Abstract

Teachers of Islamic education in Indonesia have some problems. On the one hand, they are required to meet the standards of qualification, competencies, and certification. On the other hand, they have over-working hour due to the imbalance between the number of the teachers and the students. This fact will undoubtedly affect their work quality. The work quality of the teachers can be measured by five kinds of competences: pedagogic, personality, social, professional, and leadership. This research is aimed to measure the five competences of the teachers of Islamic Education in Senior High Schools and Senior Vocational Schools (both SMA and SMK) in Central Java, and it is also to examine the hypothesis that there is no significant difference in teachers’ competences in terms of their status: civil servants (PNS) or not (non-PNS), and certified or not. By using quantitative approach, the research has two important findings. The first, the competency of the Islamic teachers in Central Java is on the medium level which have a score at 2.95 on a scale of 4.00. The pedagogic competence occupies the highest level with 3.25, in contrast the social competence is on the lowest one with 2.9. The second, there is no significant difference in competences between the teachers who are civil servants and those who are not. On the contrary, there is a significant difference in competences between the teachers who are certified and who are not certified yet.

Abstract

This paper examines the chronicle of terrorism in Indonesia and the relationshipbetween terrorism and Islamic militancy in this nation. This research focusedon bombing cases from 2001 to 2012 Data was gathered through documentaryresearch including primary and secondary resources. This research shows thatafter the fall of the Suharto regime in 1998, there were bomb attacks on varioustargets and militant extremists were able to return to Indonesia after long periodof exile abroad. They started again their activities including disseminating theirradical ideology, building networks and recruiting new members in Indonesia, aswell as preparing for militant actions. The perpetrators of these terror attacks weremostly associated with the Islamic radical groups like Jemaah Islamiah and MajlisMujahidin Indonesia. These two militant groups had a close relationship with DarulIslam, an organization founded during the colonial era that aimed to establish anIslamic state and to apply Syariah as a state law. In addition, both groups became apolitical window for al-Qaeda in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article concerns on the notion of responsibility to protect (R2P) in Syrian war and what can be expected from the Muslim community. This theme is important to be discussed for the reasons that crisis in Syria has been occurred for almost nine years since it began in March 2011 and it has no end sign in the immediate time. In addition, it caused hundred thousand civilians dead, million people become displaced persons. In addition, the use of chemical weapons in the Syrian war was against the international laws. This paper was written based on the data that was collected using documentary study. Findings of this research reveals that the Syrian civil war had involved various parties including the government, insurgent groups, international fighters, and several countries like the US, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Russia, some European countries, and other states. This made the situation very complex. The Muslim communities through international organization such as Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) should actively participate in implementing the R2P which include protecting people, promoting human rights issues, and preventing further mass killing as well as military protection.
