Abstract

This research was conducted from February to March 2023 in Setan island, West Sumatra. This study aimed to determine the sediment accumulation rate and coral cover, as well as the correlation between sediment accumulation rate and coral cover. The survey method was used in this research. The sediment accumulation rate was measured using a sediment trap. At the same time, the coral cover was observed using the underwater photo transect (UPT) method with a transect length of 50 m. The total suspended solid was analyzed using the Gravimetric method. Observations were made at four sampling points at depths of 3 and 6 m. The sediment accumulation rate at a depth of 3 m ranged from 0.946315 to 1.534992 mg/cm²/day, while at a depth of 6 meters, it ranged from 1.357756 to 1.607786 mg/cm²/day. The percentage of live coral cover at a depth of 3 meters ranged from 3.40% to 31.36%, and at a depth of 6 m, it ranged from 0.33% to 30.50%. The total suspended solids values ranged from 23 to 96 mg/L. Regression analysis showed that the sediment accumulation rate negatively influenced the percentage of live coral cover.

Abstract

This study analyzes live coral cover, megabenthos abundance, and the relationship between coral reef condition and megabenthos abundance in Pasumpahan Island waters. The survey method was used to collect primary and secondary data. The results showed that the average percentage of live coral reef cover in Pasumpahan Island, West Sumatra, was 33.31%. The abundance of megabenthos obtained was 10,000 ind/ha. Regression results showed a strong positive correlation between coral reef cover and megabenthos abundance, with an R2 value of 0.5396, meaning that the percentage of live coral affects megabenthos by 53.96%.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat tentang pembinaan masyarakat dalam mitigasi abrasi pantai berbasiskan ekosistem mangrove di Kelurahan Purnama Kota Dumai dilakukan pada bulan Juni s/d Agustus 2024 di Kelurahan Purnama Kecamatan Dumai Barat Kota Dumai. Tujuan pengabdian kepada masyarakat adalah untuk meningkatkan kapasitas masyarakat dalam mitigasi abrasi pantai berbasiskan ekosistem mangrove melalui pembibitan dan penanaman mangrove di Kelurahan Purnama Kota Dumai, khususnya anggota kelompok konservasi Mastalimadu. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini adalah ceramah, tanya jawab, diskusi tentang pentingnya partisipasi masyarakat, fungsi hutan mangrove, khususnya fungsi fisik sebagai pelindung pantai dari abrasi dan cara pembibitan, penanaman bibit mangrove serta penanaman langsung. Untuk mengetahui pemahaman peserta terhadap materi yang disampaikan dilakukan evaluasi dengan meminta peserta mengisi kuisioner sebelum dan setelah kegiatan dilakukan. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis secara deskriptif. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa peserta sebelum adanya kegiatan pengabdian 100% sudah mengetahui apa itu mangrove. Namun bagaimana mangrove membantu melindungi pantai dari abrasi melalui perakarannya yang kokoh 69% sebelum kegiatan dan meningkat menjadi 92% setelah kegiatan. Sebelum kegiatan pengetahuan peserta terkait bagaimana mangrove membantu mengurangi risiko dari gelombang laut 69% meningkat setelah kegiatan pengabdian menjadi 84%. Demikian juga halnya pertanyaan terkait bagaimana masyarakat dapat membantu pelestarian mangrove, sebanyak 69% sebelum kegiatan mengetahui melalui kegiatan program penanaman mangrove dan mengedukasi masyarakat, meningkat menjadi 100% setelah kegiatan pengabdian. Pemahaman masyarakat tentang dampak kerusakan hutan mangrove terhadap risiko abrasi pantai, meningkat dari 46% sebelum kegiatan menjadi 76% setelah kegiatan.

Abstract

This study aims to determinate the fishing ground, based on chlorophyll-a distribution in Sibolga marine waters every month throughout 2019 using Aqua Modis Satellite. The method used in was survey method and room analysis method to know directly of fishing ground determined by fisherman and to analysed satellite aqua modis imagery. The water quality measurements were carried out to describe of general conditions research area. The parmeters measured include water temperature, water transparency, salinity, ph, depth and current. Sibolga sea surface temperature ranges from 26-300C, water transparency ranges from 170-210 cm. water salinity ranges between 26-29 ppt, the degree of acidity (ph) ranges from 6,8-8. The depth ranges from 15-22 m,  and current velocity 0.21-0.40 m/s. Based on the results it is known that the chlorophyll-a concentration a ranges from 0.001 to 5,000 mg/m3. Highest chlorophyll-a concentration occurs in October with a range of 3,500 to 5,000 mg/m3, while the lowest chlorophyll-a concentration occurred in February with a range 0,001 to 0,500 mg/m3. Based on the chlorophyll-a average troughout the year the potential for fishing ground is in Sorkam and Kolang water

Abstract

Mapping sea surface temperature and coral reef distribution is vital for understanding the marine environment's dynamics and developing effective conservation strategies. The ideal temperature for coral reefs is between 27-29ºC. This research aims to describe and analyze the relationship between sea surface temperature and chlorophyll-α to the potential zone of coral reefs in Padang City, West Sumatra. The data used in this research is MODIS Aqua level 3 imagery data with 4 km resolution. The imagery processing stages include imagery data processing using SeaDAS software, namely the cropping and reprojection process, and ArcGIS software, namely the interpolation and classification process and map layouting. The results showed that the classification of the distribution of sea surface temperature in Padang City ranged from 26-29ºC, and the average concentration of chlorophyll-α distribution was 1.41 mg/m3. Based on these results, it can be concluded that Padang city waters have an ideal sea surface temperature for coral reefs and are supported by a reasonably high chlorophyll-α concentration.

