Abstract

The "HOPE" learning model is used to determine differences in understanding the nature of science (NOS) in tentative aspects of elementary school (SD) students before and after learning. The method used is pre-experimental with one group pre-test and post-test design. The respondents of this study consisted of 32 public elementary school students. Questionnaires for understanding the nature of science and interview sheets are the instruments of this study. The data obtained were analyzed by Wilcoxon test using SPSS ver. 23 at α (0.05). The results of the study showed that there were differences in understanding the nature of the tentative aspects of science in students before and after learning using the "HOPE" model. It can be concluded that the "HOPE" learning model has an effect on increasing understanding of the nature of science in the tentative aspect.

Abstract

Many researchers or teachers need more and more complete information about the evaluation of the implementation of learning or the ability measurement tools used to find out how much learning outcomes are shown by their students. In this article, it is shown how to analyze questions based on the level of difficulty and suitability of test item items; especially on HOTS (Higher-Order Thinking Skill) based test questions which were developed based on a cognitive hierarchy adopted from Bloom's taxonomy (C4, C5, C6). The analysis process was carried out based on Sumintono's (2015) explanation of the combination of standard deviation (SD) values and logit average values (Mean). Then perform the criteria for the outfit mean square (MNSQ) value, the Z-standard outfit value (ZSTD) and the point measure correlation value (Pt. Measure Corr) (Boone et al., 2014). The analysis technique was carried out through Rasch modeling assisted by the Winsteps 3.75 application. As for the grouping of difficulty levels according to Sumintono (2015), namely 1) difficult question category (logit value is greater + 1SD); 2) difficult question category (value 0.0 logit +1 SD); 3) easy question category (value 0.0 logit -1 SD); and 4) the category of questions is very easy (value less than -SD), as well as for the criteria used to measure the suitability of item items using, 1) the value of 0.5 MNSQ 1.5; 2) value -2.0 ZSTD +2.0; and 3) the value of 0.4 PT-Measure Corr 0.85, (Boone et al., 2014). The results of the analysis show that there are variations in the level of difficulty and suitability of HOTS-based test items. The item analyzed had an acceptable level of suitability and was feasible to maintain because all items met these three criteria. Thus, the collection of HOTS-based test questions is in a good category because it can identify students' various abilities in higher-order thinking with varying levels of difficulty.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze teachers' strategies in integrating technology into the teaching of the water cycle material to enhance students' understanding and support 21st-century competencies, such as critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research involved four teachers teaching 5th-grade elementary school students in Sumedang Regency. The teachers had previously received TPACK training using a collaborative, practical, and reflective approach. Data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews with teachers, and analysis of instructional documents. The findings reveal that teachers utilized various technological media, such as animated videos, digital simulations, and interactive PowerPoint presentations, to explain the water cycle concepts in a more engaging and comprehensible manner. Additionally, online learning platforms were employed to facilitate group discussions and student collaboration. These strategies not only improved students' understanding of the water cycle but also fostered 21st-century skills, such as collaboration, problem-solving, and creativity. However, challenges such as limited access to technology and students' digital literacy need to be addressed. This study recommends the principles of collaboration, practice, and reflection in conducting intensive training for teachers to enhance their ability to effectively utilize technology in the learning process.

Abstract

Obesity is a global health problem that requires education-based solutions. This study aims to provide students with critical habits in choosing food through biology learning based on the FatSecret application on digestive system material. The research method used a pre-experimental approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design, involving 29 grade XI students. The learning design was developed based on the ADDIE instructional design model. The research instrument was a questionnaire of students' awareness of healthy eating patterns, which is based on eight points of recommendations from the Ministry of Health, as well as a questionnaire of students' responses to learning. The results showed that the majority of students experienced positive changes in healthy eating habits after learning, with 50.6% of students showing an increase in critical awareness. The FatSecret app proved effective in helping students record and analyze daily food consumption data. A total of 62% of students stated that the learning helped them plan a healthy diet, while 75.9% felt more aware of their food consumption. However, there were challenges such as students' difficulty in developing realistic action steps and limited understanding of nutrition. This activity confirms that technology integration in biology learning can foster students' critical habits in choosing food, with recommendations for improvement in action planning assistance and strengthening understanding of nutrition concepts.

Abstract

This study aims to review the ethnoscience studies in science education in Indonesia thematically. From 2010 to 2020, the databases contained 71 relevant articles of ethnoscience studies. These studies belonged to the content analysis theme parameters of method/design, sample, data collection, data analysis, topic, result, recommendation, and location. The results indicated that most of the ethnoscience studies explored the effect of integrating ethnoscience with the lessons to investigate students’ achievement and attitudes towards science. Correspondingly, the investigated studies mostly used Research and Development (R & D) and experimental research design. The preferred data collecting techniques were tests (multiple-choice/description), questionnaires, and observation. Moreover, seventh and eighth graders of junior high school commonly employed the argumentation activities in physics, chemistry, biology, and basic concept of science topics. This study suggests the teachers employ different methods (e.g., ethnoscience) to improve concept understanding, problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, and motivation in learning science from the primary school level. Furthermore, resources from cultural activities in Indonesia are beneficial for integrating ethnoscience in learning.

Abstract

Web-based inquiry is an intermediary medium that supports broad sharing of data and ideas, in visualizing, analyzing, and offering knowledge integration. This study aims to analyze the scope of scientific research related to web-based inquiry using bibliometric studies starting from the last 10 years. Database information is obtained from Scopus indexed papers, via the Publish or Perish application. Based on the search and selection results, 65 articles were obtained which were then reviewed with Zotero and processed with the VOS viewer. The analysis used is based on the title area, according to web-based inquiry in supporting science education research. Overall, this study provides information regarding research opportunities in science learning with web-based inquiry, especially during this pandemic. This research also illustrates the publication opportunities in various countries that have a high interest in the topic of inquiry. The mapping of the bibliometric results also supports the scientific explanation between the theory and the evidence of probability. Therefore, the literature is expected to be a reference for further science research.

Abstract

This study aims to identify science learning activities for junior high school students. The research design is descriptive and quantitative. The sample in this study was 38 students, and the questions tested consisted of 28 items analyzed by Rasch analysis. Question items are correct if students can answer questions according to their guided inquiry abilities. The results showed that almost all samples could not participate in science learning using guided inquiry. Of the 28 questions tested on students, only three had a score above 50%, and the rest were almost, on average, below 50%. It can be concluded that students have yet to realize that guided inquiry is the essence of science learning, which helps them conduct and develop science learning in the classroom. This study recommends the application of guided inquiry to students to be able to harmonize thinking in science learning in junior high school.
