Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the application of the nature of science in high-grade elementary science learning and the obstacles faced by teachers and students during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study used a qualitative descriptive method to provide an overview of the application of the nature of science in elementary science learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The subjects in this study comprised of 41 teachers and 127 high-grade students from various regions in Indonesia. The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire containing 29 statement items for teachers and 21 statement items for students with four answer choices namely always, often, sometimes, and never based on three indicators, namely (1) Science Product, (2) Science Process, (3) Science Attitude. Based on the results of the analysis, it is shown that the indicators of science product and science attitude have the highest percentages chosen by students with answers of always; meanwhile, the science process indicator has the highest percentages chosen by students and teachers for answer of sometimes. Therefore, it can be concluded that elementary science learning in high-grade during the Covid-19 pandemic did not run optimally due to the lack of application of the nature of science, especially the science process.

Abstract

Informal reasoning is the basic reasoning frequently used by most people to solve complex daily life problems. Unlike scientific reasoning, informal reasoning includes cognitive and affective processes that the types of reasoning can be intuitive, emotive and rational. This cross sectional study describes the development of students’ informal reasoning at elementary school, junior high school, and senior high school. Moreover, the study also identifies differences between boys and girls reasoning. Participants are 20 elementary school students, 30 junior high school students, and 30 high school students who attend schools managed by the same foundation. Data were collected using five items test on issues found in everyday life. Students’ responses were grouped into intuitive, emotive, or rational reasoning. The results suggest that students’ informal reasoning tend to develop parallel to the school grade. Related to gender, the study finds that girls tend to use rational reasoning while boys tend to use intuitive reasoning.

Abstract

Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) can be seen as teacher’s skills and abilities in choosing and using technology effectively. However, information about the teacher’s attitudes contribution to technology competencies and science teacher's TPACK is still limited. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the relationship between teacher's technology competencies and their TPACK as well as the effect of teacher’s attitudes as a moderating effect on relation between these two variables. This survey research used total sampling technique which involved 88 science teachers from junior high school of Kota Banda Aceh. The instruments consisted of questionnaires and multiple-choice test which were distributed directly to the teachers. The data analysis was performed by using the Partial Least Square approach. The results showed that technology competencies have a positive relation to TPACK; likewise, the teachers’ attitudes in technology integration were able to strengthen the positive relation between technology competency and science teacher’s TPACK. Therefore, teacher's attitude is an important factor should be concerned in improving teacher's TPACK.

Abstract

Abstract: Teacher’s understanding of science is a prerequisite for teaching science. Due to the lack of science background during their studies, some primary school teachers have limited understanding of science. This study aims at identifying primary school teacher’s understanding of essential science concepts. Data were collected from 293 participants of workshops of professional certification program at university. Teacher’s understanding was measured using a multiple choice test whose answers are in the form of degree of certainty. The study finds that many teachers do not have good understanding of science. Misconceptions are also identified in a number of areas. Student textbooks, myths spread over in the communities, and narrow interpretation of religious teaching are some sources of teacher’s misconceptions. These findings suggest that future professional development program for primary school teachers should be designed in the areas of subject matters and subject matter pedagogy. Keywords: elementary school teachers, misconception, science, understanding

Abstract

The Innovation House program has been developed with the validation criteria of 'Very Good' based on expert judgment. The Innovation House was developed using the ADDIE method (Analysis, Design, Develop, Implement and Evaluate). The vision of the Innovation House is to prepare teacher developers as reflectors, problem solvers, and decision-makers in science learning. The Innovation House aims to improve science teachers' competence in developing curriculum, especially lesson planning (objectives, steps, and assessments). On average, 80% of the lesson plans made by teachers were by the content and constructs of the lesson plans, while at the beginning of the program, the average suitability of new content and constructs was about 56%, with an N-gain score of 0.5 or a moderate increase category. Based on the average assessment of RPP content and constructs, the Rumah Innovation Program effectively improves teacher competence in making Innovative RPP by increasing the aspects of reflection, problem-solving and decision making. The teacher participants' response during the programs was 'imposing' and gave a 'positive response' based on the attitude scale instrument.