Abstract

This research was carried out in July 2023 in Muara Sungai Dumai, Dumai City, Riau Province. This study aims to conduct depth mapping analysis using echosounders based on reference corrections to tides. Tidal analysis is performed to determine reference values such as MSL (Mean Sea level) and tidal characteristics. The methods used are survey methods and quantitative analysis. The results showed that the waters of the Dumai River Estuary were mixed tide prevailing semi-diurnal with a formzahl value of 0.29. There is tidal asymmetry with the time to the high tide faster than the time to low tide. The depth ranges from 0.28 to 7.34 m, increasing to 40 m in the Rapat Strait. The weak current and the difference in HHWL values of 3.55 m and MSL 0.14 m affect water level rise due to bathymetric changes at high tide.

Abstract

Marine ecotourism is a type of tourism that involves activities related to marine activities carried out under or above the sea surface. Marine ecotourism generally covers three areas: the sea surface, under the sea, and on the coast. Marine ecotourism activities, especially beach tourism, are highly dependent on the condition of the oceanographic parameters of the region for the safety and comfort of tourists. This research was conducted in Arta Beach, Padang Pariaman Regency, West Sumatra Province, to determine the suitability of marine ecotourism at Arta Beach based on the parameters of physical environmental conditions. This study used a survey method: observation and data collection at the research location. Data analysis is used for the Tourism Suitability Index (IKW) method for physical environmental parameters and the STORET method for water quality parameters. The results of this study indicate that the tourism suitability index based on the physical condition of the environment carried out at Arta Beach at station 1 received a value of 2.49, including the suitable category, at station 2 received a value of 2.5, including the suitable category and station 3 received a value of 2.49 including the suitable category. The overall average value of IKW on Arta Beach is 2.49, included in the suitable category. This value means this beach can be used for beach ecotourism. Water quality parameters are analyzed using the storey method. The data obtained from the pH, DO salinity, and temperature parameters meet the quality requirements (good condition) and are suitable for marine tourism activities

Abstract

Sironjong Gadang Island is one of the islands in the Mandeh Tourism area in Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra, Indonesia. One of the ecosystems affected by tourism activities is coral reefs. Monitoring the coral reefs' condition and the abundance of coral fish in the Chaetdontidae family is carried out to find out this. This research uses survey research methods. The temperature measurement results obtained an average of 30.2oC, current speed measurements received an average of 0.12 m/s, salinity measurements obtained an average of 30 ppt, and brightness measurements show that the brightness of these waters is 9 m. Tide measurements in the waters of Sironjong Gadang Island, carried out on March 7–8, 2023, are double daily tides (semi diurnal tide). Then, the results from the coral reef cover of Sironjong Gadang Island waters obtained a percentage ranging from 2.34 - 12.83%, with an average rate of live coral reef cover of 5.96%, which is included in the poor category. Furthermore, the results at each research station in the waters of Sironjong Gadang Island showed that 54 coralfish individuals were found, with the number of coralfish at each depth ranging from 4 - 10 individuals. The most common types of coral fish are species. Acuminate had 18 individuals; the fewest types of coral fish found were Chaetodon trifasciatus and C. tristichous, each numbering two individuals. There is a solid relationship between live coral reef cover and the abundance of coral fish in the Chaetodontidae family, where live coral reef cover influences the plenty of coral fish by 61.11%, which means that the higher the percentage of live coral cover, the higher the value of coral fish abundance.

Abstract

The Malacca Strait is a water that connects the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea (Pacific Ocean). The Straits of Malacca is the busiest waters because it is filled with activities in and out of ships, fishing activities, ecotourism, and community sea transportation. These activities significantly affect the condition of the waters in the Malacca Strait. Water conditions are greatly affected by oceanographic parameters. One of the most critical parameters is currents. This ocean current is a horizontal movement of water masses influenced by other oceanographic factors. This research was conducted in June - July 2022. This study aimed to determine the pattern of current circulation, direction, and speed of currents as well as sea level during conditions at full moon (highest tide) and new low tide (Lowest tide) each month and every season in the Straits of Malacca. The method used in this research is descriptive quantitative, where numerical data is collected to support the formation of numerical models such as wind, tidal, and bathymetry data. Numerical modeling is a function of the software to determine the pattern of current movement based on the data used. Based on the four seasons (West Season, Transition I, East, and Transition II) at high tide. The highest current speed ranges from 0.02 to 2.07 m/s, while at high tide, the highest current speed ranges from 0.03 to 2.58 m/s.
