Abstract

This study aimed to provide professional development to beginner teachers for modifying science teaching strategies innovatively. The program involved 15 primary teachers with diverse genders, ages, educational backgrounds, and teaching experience. The program was developed through a four-stage training model: reflection, identification, analysis, and modification. The study assessed participants' understanding of innovative science teaching through a pre-test, post-test, journals, worksheets, and lesson plans with data analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. Results showed that most teachers (73.3%) could participate in the training stages optimally, which increased their competence in modifying innovative science teaching strategies. However, some teachers needed help during the training process, which was influenced by factors such as educational background and teaching experience. The study found that a teacher’s educational background and teaching experience positively influence their competence, with better alignment and more experience enhancing pedagogical skills. A training program fostered lifelong learning, motivating teachers to create development plans. Teachers also formed learning communities through social media, enhancing collaboration and professional growth.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an integrated assessment instrument that measures environmental literacy and problem-solving skills based on system thinking in the context of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. Using the Borg and Gall R&D framework, the instrument was constructed in five phases involving preliminary analysis, planning, item development, field testing, and revision. The instrument consisted of five contextual essay questions with fourteen sub-indicators aligned to environmental literacy dimensions, systems-thinking components, and Polya’s problem-solving stages. The subjects were 132 tenth-grade high school students enrolled in Biology classes on the topic of Environmental Change from four different schools in Cirebon. The developed instrument consisted of five contextual essay questions with fourteen sub-questions. Content validity was analyzed using Aiken’s V, construct validity using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), and reliability using Cronbach’s Alpha. The results showed an Aiken’s V value of 0.86 (highly valid), KMO value of 0.60, and significant Bartlett’s Test (p < 0.05). Four main factors were identified, consistent with Polya’s problem-solving stages, with a Cronbach’s Alpha of 0.83. The average student score was 61.4, with 2% in the high category, 35% moderate, and 63% low. These results indicate that the developed instrument is feasible to assess students’ environmental literacy and problem-solving skills in the context of tenth-grade Biology learning on Environmental Change related to SDG 6. The overall low student performance suggests that learners have not yet developed a deep understanding of environmental concepts, system interactions, and structured problem-solving processes. This also reveals an instructional gap, particularly in providing opportunities for inquiry-based learning, systems thinking, and contextualized environmental analysis. Therefore, the instrument is valuable for teachers as it not only diagnoses specific weaknesses in students’ competencies but also guides the refinement of instructional strategies to better integrate SDG 6 issues into biology learning.

Abstract

Electrolysis is a fundamental concept in electrochemistry, yet its real-world applications are often overlooked in classroom settings. This study aims to design and develop a rainwater electrolysis practicum tool that contextualizes electrochemical concepts, enabling students to directly observe chemical processes related to environmental issues such as acid rain. An experimental method was conducted by varying the applied potential difference (4, 6, 8, and 10 V) and measuring pH changes in rainwater. The apparatus was designed and fabricated by the authors, adapting established electrolysis principles into a hands-on practicum tool. The results indicate that increasing potential difference influences localized pH shifts, where the cathode environment becomes more basic while the anode becomes more acidic, visualizing ion distribution during electrolysis. Student responses, collected through questionnaires, revealed high levels of motivation, ease of use, attractiveness, and perceived usefulness of the practicum product. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the practicum in enhancing students' engagement and understanding of electrochemistry concepts. In conclusion, the rainwater electrolysis practicum developed in this study bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical applications, fostering a contextualized learning experience that aligns with the objectives of science education while also embedding environmental relevance.

