Abstract

Immersive Virtual Learning is a learning that is considered meaningful for students to learn the complex concept of climate change because of the many interactions of the systems involved in it, and is considered a concept that is quite challenging for students. It is known that there are still many students who have limited knowledge about climate change so that learning methods are needed that can help them understand the concept of climate change well. This study aims to see how students' understanding after learning using the Immersive Virtual Learning method, and compared with conventional learning methods. Using the Pre-Post Experiment Control Group Design involving 59 students who were divided into treatment and control classes, resulted in data showing that students' understanding in the two classes experienced a significant difference, but very small improvement, even though the treatment class experienced a better improvement. than the control class. Based on this, it can be concluded that students' understanding has increased slightly after learning to use the Immersive Virtual Learning method. Keywords: immersive virtual learning, understanding, climate change. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v23i2.pp642-650

Abstract

This study aims to review the ethnoscience studies in science education in Indonesia thematically. From 2010 to 2020, the databases contained 71 relevant articles of ethnoscience studies. These studies belonged to the content analysis theme parameters of method/design, sample, data collection, data analysis, topic, result, recommendation, and location. The results indicated that most of the ethnoscience studies explored the effect of integrating ethnoscience with the lessons to investigate students’ achievement and attitudes towards science. Correspondingly, the investigated studies mostly used Research and Development (R & D) and experimental research design. The preferred data collecting techniques were tests (multiple-choice/description), questionnaires, and observation. Moreover, seventh and eighth graders of junior high school commonly employed the argumentation activities in physics, chemistry, biology, and basic concept of science topics. This study suggests the teachers employ different methods (e.g., ethnoscience) to improve concept understanding, problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, and motivation in learning science from the primary school level. Furthermore, resources from cultural activities in Indonesia are beneficial for integrating ethnoscience in learning.

Abstract

Teachers’ readiness to integrate Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) plays a pivotal role in preparing students to understand and practice sustainable living. This study examined the readiness of 232 in-service biology teachers in South Sumatra, comprising 142 novice teachers (with ≤10 years of experience) and 90 experienced teachers (with>10 years of experience). A descriptive-comparative quantitative design was employed, using two structured questionnaires to measure teachers’ perspectives on ESD and their Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK). Findings revealed that teachers generally showed a strong commitment to ESD but only a moderate conceptual understanding. Within TPACK, attitudes were rated the highest, whereas technological and inquiry-based competencies were rated the lowest. Novice teachers scored higher than experienced teachers, while participation in environmental education training or prior teaching experience in related topics improved readiness. This study highlights the importance of continuous professional development in enhancing teachers’ technological and inquiry-oriented capacities. Strengthening these dimensions is crucial for effectively embedding ESD into biology teaching and science education more broadly. By addressing these gaps, the integration of ESD can move beyond awareness toward transformative learning that equips students with the skills and dispositions needed for sustainable futures.

Abstract

This study analyzes the science teaching materials integrated with ESD and Ethnoscience based on teachers' teaching experiences and educational qualifications. This case study research involved six junior high school science teachers in Cimahi City who participated voluntarily in a teacher training program. Data collection techniques in this research used observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The data analysis employed a descriptive narrative approach by reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions.  Then, triangulation is also performed for data validation. Based on the research findings, teaching materials prepared by novice teachers with less than five years of teaching experience tend to be textbook-oriented, and the language used still needs to be suitable for the cognitive level of junior high school students. However, the materials they prepared have an attractive appearance. Meanwhile, experienced teachers elaborate and provide contextual examples, using easily understandable language and incorporating tables or graphs to enhance students' literacy and numeracy skills. Out of the six teachers, four have a Biology/ Biology Education background, and two have qualifications in Physics Education at the bachelor's level. Teachers choose teaching materials that align with their educational background because they feel more confident in delivering scientific concepts. Through this research, it is described that teachers still tend to develop teaching materials based on the 2013 curriculum, whereas, at present, the preparation of teaching materials should be aligned with the principles of the Merdeka curriculum.

Abstract

In the context of classroom-based learning, the majority of students tend to acquire cognitive knowledge. It is essential for students to not only acquire cognitive knowledge but also develop awareness of sustainability as a result of teaching and learning activities. The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to measure sustainability awareness among high school students. Developing an instrument of sustainability awareness for students is important to measure and encourage their understanding and actions in preserving the environment sustainably. The instrument developed consists of three subdimensions: economy, society, and environment. This instrument assesses awareness of the concept of sustainable development and practices, attitudes, and moral values for sustainability at the individual level. This study used the Rasch modeling analysis technique. The instrument is a closed questionnaire containing 21 items using a 4-point Likert scale. The results of the Rasch modeling showed that the overall Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient was in the "good" category, while the item reliability coefficient was in the "very good" category. However, the student reliability coefficient was in the "weak" category. The results of the instrument validity test showed four invalid items. These items showed ZSTD and Pt Mean Corr values that did not meet the established criteria. However, the existence of invalid instrument items and weak student reliability coefficients did not affect the overall quality of the instrument. Therefore, it can be concluded that the developed instrument is considered appropriate for measuring the sustainability awareness profile of students.
