Abstract

This study explores how Silat or Silat Melayu, long rooted in cultural tradition and community practice, has gradually evolved into a recognised academic discipline in Malaysia between 2014 and 2024. Led by Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and supported by national organisations such as PASSMAL and PESONA, this transformation reflects a deliberate effort to bring together heritage, education, and science within a structured academic framework. Using a qualitative multi-source approach, the study draws on 47 publications, expert insights, and international case comparisons to understand this development. The findings reveal a clear three-phase progression: early efforts focused on building basic scientific evidence, followed by a phase of training innovation, curriculum integration, and athlete safety, and more recently, a shift towards international collaboration and interdisciplinary research through platforms such as AIRBORNE. Across this journey, five key areas have shaped Silat scholarship: performance science, training and conditioning, curriculum development, injury prevention and recovery, and the preservation of cultural identity. The integration of technologies such as motion analysis has further strengthened coaching practices and athlete welfare, while global networks like IMACSSS and UNESCO-ICM have expanded Silat’s academic reach beyond Malaysia. At the same time, this rapid development brings important challenges, particularly in maintaining cultural authenticity and ensuring balanced global partnerships. Overall, the study shows that Malaysia’s experience offers a practical and forward-looking model for integrating indigenous martial arts into higher education. By carefully balancing tradition with scientific advancement, Silat demonstrates how cultural heritage can remain relevant, respected, and globally engaged in the modern academic landscape.

Abstract

Study purpose. This study aimed to develop a valid, practical, and effective Canva-based interactive learning media for Pencak Silat instruction in fifth-grade Physical Education, Sports, and Health (PJOK) at elementary schools in Padang Gelugur District, Pasaman Regency, in response to the low cognitive learning outcomes observed, where 70% of students failed to meet the Minimum Learning Objective Achievement Criteria (KKTP). Materials and methods. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach guided by the ADDIE model, integrated with a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group pre-test/post-test design. Both classes implemented Problem-Based Learning (PBL) as the shared instructional model, in which the experimental class (SDN 08 Makmur, n=22) used Canva-based media, while the control class (SDN 15 Sontang, n=17) used standard textbooks. Data were analyzed using Jamovi 2.3 through normality tests, homogeneity tests, paired-samples t-tests, N-Gain calculations, independent-samples t-tests, and Cohen's d effect size. Results. Expert validation yielded an overall mean of 90.67% classified as very valid, instrument reliability KR-20 = 0.81, and practicality of 96.00% from the teacher and 91.42% from students, both classified as very practical. The experimental class achieved a mean N-Gain of 0.67 compared to 0.52 in the control class, with a statistically significant difference (t=2.11, df=37, p=0.042) and a pedagogically meaningful medium effect size (Cohen's d=0.68). Conlusions. The Canva-based media was found to be valid, practical, and significantly more effective than standard textbooks within a PBL framework, and constitutes the first scientifically validated Canva-based media developed specifically for Pencak Silat instruction under the Merdeka Curriculum Phase C at the elementary school level.

Abstract

Background: Volleyball is one of the most popular sports and requires effective underhand passing skills to maintain ball control during gameplay. Underhand passing performance is influenced not only by physical factors such as arm muscle strength and leg power but also by psychological factors, particularly concentration. However, the passing ability of junior volleyball players remains relatively low. Aims: This study aimed to analyze the effects of arm muscle strength, leg power, and concentration on underhand passing performance in youth volleyball players. Method: This study employed a quantitative associative design using a path analysis approach. The participants consisted of 30 male volleyball players aged under 15 years selected through total sampling. Arm muscle strength was measured using a pull-up test, leg power using a vertical jump test, concentration using the Concentration Grid Test, and underhand passing performance using a standardized volleyball passing test. Results: The findings showed that arm muscle strength contributed 16% to underhand passing performance, while leg power contributed 5.5%. Concentration also demonstrated a significant contribution to passing ability. Simultaneously, all variables showed a strong influence on underhand passing performance. Conclusion: Physical and psychological factors significantly affect volleyball underhand passing performance. Future studies are recommended to involve broader samples and different competitive levels.

Abstract

Background: Performance analysis is increasingly utilized in elite sports to identify key factors contributing to competitive success. However, limited evidence is available regarding the performance indicators underlying Indonesia’s consecutive gold-medal achievements in international indoor hockey competitions. Aims: This study aimed to identify and compare the performance indicators associated with the Indonesian Men’s National Indoor Hockey Team’s success in the 2023 and 2025 SEA Games finals against Malaysia. Method: A quantitative descriptive design employing match performance analysis was adopted. Data were collected from official match statistics and video recordings of the 2023 and 2025 SEA Games finals. The analyzed variables included shots, shots on target, goals scored, successful passes, ball possession, interceptions, attack blocks, goalkeeper saves, fouls, and technical skill effectiveness. Data were examined using descriptive and comparative statistical analyses. Results: Malaysia demonstrated greater dominance in ball possession, passing, and shooting opportunities in both finals. Nevertheless, Indonesia achieved higher scoring efficiency and stronger defensive performance. Shooting effectiveness increased from 57.69% in 2023 to 68.18% in 2025, while defensive indicators, including interceptions, attack blocks, and goalkeeper saves, consistently contributed to match success. Conclusion: Indonesia’s consecutive SEA Games titles were primarily associated with superior finishing efficiency, defensive stability, and effective utilization of scoring opportunities rather than possession dominance. These findings provide evidence-based insights for performance optimization and strategic development in elite indoor hockey.

Abstract

Background: Newly promoted professional futsal teams often encounter challenges in adapting to the competitive demands of elite leagues, making objective performance evaluation essential for evidence-based coaching. Despite the growing interest in futsal performance analysis, studies examining season-long technical performance indicators in Indonesian professional clubs remain limited. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the technical performance of Rafhely FC throughout the 2024–2025 Indonesian Pro Futsal League season using objective match performance indicators. Method: A quantitative descriptive design was employed using observational data from all 22 league matches. Match statistics, including goals scored, goals conceded, scoring time, dominant foot, shots on target, and match outcomes, were collected through video-based performance analysis and analysed using descriptive statistics. Results: Rafhely FC demonstrated inconsistent performance throughout the season, recording four wins (18.18%), two draws (9.09%), and sixteen losses (72.73%). The team showed greater goal-scoring productivity during the final ten minutes of matches, predominantly using the right foot. However, limited shot conversion efficiency and a higher number of goals conceded than scored reduced overall competitive performance. Conclusion: The findings indicate that Rafhely FC requires improvements in attacking efficiency, defensive organisation, and tactical consistency. Objective technical performance analysis provides valuable evidence for supporting coaching decisions and strategic planning in professional futsal.