Abstract

This research seeks to present a comprehensive depiction of scholarly developments in the field of teaching and learning within Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) by examining patterns of scientific productivity, dominant publication outlets, as well as the most active authors, countries, and their collaborative networks. Data were obtained through the extraction of relevant articles from the Scopus online database in November 2023. A total of 490 Scopus-indexed publications produced over a twenty-year period (2003–2023) were identified and selected for bibliometric analysis. The retrieved records were exported in BibTeX format and subsequently transformed into a data frame using functions available in the bibliometrix package. The results reveal a steady and notable growth in research output related to teaching and learning on ESD throughout the past two decades. In addition, the analysis highlights a shift in research emphasis: earlier studies tended to focus more broadly on ESD discourse, whereas more recent publications demonstrate increasing attention toward empirical investigations specifically addressing teaching and learning practices within the ESD context. Unlike existing ESD bibliometric studies that emphasize general thematic development, this review uniquely foregrounds the evolution of teaching and learning research within ESD. The fundamental finding reveals a clear longitudinal shift from conceptual discourse toward empirically driven pedagogical research, indicating the maturation of ESD as an evidence-based educational field.

Abstract

This study investigates upper elementary students' sustainable consumption understanding and problem-solving skills concerning single-use plastic food packaging waste. Employing a quantitative survey design, the research involved 53 fifth- and sixth-grade students from public and private primary schools in Sumedang, Indonesia. Data were collected through a 34-item Likert-scale questionnaire assessing sustainable consumption across knowledge, behavioral, and socio-emotional indicators, and 10 contextual open-ended items evaluating problem-solving abilities using the IDEAL framework. Descriptive and inferential statistics, including Pearson correlations, independent t-tests, and one-way ANOVA, were employed for analysis. Results reveal robust sustainable consumption understanding in knowledge (78%) and socio-emotional domains (80%), yet behavioral indicators trail at 70%, evidencing a pronounced attitude-behavior gap. Female students, sixth graders, and private school attendees consistently outperformed their counterparts across all indicators. Conversely, problem-solving proficiency remains critically deficient, with 60.37% of students categorized as weak (mean scores 1.90–2.02 on a 4-point scale), particularly in problem identification and solution planning stages. These findings demonstrate that while students possess adequate environmental awareness, they lack the analytical competencies necessary to translate knowledge into sustainable practices. The study underscores the imperative for experiential, project-based pedagogies integrating problem-solving skill development to bridge knowledge-behavior gaps and cultivate responsible consumption behaviors aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 12.

Abstract

Understanding students’ mental models is essential to identify conceptual and representational challenges in learning intricate biological processes such as photosynthesis. This study explores senior high school students’ mental models of photosynthesis using a five-tier open-ended diagnostic test that integrates conceptual and visual understanding. A qualitative case study was conducted with 27 students in Bandung, Indonesia. The results revealed that only 22.8% of students demonstrated scientific understanding of the light reaction, and just 16.0% did so for the dark reaction. The majority of students exhibited initial or synthetic models, indicating fragmented knowledge, misconceptions, and difficulties in depicting key photosynthesis processes. Visualization results further highlighted students’ limited ability to construct accurate scientific representations, especially for the dark reaction. These findings suggest a need for model-based teaching strategies, multimodal representations, and formative assessments to enhance students’ conceptual and visual understanding of photosynthesis.

Abstract

The integration of technology into teaching and learning processes is highly relevant in today’s educational landscape, as technology has become essential for facilitating student learning. However, in practice, technology has not been fully optimized to develop students' critical thinking skills. The TPACK framework, which guides teachers in integrating technology into the learning process, must be continuously refined through relevant strategies. This study aims to describe how elementary school teachers' TPACK can be improved through collaborative, practical, and reflective approaches. A mixed methods design with an embedded experimental approach was employed. The study involved 84 teacher participants, randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. Data were collected using a 21st-century TPACK questionnaire and interviews. The findings indicate that collaborative, practical, and reflective approaches significantly enhanced elementary school teachers' TPACK. Statistical tests revealed a significant difference between the experimental and control groups, with the experimental group achieving higher average TPACK scores. Training that incorporates teacher collaboration, real-world classroom practices, and self-reflection effectively enhanced Technological Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK), contributing to the overall improvement of TPACK.
