assessment practices with student proficiency levels, resource accessibility, and the impact of time constraints on assessment quality. The study involves eight active English teachers from diverse educational institutions as participants. Data were collected using an online questionnaire designed to gather insights into teachers’ perspectives and strategies, guided by the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, Product) evaluation model. This structured framework facilitated a comprehensive analysis of contextual needs, available resources, procedural approaches, and assessment outcomes. The data were analyzed descriptively using Google Forms, with key findings highlighting significant challenges in sourcing appropriate audio materials, ensuring inclusivity and validity, and managing time for creating bespoke assessments. Results revealed that while 50% of teachers successfully aligned assessments with student abilities, 25% faced difficulties in selecting suitable materials due to resource limitations. Teachers frequently relied on self-created or freely available online resources and employed pre-made tests due to time constraints. Despite these efforts, gaps in assessment literacy and resource access persisted. The study underscores the need for professional development programs to enhance language assessment literacy, improved access to diverse, high-quality audio materials, and systemic support to address these challenges. By addressing these issues, this research contributes to more effective listening assessment practices, fostering equitable and comprehensive EFL education.

Abstract

This study delves into information and communication technology (ICT) competency and mobile learning (m-learning) acceptance among Indonesian university students enrolled in English for specific purposes (ESP) programs across various disciplines, such as mathematics, health, management, and counselling guidance. Utilizing survey methodology with closed-ended questions involving a broad sample of non-English major ESP students from these diverse fields revealed over 60% competency in using m-learning platforms. The results underscore the extensive use of digital technology across campus for diverse functions like communication, creation, distribution, storage, and management. These tools have proven crucial for collaboration and social interaction among students. However, pedagogical factors significantly challenge m-learning adoption. This study contributes to the literature by offering insights into ICT competencies' impact on m-learning acceptance among cross-disciplinary ESP learners. The findings carry practical implications for educators, suggesting that understanding ICT competencies can enhance student outcomes and engagement in m-learning platforms. Future research is recommended to incorporate perspectives from students and lecturers on the influence of ICT competencies on m-learning acceptance in cross-disciplinary ESP programs.

This research uses a correlational research design. The study used a personality questionnaire from Airasian and Gay to investigate students' personalities. It also employed a learning style questionnaire by Joy M Reid to investigate students' learning styles. It then confirmed the student achievement scores from English teachers. The population of this research was all students at level XI.7 of SMAN 1 Bantaeng and they were selected randomly with 25 students from one class. After analyzing the student personality using SPSS, it was found that introvert personalities with a visual learning style scored 0.786, introvert personalities with an audio learning style scored 0.914, introvert personalities with a kinesthetic learning style scored 0.874 as well as extrovert personalities with a visual learning style scored 0.944, extrovert personalities with an audio learning score 0.926, extrovert personality with a kinesthetic learning style score of 0.927. Thus, academic success in English is significantly correlated with introverted students with a Visual Auditory Kinesthetic learning style and is significantly correlated with extroverted students whose learning style shows a good correlation.
